Demographic predictors of trauma and depression in war-affected children from Poland and Ukraine: Implications for prevention of mental health problems.

OBJECTIVE: The mental health consequences of war on children are well-documented, with early research emphasizing the critical role of caregiver presence in mitigating trauma. However, the ongoing conflict in Ukraine presents a novel context, requiring renewed investigation of the differential impact of direct war exposure and displacement on child and adolescent well-being. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted with 222 participants aged 7-21 years from Poland, Ukraine, and displaced Ukrainian populations (March 2024-March 2025, Poland/Ukraine). Depressive and trauma symptoms were a…

Intimate partner violence in the post-war context: Women's experiences and community leaders' perceptions in the Eastern Province of Sri Lanka.

BACKGROUND: Exposure to armed conflict and/or war have been linked to an increase in intimate partner violence (IPV) against women. A substantial body of work has focused on non-partner rape and sexual violence in war and post-war contexts, but research about IPV is limited, particularly in Asian settings. This paper presents the finding of a study conducted in the Eastern Province of Sri Lanka. The study explored women's experiences of and responses to IPV as well as how health and social service providers perceive the problem. It also explored the IPV-related services and supports available

Post-traumatic stress disorder in the military veteran.

1. Military personnel exposed to war-zone trauma are at risk for developing PTSD. Those at greatest risk are those exposed to the highest levels of war-zone stress, those wounded in action, those incarcerated as prisoners of war, and those who manifest acute war-zone reactions, such as CSR. 2. In addition to problems directly attributable to PTSD symptoms per se, individuals with this disorder frequently suffer from other comorbid psychiatric disorders, such as depression, other anxiety disorders, and alcohol or substance abuse/dependence. The resulting constellation of psychiatric symptoms fr

Trajectories of self-rated health among veterans: a latent growth curve analysis of the impact of posttraumatic symptoms.

OBJECTIVES: To examine the effects of combat stress reaction (CSR) and posttraumatic stress symptoms (PTS) on the level and trajectories of self-rated health (SRH) over 20 years after war exposure. METHODS: A total of 675 veterans comprising two groups, a CSR group (n = 369) and a matched control group without CSR (n = 306), were assessed in a prospective longitudinal design, 1, 2, 3, and 20 years after their participation in the 1982 Lebanon War. SRH and PTS were assessed repeatedly, at each point of measurement. RESULTS: The CSR participants showed more impaired initial SRH than the contro…

Inspiratory and expiratory high-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) in patients with chemical warfare agents exposure.

Chemical warfare agents (CWA) including sulfur mustard (SM) were commonly used in Iran-Iraq war. Respiratory problems are the greatest cause of long-term disability among people who had combat exposure to SM. High-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) has been accepted as the imaging modality of choice in these patients. We used expiratory HRCT findings in comparison to inspiratory HRCT for demonstration of pulmonary damage in these patients. HRCT in deep inspiration as well as full expiration was performed in 473 patients with a history of chemical gas exposure during the war and the results

Psychiatric disorders among adolescent Jordanian returnees from Kuwait during the 1991 Gulf War.

Adolescent Jordanian returnees from Kuwait during the 1991 Gulf War were expected to have elevated rates of psychiatric disorders, therefore their mental health status was examined. We evaluated 1376 newly enrolled students in two public universities in northern Jordan using an Arabic translation of the self-administered General Health Questionnaire. The overall rate of psychiatric disorders among the study sample was 23.3%; the rate among adolescent returnees (30.8%) was significantly higher than among other adolescents (22.4%). Although psychiatric disorders were generally common among Jorda

Pregnancy Outcomes of Wives of Chemical and Non-Chemical Weapons Exposed Veterans in Ahvaz, Iran: A Retrospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Sulphur mustard (HD) is a lipophilic caustic alkylating vesicant (blister agent) that has mutagenic and carcinogenic effects. Among the studied perturbations are long-term genitourinary (GU) and fertility effects. Approximately 50,000 Iranian soldiers and civilians were exposed to HD during the Iraq-Iran war (1980-1989). This study questioned the wives of Iraq-Iran war veterans to determine the effects of male HD-exposure on pregnancy complications, adverse pregnancy outcomes, and secondary infertility. METHODS: A retrospective, survey-based cohort study was conducted of wives of

Expression of selected neuropeptides in pathogenesis of bullous pemphigoid and dermatitis herpetiformis.

Sulfur mustard gas is one of the chemical warfare gases that roughly about 45000 soldiers continue to suffer long-lasting consequences of exposure during the Iran-Iraq war between 1980 and 1988. According to the common pulmonary lesions due to this gas exposure, we studied gross and microscopic pulmonary lesions in cadavers and also assessed the main causes of mortality caused by mustard gas exposure. A case-series study was performed on hospital record files of 100 cadavers that were exposed with documented sulfur mustard gas during the Iran-Iraq war from 1979 to 1988 and autopsied in legal m

Unraveling specifics of mental health symptoms in war survivors who fled versus stayed in the area of conflict using network analysis.

BACKGROUND: War survivors often report symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, anxiety, and somatization. Hence, understanding symptom constellations among different populations of war survivors is critical. METHODS: Using the network approach to psychopathology, we examined symptom centrality for these conditions in war survivors from Balkan countries who had stayed in the area of former conflict compared to those individuals from Balkan countries who had fled to Western European countries (N = 4,167) with the Impact of Events Scale-Revised and the Brief Symptom Invent

[Developing indices for caloric restriction related to World War II--a pilot study].

BACKGROUND: The vast numbers of studies regarding caloric restriction (CR) and breast cancer risk are based on war-related extreme situations. Studying the impact of CR in Jews during World War II (WW II) is challenging due to its variance and duration. OBJECTIVE: To develop novel research tools in order to assess CR exposure in Jews that occurred more than 60 years ago during WW II. METHODS: A pilot study based on Israeli women born in Europe in 1926-45, who lived there during WWII. Primary incident breast cancer patients and population-based controls were interviewed using a detailed quest

War-related displacement, conflict intensity, and treatment delivery factors in opioid agonist maintenance treatment discontinuation following Russia's invasion of Ukraine: a national cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Ukraine has Europe's second-largest HIV epidemic, driven mainly by injection opioid use. Opioid agonist maintenance treatment (OAMT) is the most effective treatment for opioid use disorder (OUD) and a key HIV prevention strategy. Following Russia's invasion of Ukraine on 24 February 2022, continuity of OAMT was threatened. We examined the effects of displacement, war exposure, and treatment delivery factors on OAMT discontinuation during the first two years of the expanded war. METHODS: In this retrospective analysis of a prospective national cohort study, we used individual-level…

Respiratory tract infections in the military environment.

Military personnel fighting in contemporary battlefields as well as those participating in combat training are at risk of contracting respiratory infections. Epidemiological studies have demonstrated that soldiers deployed to the harsh environment have higher rates of newly reported respiratory symptoms than non-deployers. Acute respiratory diseases are the principle reason for outpatient treatment and hospitalization among military personnel, with an incidence exceeding that of the adult civilian population by up to three-fold. Adenoviruses, influenza A and B viruses, Streptococcus pneumoniae

Standardised mortality ratios in people exposed to sulphur mustard during the Iran-Iraq war: a retrospective study with 39-year follow-up.

OBJECTIVES: Sulphur mustard (SM) is a chemical weapon agent that was extensively used by Iraqi troops during the Iran-Iraq war (1980-1988), resulting in exposure among Iranian military personnel and civilians. However, there is limited and conflicting information about the long-term mortality effects of SM exposure. This study aimed to determine the standardised mortality ratios (SMRs) in individuals exposed to SM gas during the Iran-Iraq war. STUDY DESIGN: This was a retrospective follow-up study. METHODS: Data were obtained from the Veterans and Martyr Affair Foundation of Iran (VMAF) rega

Substance and Behavioural Addictions Among Evacuees: Findings From Israeli Swords of Iron War.

War-related evacuation is a stressful event that may cause mental health problems, which, in turn, might lead to increases in substance and behavioural addictions. We used data collected online during the Swords of Iron to examine associations between being evacuated during the war, mental health, problematic substance use, and behavioural addictions. Study 1 surveyed young adults (ages 18-26) from various areas of Israel. Measures included self-reported anxiety, depression, problematic consumption of alcohol, cannabis, and prescription drugs, and problematic gambling, gaming, and pornography.

The war-related illness and injury study centers: a resource for deployment-related health concerns.

Combat veterans often return from deployment having experienced a wide range of exposures, symptoms, and medical conditions. The Department of Veterans Affairs established war-related illness and injury study centers to serve combat veterans with unexplained illnesses. We report the exposures, clinical status, and utilization of 53 combat veterans who participated in the National Referral Program (NRP) from January 2002 until March 2004. Participants were primarily male (81%) and served in the Persian Gulf War (79%). Common diagnoses were chronic fatigue syndrome (n = 23, 43%), neurotic depres

Anniversary reactions in Gulf War veterans: a follow-up inquiry 6 years after the war.

OBJECTIVE: The goal of this study was to assess the occurrence of anniversary reactions in Gulf War veterans 6 years after the conclusion of the war. METHOD: Subjects were administered questionnaires and asked to identify specific months of best and worst functioning and months of least or most symptoms of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) for the 12 months before the study. Months of negative experiences were compared with previously documented dates of exposure to traumatic events during the war. Similar reports were also obtained from the veterans' spouses in order to assess corroborati

Psychiatric lessons learned in Kandahar.

Not since the Korean War have the Canadian Forces engaged in combat missions like those in Afghanistan. Combat, asymmetric warfare, violent insurgency and the constant threat of improvised explosive devices all contribute to the psychological stressors experienced by Canadian soldiers. Mental health teams deployed with the soldiers and provided assessment, treatment and education. Lessons learned included refuting the myth that all psychological disorders would be related to trauma; confirming that most patients do well after exposure to trauma; confirming that treating disorders in a war zone

The Impact of Adverse News About the Gaza War on the Health of Iranian Elderly People: A Qualitative Study.

INTRODUCTION: Studies on the responses of older people who have experienced disasters are contradictory, suggesting two opposing theoretical approaches: the vulnerability and resilience approaches. Therefore, this qualitative study examines the impact of the media on Iranian elderly people during the Gaza war in 2024. METHODS: This qualitative study employed purposive sampling to select 12 elderly participants aged 65 years and older. Data collection was done from September to December 2024 through semi-structured interviews. The interviews were transcribed, and the data analysis was conducte

Older adults' subjective age and post-traumatic symptoms during Wartime: The role of future time perspective.

The traumatic events of October 7, 2023, and the ensuing war between Israel and Hamas has resulted in unprecedented challenges to the Israeli society, notwithstanding increased post-traumatic symptomatology (PTS) in younger and older Israelis. Recent findings have highlighted the importance of positive subjective aging perceptions for various aspects of older adults' physical and psychological health. As trauma may interfere with one's ability to think positively and plan for the future, the current study examined the interactive effect of subjective age and future time perspective on Israeli

Konzo associated with war in Mozambique.

We report an epidemic of konzo, symmetric spastic paraparesis associated with cassava consumption and cyanide exposure: 384 patients were treated in rehabilitation centres; the prevalence rate in a badly affected area was 30/1000. Most patients were children over 3 and women. Owing to war, communities turned to bitter cassava as their staple and took shortcuts in its processing. When the war ended, they continued to depend on inadequately processed bitter cassava. The epidemic lasted 2 years (the last year of war and the first of peace) with peaks each year during the cassava harvest. Although
