Disclosure of anogenital warts to sexual partners.

OBJECTIVES: To investigate psychological functioning, relationship factors, stigma perception, disclosure outcomes and regret about the disclosure decision in people being treated for anogenital warts, comparing disclosers and non-disclosers and evaluating the possible predictors of disclosure. METHOD: A self-completion questionnaire was completed by 54 participants recruited from a London genitourinary medicine clinic. There were 36 disclosers and 18 non-disclosers. RESULTS: Disclosers were significantly less anxious than non-disclosers (p<0.01). Compared with non-disclosers, disclosers als…

A practical approach to warts in the emergency department.

Although cutaneous warts are one of the most common skin conditions affecting children, their management can be challenging, especially in complex cases and even more so during a single emergency department encounter. Anogenital warts require particular attention because of their possible but nonspecific association with sexual abuse. This review will focus on cutaneous warts and anogenital warts, with a discussion of their recognition and treatment, especially in the emergency department. The medicolegal implications of anogenital warts in children are also reviewed.

Pain induced by photodynamic therapy of warts.

BACKGROUND: Photodynamic therapy with topical 5-aminolevulinic acid (ALA), followed by irradiation with red light (ALA-PDT), is used for non-melanoma skin cancer and other dermatological diseases. Pain during and after light exposure is a well-known adverse advent that may be a limiting factor for treatment, particularly, in viral warts. METHODS: To assess the pain induced by ALA-PDT, we asked 45 patients enrolled in a randomized, placebo-controlled trial with six consecutive ALA- and placebo-PDT treatments for recalcitrant foot and hand warts to fill in questionnaires about pain immediately …

Treatment of recalcitrant plantar warts with imiquimod.

Myrmecia are viral warts that result from the coalescence of plantar or palmar warts into large plaques. Treatment of these warts involves physical or chemical destruction of the verrucae, potent keratolytics or immunotherapy. Imiquimod 5% cream is a novel topical immunomodulator that has been used successfully in the treatment of genital and common warts. We report its successful use in a 35-year-old immunocompetent man who had had resistant plantar warts for 15 years.

Treatment of genital warts - what's the evidence?

Genital warts are usually asymptomatic, and rarely cause discomfort. Once the patient is aware of them the main symptom is their cosmetic appearance and resultant psychological consequences. The ideal treatment outcome would be complete viral eradication, but this is not possible. Treatments focus on the removal of exophytic warts, leaving the surrounding subclinical and latent human papillomavirus (HPV) infection as areas of possible transmission and recurrence. Effective treatment does reduce HPV viral load, so the infection is reduced if not completely eradicated. Treatment is often painful…

Is oral contraceptive associated with genital warts?

OBJECTIVE: To measure the association between oral contraceptive use and the prevalence of genital warts in women. METHODS: Cross sectional case control study comparing oral contraceptive use in women with and without genital warts attending a city centre genitourinary medicine clinic controlling for recent sexual activity, the presence of other sexually transmitted infections, socio-economic class and history of pregnancy using a multivariate logistic regression model. RESULTS: After controlling for potential confounding variables women with genital warts were significantly more likely to b…

Modern management of genital warts in women.

Genital warts are common and are a sexually transmitted disease affecting all socioeconomic groups and life-styles. They are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV) and are highly contagious. Genital warts are often symptomless, but occasionally cause itching, bleeding after intercourse burning and pain. Referral to a Genitourinary Medicine Clinic is recommended, where specialist treatment and counselling are available. Special care is needed with children or if the patient is pregnant. At the clinic, patients may be shown how to treat themselves at home with podophyllotoxin.

New therapies for the treatment of genital warts.

The treatment of genital warts with cytodestructive agents such as podophyllin and trichloroacetic acid continues to impose a heavy burden on the workload of genitourinary medicine clinics. Consequently clinics are now looking to new, economical treatments that will improve the management of patients with genital warts. The most promising of these new agents is podophyllotoxin, which is now available in pharmaceutically pure form tailored for the home treatment of external genital warts in males and females.

[Eruptive viral warts of the burn area].

Eruptive viral warts were observed in a second-to-third degree burn area in a 68-year-old woman; the warts healed spontaneously and completely after approximately 3 weeks. HPV-2-related DNA was demonstrated by Southern blot analysis.

Colposcopic evaluation of men with genital warts.

Colposcopy, which is the examination of the female genital tract that generally is performed after the application of acetic acid, has been an effective tool in the diagnosis of genital warts (condyloma acuminatum) in women for years. With the help of colposcopy, both microscopic and flat warts that cannot be visualized with traditional, noncolposcopic methods can be seen and, hence, treated. Recently, studies reported in the gynecologic and urologic literature have evaluated the usefulness of colposcopy in male patients. We present a patient whose genital warts were recalcitrant to treatment.…

Different papillomaviruses as the causes of oral warts.

We have observed four patients with oral papillomas. Two children had oral mucosal lesions characteristic of focal epithelial hyperplasia, a young man had common, wart-like lesions on his hard palate, and a male immunosuppressed renal allograft recipient had condyloma-like lesions on his gingivae. Papillomavirus-like particles were seen by electron microscopy in lesions from both patients with focal epithelial hyperplasia. No structural antigens for human papillomavirus (HPV) 1, 2, 3, or 5 were found by immunofluorescent microscopy, but further evidence of the presence of a papillomavirus was
