Flavonoid production via solid-state fermentation of agro-industrial waste with biopesticidal fungi: screening, optimization and scale-up.

Flavonoids are bioactive compounds with significant applications in agriculture due to their antimicrobial properties, ability to mitigate abiotic stress and role in promoting plant-microbe interactions. This study explores the potential of producing flavonoids through solid-state fermentation (SSF) using agro-industrial residues as substrates for filamentous fungi. Trichoderma harzianum, Trichoderma viride and Beauveria bassiana were evaluated for their ability to increase total flavonoids content on different substrates, in a screening process at laboratory scale, achieving a production of 0

High-solid thermophilic methanogenic degradation of alcohol fermentation waste: Biogas production, operation stability and energy recovery potential.

Alcohol fermentation waste (AFW) is a by-product of the alcohol manufacturing process with a rich carbohydrate and protein, serving as a suitable substrate for biomethane production via anaerobic digestion (AD). This study investigated the methanogenesis feasibility of AD treating AFW (total solids of 100.0 ± 1.0 g/L) in a thermophilic continuous stirred-tank reactor and explored the optimal operational conditions by regulating the hydraulic retention time (HRT) from 100 to 60, 30, and 20 days, based on system stability, CH4 yield, and organic matter degradation efficiency. The results reveale

Impacts of concentrated leachate recirculation on methane production suppression, odorous gas emissions, and salinity accumulation in municipal solid waste.

The recirculation of concentrated leachate (CL) in municipal solid waste landfills has been shown to effectively reduce organic biochemical indicators in the effluent; however, it may also increase salinity within the landfill, raising concerns about its long-term sustainability. In this study, a laboratory-scale bioreactor was established to periodically inject nanofiltration-treated CL into waste with high and low organic matter content. Variations in waste composition, leachate characteristics, and landfill gas production were monitored. Results indicated that CL recirculation inhibited was

Efficient biodiesel production from waste cooking oil using a bifunctional Ce/Mn/γ-Al₂O₃ catalysts.

As the demand for sustainable energy sources intensifies, biodiesel emerges as a compelling renewable alternative to petroleum-based fuels. Leveraging waste cooking oil (WCO) as a feedstock not only offers an environmentally friendly fuel source but also addresses waste disposal issues. However, biodiesel production from WCO faces challenges, particularly due to its high free fatty acid (FFA) content, which can hinder efficient conversion and lead to soap formation in traditional alkaline-catalysed processes. This study seeks to overcome these challenges by developing and optimizing a bifuncti

Biodiesel production from waste cooking oils - Application of green chemistry principles to the multi-objective optimisation of alkaline transesterification.

In the present work, alkaline transesterification converted waste household cooking oil into biodiesel, a renewable alternative to fossil fuels. After characterising oil and choosing the independent variables of the reaction (methanol-to-oil molar ratio, catalyst concentration, temperature, and stirring), three dependent variables were selected to analyse biodiesel production globally, considering technical, energetic and environmental aspects. Therefore, biodiesel yield, energy intensity, and green chemistry balance were chosen as responses. This work considered four normalised green metrics

Ir(triNHC)-Catalyzed Upcycling of Waste PET for Lactic Acid Production with Sustainable Isolation via Bipolar Membrane Electrodialysis.

For the upcycling of waste polyethylene terephthalate (PET), encompassing both colored and fabric PET materials, we investigated the Ir(triNHC)-catalyzed dehydrogenative coupling of PET and methanol, leading to the production of sodium lactate with good yields. We proposed a sustainable method for isolating lactic acid from the catalytic reaction mixture of sodium lactate and regenerating the base using bipolar membrane electrodialysis (BMED). This isolation method demonstrated high effectiveness, achieving isolation of lactic acid while maintaining economic feasibility at $ 0.10 per kg of lac

A green approach of biochar-supported magnetic nanocomposites from white tea waste: Production, characterization and plausible synthesis mechanisms.

Green synthesized magnetic nanoparticles were impregnated into biochar matrix (EWTWB) to produce biochar-supported magnetic nanocomposite (GSMB). Instead of chemicals, organic matters in white tea waste extract were used as reductant, surfactant and functional capping materials. Magnetic biochar produced from traditional methods of pyrolysis (PMB) and co-precipitation (Co-PreMB) were prepared to compare their properties with GSMB. Xray Diffraction confirmed the main component of green synthesized particles is Fe3O4. When compared with PMB and Co-PreMB, the Fe3O4 produced by co-precipitation me

Non-sterile fermentation of food waste using thermophilic and alkaliphilic Bacillus licheniformis YNP5-TSU for 2,3-butanediol production.

Conversion of food waste into 2,3-butanediol (2,3-BDO) via microbial fermentation provides a promising way to reduce waste disposal to landfills and produce sustainable chemicals. However, sterilization of food waste, an energy- and capital-costly process, is generally required before fermentation to avoid any contamination, which reduces the energy net output and economic feasibility of food waste fermentation. In this study, we investigated the non-sterile fermentation of food waste to produce 2,3-BDO using a newly isolated thermophilic and alkaliphilic B. licheniformis YNP5-TSU. Three unita

Advanced process integration for supercritical production of biodiesel: Residual waste heat recovery via organic Rankine cycle (ORC).

Biodiesel production using supercritical methanolysis has received immense interest over the last few years. It has the ability to convert high acid value feedstock into biodiesel using a single-pot reaction. However, the energy intensive process is the main disadvantage of supercritical biodiesel process. Herein, a conceptual design for the integration of supercritical biodiesel process with organic Rankine cycle (ORC) is presented to recover residual hot streams and to generate electric power. This article provides energy and techno-economic comparative study for three developed scenarios as

A new method for the simultaneous enhancement of methane yield and reduction of hydrogen sulfide production in the anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge.

The biogas generated from anaerobic digestion (AD) also includes undesirable by-product such as hydrogen sulfide (H2S), which must be removed before the biogas can be used as a clean energy source. Therefore, it is necessary to find an appropriate strategy to simultaneously enhance the methane yield and reduce H2S production. An efficient strategy-pretreating sludge at pH 10 for 8d and adjusting the system at neutral pH to produce methane for 20d-is reported for the synchronous enhancement of methane production and reduction of H2S production during AD. The experimental results showed that the
