Pharyngoglottal closure reflex: identification and characterization in a feline model.

Earlier studies in humans have shown that pharyngeal stimulation by water at a threshold volume induces a brief vocal cord adduction, i. e., pharyngoglottal closure reflex. The present study was undertaken to 1) develop a suitable animal model for physiological studies of this reflex and 2) delineate its neural pathway and effector organs. Studies were done in cats by concurrent videoendoscopy and manometry followed by electromyographic studies. At a threshold volume (0.3 +/- 0.06 ml), injection of water into the pharynx resulted in a brief closure of the vocal folds, closing the introitus to

Vocal fold scars: current concepts and future directions. Consensus report of the Phonosurgery Committee of the European Laryngological Society.

Scarring of the vocal folds leads to a deterioration of the highly complex micro-structure with consecutively impaired vibratory pattern and glottic insufficiency. The resulting dysphonia is predominantly characterized by a reduced vocal capacity. Despite the considerable progress in understanding of the underlying pathophysiology, the treatment of scarred vocal folds is still an unresolved chapter in laryngology and phonosurgery. Essential for a successful treatment is an individual, multi-dimensional concept that comprises the whole armamentarium of surgical and non-surgical (i.p. voice ther

Small apes adjust rhythms to facilitate song coordination.

Song coordination is a universal characteristic of human music. Many animals also produce well-coordinated duets or choruses that resemble human music. However, the mechanism and evolution of song coordination have only recently been studied in animals. Here, we studied the mechanism of song coordination in three closely related species of wild Nomascus gibbons that live in polygynous groups. In each species, song bouts were dominated by male solo sequences (referred to hereafter as male sequence), and females contributed stereotyped great calls to coordinate with males. Considering the functi

Dairy cattle exploratory and social behaviors: is there an effect of cloning?

While an increasing number of animals are produced by means of somatic cloning, behavioral studies on cloned animals are still rare. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the somatic cloning procedure has an influence on locomotion, exploratory, vocal and social behaviors of heifers. Ten heifers were used in the present study. Five of them were cloned heifers derived from somatic cells of three different Prim'Holstein cows and five others were same-age control heifers produced by artificial insemination. In addition to observations of social behaviors in the stable group, each anima

Oxytocin prevents cocaine-induced high-affect 50-kHz vocalizations in female rats.

Cocaine's reinforcing properties are a key factor underlying the broad prevalence of cocaine use disorder. Few behavioral measures are capable of assessing cocaine-induced euphoria in murine models, limiting effective treatment options. However, positive affective states can be measured in rats by assessing the production of high-frequency, 50-kHz, vocalizations. Oxytocin (OXT) has been shown to attenuate cocaine-mediated behaviors in rodent models; however, the effect of OXT on cocaine-induced euphoria remains unknown. We addressed this by randomly assigning female rats to saline-saline, sali

Blue Light Laser Results in Less Vocal Fold Scarring Compared to KTP Laser in Normal Rat Vocal Folds.

OBJECTIVES: Preliminary investigations suggest that a novel blue light (BL) laser with a wavelength of 445 nm is comparable to the commonly utilized potassium titanyl phosphate (KTP) laser (532 nm) for treatment of various laryngeal pathologies. The objective of the current study is to make a direct histological comparison of the degree of vocal fold scarring after either BL or KTP laser treatment in an animal model. STUDY DESIGN: This was a randomized controlled study using rats. METHODS: Twenty-four Sprague-Dawley rats were randomized to BL or KTP laser treatment. Laser was delivered in no

Communication calls produced by electrical stimulation of four structures in the guinea pig brain.

One of the main central processes affecting the cortical representation of conspecific vocalizations is the collateral output from the extended motor system for call generation. Before starting to study this interaction we sought to compare the characteristics of calls produced by stimulating four different parts of the brain in guinea pigs (Cavia porcellus). By using anaesthetised animals we were able to reposition electrodes without distressing the animals. Trains of 100 electrical pulses were used to stimulate the midbrain periaqueductal grey (PAG), hypothalamus, amygdala, and anterior cing

Social rejection following neonatal inflammation is mediated by olfactory scent cues.

Early-life exposure to inflammation has been associated with several behavioral and cognitive deficits detected in adulthood. However, early behavioral changes have not been well described in rodent models of infection, specifically with respect to social behavior. In the present work we show that lipopolysaccharide (LPS) challenge at 3 and 5days of age reduced overall social contact time in male juvenile rats, primarily mediated by the amount of contact they received from a novel conspecific. Given that there are important sensory, motor, and motivational components that underlie social inter

Intra-Operative Neural Monitoring of Thyroid Surgery in a Porcine Model.

Intraoperative injury to the recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) can cause vocal cord paralysis, which interferes with speech and can potentially interfere with breathing. In recent years, intraoperative neural monitoring (IONM) has been widely adapted as an adjunct technique to localize the RLN, detect RLN injury, and predict vocal cord function during the operations. Many studies have also used animal models to investigate new applications of IONM technology and to develop reliable strategies for preventing intraoperative RLN injury. The aim of this article is to introduce a standard protocol fo

Return of function after hair cell regeneration.

The ultimate goal of hair cell regeneration is to restore functional hearing. Because birds begin perceiving and producing song early in life, they provide a propitious model for studying not only whether regeneration of lost hair cells can return auditory sensitivity but also whether this regenerated periphery can restore complex auditory perception and production. They are the only animal where hair cell regeneration occurs naturally after hair cell loss and where the ability to correctly perceive and produce complex acoustic signals is critical to procreation and survival. The purpose of th

Clinical syndrome associated with zolpidem ingestion in dogs: 33 cases (January 1998-July 2000).

Zolpidem is a nonbenzodiazepine hypnotic of the imidazopyridine class that is used to treat insomnia in humans. Zolpidem binds selectively to the benzodiazepine omega-1 receptor and increases the frequency of chloride channel opening, which results in inhibition of neuronal excitation. A retrospective study was conducted of zolpidem ingestion in dogs that were reported to the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (APCC) between January 1998 and July 2000. Data analysis included amount ingested, clinical effects, and time of onset of signs. Thirty-three reports of zolpidem ingestion in dogs (rangi

Neurobiology of COVID-19-Associated Psychosis/Schizophrenia: Implication of Epidermal Growth Factor Receptor Signaling.

COVID-19 exhibits not only respiratory symptoms but also neurological/psychiatric symptoms rarely including delirium/psychosis. Pathological studies on COVID-19 provide evidence that the cytokine storm, in particular (epidermal growth factor) EGF receptor (EGFR, ErbB1, Her1) activation, plays a central role in the progression of viral replication and lung fibrosis. Of note, SARS-CoV-2 virus (specifically, S1 spike domain) mimics EGF and directly transactivates EGFR, preceding the inflammatory process. In agreement, the anticancer drugs targeting EGFR such as Nimotuzumab and tyrosine kinase inh

Combination of ketamine and xylazine with opioids and acepromazine in rats: Physiological changes and their analgesic effect analysed by ultrasonic vocalization.

In this study, the effect of four anaesthetic protocols that included the combination of xylazine (X) and ketamine (K) with acepromazine (A) and opioids (methadone (Me), morphine (Mo) or tramadol (T)) was evaluated in laboratory rats of both sexes. Ultrasonic vocalization (USV) was used as an indicator of pain during the recovery period. The objective was to evaluate the physiological parameters and the analgesic effect of each protocol to determine which protocol was the safest and fulfil the requirements of a balanced anaesthesia. The better protocols were the XKA protocol for both sexes and

Neurobehavioral Alterations in a Genetic Murine Model of Feingold Syndrome 2.

Feingold syndrome (FS) is an autosomal dominant disorder characterized by microcephaly, short stature, digital anomalies, esophageal/duodenal atresia, facial dysmorphism, and various learning disabilities. Heterozygous deletion of the miR-17-92 cluster is responsible for a subset of FS (Feingold syndrome type 2, FS2), and the developmental abnormalities that characterize this disorder are partially recapitulated in mice that harbor a heterozygous deletion of this cluster (miR-17-92∆/+ mice). Although Feingold patients develop a wide array of learning disabilities, no scientific description of

'Monkey yodels'-frequency jumps in New World monkey vocalizations greatly surpass human vocal register transitions.

We investigated the causal basis of abrupt frequency jumps in a unique database of New World monkey vocalizations. We used a combination of acoustic and electroglottographic recordings in vivo, excised larynx investigations of vocal fold dynamics, and computational modelling. We particularly attended to the contribution of the vocal membranes: thin upward extensions of the vocal folds found in most primates but absent in humans. In three of the six investigated species, we observed two distinct modes of vocal fold vibration. The first, involving vocal fold vibration alone, produced low-frequen

Homology and the evolution of vocal folds in the novel avian voice box.

The origin of novel traits, those that are not direct modifications of a pre-existing ancestral structure, remains a fundamental problem in evolutionary biology. For example, little is known about the evolutionary and developmental origins of the novel avian vocal organ, the syrinx. Located at the tracheobronchial junction, the syrinx is responsible for avian vocalization, but it is unclear whether avian vocal folds are homologous to the laryngeal vocal folds in other tetrapods or convergently evolved. Here, we identify a core developmental program involved in avian vocal fold formation and in

Deranged modulatory midbrain opioid and gonadotrophin functions: relevance to Tourette's syndrome.

In the following communication we discuss evidence suggesting that an abnormal opioid-gonadotrophin interaction at the midbrain may be essential to the clinical expression of vocal tics in Tourette's Syndrome (TS). Data derived from animal studies and the striking similarity between the symptomatology of TS and encephalitis lethargica (EL) add further support to our hypothesis implicating an abnormal opioid-gonadotrophin interaction in the pathophysiology of TS.

Differences in the dopaminergic reward system in rats that passively and actively behave in the Porsolt test.

The aim of the study was to assess appetitive responses and central dopaminergic neurotransmission in passive and active rats divided according to their immobility time in the Porsolt swim test and exposed to restraint stress. Passive rats had more episodes of appetitive 50-kHz ultrasonic vocalization (USV) during rat encounter after social isolation and spent significantly more time in the amphetamine-associated context in conditioned place preference test, compared to active rats. Restraint stress decreased sucrose preference, but increased appetitive vocalization and reinforced the conditio

Effects of intraaccumbens amphetamine on production of 50 kHz vocalizations in three lines of selectively bred Long-Evans rats.

Effects of direct injections of amphetamine into the shell of the nucleus accumbens were studied in three lines of Long-Evans rats, two of which had been selected for low and high rates of 50 kHz calls in adolescence in response to a standard social stimulation, and compared to results from randomly selected rats. Injections of amphetamine into the medial shell of the nucleus accumbens significantly increased the number of 50 kHz vocalizations in the high line but not low line, as compared to the random controls. This response was shell specific and antagonized by raclopride. Rats of the high
