Toward rapid reduction of carbon tetrachloride in water by zero-valent aluminum/persulfate system.

The oxidation performance of the zero-valent aluminum (ZVAl)/persulfate (PS) combined system had been studied by researchers in the past, which relied on the activation of PS by ZVAl to generate potent oxidizing radicals (•OH and SO4•-) to degrade pollutants. However, ZVAl is a strong reductant and its reduction effect cannot be ignored. The reductive performance of the ZVAl/PS combined system is still unknown. Therefore, carbon tetrachloride (CT), an antioxidant organic pollutant, was selected as the target pollutant to test the reductive performance of the ZVAl/PS system in this study. We fo

Risk assessment of Cryptosporidium intake in drinking water treatment plant by a combination of predictive models and event-tree and fault-tree techniques.

Risk-informed decision making permits a more effective water safety management. In this framework, this article introduces the rationale and proposes a new approach to carry out a quantitative risk assessment along the water chain, from river source to tap water, by integrating predictive modelling combined with event-tree and fault-tree techniques. The model developed by this approach could not only account for normal but also for abnormal process conditions in the water treatment plant, as well as assess the real impact of the applied safety controls, such as turbidity control. A sensitivity

Removal Kinetics of Four Leacher Herbicides Through Solar Heterogeneous Photocatalysis as Influenced by Water Matrix Components.

This work focuses on the effect of dissolved substances on the photocatalytic degradation of four herbicides, metribuzin and terbuthylazine (triazine) and chlorotoluron and isoproturon (phenylurea) in three different water matrix (deionized, mineral and leaching water). To study the effect of heterogeneous photocatalysis on their degradation, TiO2 and ZnO were used as photocatalysts in tandem with an oxidant (Na2S2O8). Results show that the addition of both semiconductor materials significantly enhances degradation of the herbicides although in different proportions. Similar effectivity of bot

Degradation of carbamazepine and disinfection byproducts formation in water distribution system in the presence of copper corrosion products.

Copper ion (Cu2+), a common corrosion product released from copper pipes, is widely present in water distribution system (WDS). Cu2+ was confirmed to be capable to catalyze the decay of monochloramine (NH2Cl), which is a commonly used disinfectant and need to maintain a minimum concentration in WDS. Cu2+ and NH2Cl form a system in WDS and their interaction with other substances in WDS is unclear. In this study, the performance of Cu2+/NH2Cl system on degradation of trace pollutants, taking carbamazepine (CBZ) as an example, in WDS was investigated, and significant promotion on CBZ degradation

Pre-ozonation of surface water: An effective water treatment process to reduce the risk of infection by Giardia in drinking water.

Giardia is a protozoan parasite of primary concern for the drinking water industry. High contact times are required for Giardia inactivation by chlorination, while ozonation may be effective at much lower Ct products. In this study, we have assessed the occurrence of Giardia cysts in raw water, and in chlorinated or ozonated water from a drinking water treatment plant (DWTP) in Brazil, over a 16-month period. Moreover, we analyzed the effects of primary disinfection on cysts, and calculated the infection risk caused by the occurrence of Giardia cysts in raw water, chlorinated or ozonated water

Catalytic ozonation of iohexol with α-Fe0.9Mn0.1OOH in water: Efficiency, degradation mechanism and toxicity evaluation.

Iohexol, a widely used iodinated X-ray contrast media, is difficult to completely degrade with the traditional water treatment process. Catalytic ozonation with synthesized α-Fe0.9Mn0.1OOH as the catalyst can significantly promote the degradation of iohexol relative to that with ozonation alone. Hydroxyl radicals play a predominant role during the degradation of iohexol. The effect of various factors, including catalyst dose, ozone dose, iohexol concentration and water matrix factors, on the catalytic performance were investigated. The presence of α-Fe0.9Mn0.1OOH in the catalytic system can si

Free available chlorine initiated Baeyer-Villiger oxidation: A key mechanism for chloroform formation during aqueous chlorination of benzophenone UV filters.

Chloroform, a regulated disinfection by-product in water, is often generated during chlorination disinfection treatment. However, the formation of chloroform is heavily dependent on the molecular structures of precursors. Moreover, compounds containing ketone moiety are ubiquitous in water environments. However, it is unclear if they can generate chloroform during chlorination. In this study, 14 benzophenones (BPs), efficient and widely used UV filters, with different substituents were selected to explore chloroform formation during chlorination. All 14 BPs generated chloroform, with yields de

Influence of water matrix and hydrochar properties on removal of organic and inorganic contaminants.

The removal of contaminants from water using low-cost adsorbents has been widely studied, yet studies employing a realistic water matrix are still lacking. This study investigated the removal of organic compounds (trimethoprim, fluconazole, and perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA)) and metals (As, Zn, and Cu) from landfill leachate. Additionally, tests in pure water, humic acid, and ion matrices were carried out to better understand how the water matrix affects adsorption. The hydrochars were produced from four feedstocks at three carbonization temperatures. The results show that the removal efficien

Giardia spp. cysts and Cryptosporidium spp. oocysts in drinking water treatment residues: comparison of recovery methods for quantity assessment.

Water treatment plant (WTP) residues, e.g. sludge and filter backwash water (FBW), may contain pathogenic microorganisms, as Giardia spp. and Cryptosporidium spp. However, recovering protozoa from such matrices lacks a formal and precise protocol, which is imperative to improve research in their detection, removal and inactivation. The latter includes a deeper challenge as some recovery methods may compromise viability. This study applied different recovery methods for G. muris cysts and C. parvum oocysts spiked into settled sludge and FBW obtained from a bench treatment. Procedures in sludge

Pathogen infection risk to recreational water users, associated with surface waters impacted by de facto and indirect potable reuse activities.

Water deficit, exacerbated by global population increases and climate change, necessitates the investigation of alternative non-traditional water sources to augment existing supplies. Indirect potable reuse (IPR) represents a promising alternative water source in water-stressed regions. Of high concern is the presence of pathogenic microorganisms in wastewater, such as enteric viruses, protozoa and bacteria. Therefore, a greater understanding of the potential impact to human health is required. The aim of this research was to use a quantitative microbial risk assessment (QMRA) approach to calc

The removal of chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons from water using reactive activated carbon: the influence of synthesis factors and reaction environments.

Granular activated carbon (GAC) composite incorporated with nanoscale zerovalent iron (nZVI) particles (reactive activated carbon, RAC) was synthesized by the liquid phase precipitation method and used to remove chlorinated aliphatic hydrocarbons (CAHs) from water. The influence of synthesis factors, such as base carbon types and annealing treatment temperature, and environmental factors, such as the molecular structure of CAHs, common ionic species and natural organic matter, on the removal capacities of RAC for CAHs was investigated. Mesoporous carbon with high hardness is a good candidate f

Recovery of Cryptosporidium and Giardia organisms from surface water by counter-flow refining microfiltration.

As waterborne parasitic cryptosporidiosis and giardiasis outbreaks continue globally, monitoring of Cryptosporidium parvum and Giardia lamblia in surface water continues to be challenging. Lack of non-clogging and high-efficiency methods for recovery of C. parvum oocysts and G. lamblia cysts in environmental water strongly limits the sensitivity of detection methods for these protozoan organisms. In this work, the Counter-Flow Micro-Refinery (CFMR) system was developed by employing the novel counter-flow microfiltration principle to enrich (oo)cysts for subsequent analytical purposes. The CFMR

An approach for the reporting of microbiological results from water systems.

Many statistical textbooks lend themselves readily to the analysis of physical and chemical data. This is due to the material gathered from such analyses, following, in most cases, normal distribution. Normally distributed data can be examined over time to allow the obtained profile to be studied for variation. Microbiological data rarely follows such distribution. However, such approaches can be adapted for non-normally distributed (or skewed) microbiological data. This paper applies Shewhart Control Charts to the trend analysis of microbiological data from two different pharmaceutical water

Chemical and Physical Processes Governing Chromium(VI) Removal by Continuous Flow-Through Iron Electrocoagulation for Drinking Water Treatment.

Iron electrocoagulation (EC) is a promising approach for removing hexavalent chromium [Cr(VI)] from water. Understanding the chemical and physical processes that govern Cr(VI) removal under dynamic and environmentally relevant conditions can enable optimal designs of treatment systems. This study evaluated the rates, extents, and mechanisms of Cr(VI) removal in a flow-through EC reactor followed by a flocculation chamber and a settling basin. Using a short EC reactor residence time, low iron doses, and realistic water chemistries, the experiments revealed both advantages and challenges of EC.

Advancing the identification of toxic by-products in disinfected water by integrating effect-directed analysis and nontarget screening.

The disinfection of drinking water inevitably generates disinfection by-products (DBPs), potentially jeopardizing human health. While previous research has mainly focused on risk from regulated DBPs, recent studies have indicated that these known compounds can only explain a small fraction of toxicity observed in disinfected water. Identifying toxic DBPs is therefore a critical step forward. Effect-directed analysis (EDA) has emerged as a promising tool for identifying the toxicity drivers in complex mixtures. Here, we examined the potential and challenges of applying EDA to identify toxic DBP

Utilising adaptive real-time control in removing organic chemicals in stormwater biofilters.

Real-time control (RTC) can improve pollutant removal in stormwater biofilters, but existing strategies are largely static and rule-based, limiting their ability to respond to naturally variable rainfall conditions. This study developed and evaluated an adaptive RTC strategy (Adaptive-RTC) for stormwater biofilters, combining rolling-window rainfall forecasting with redox-based operational thresholds to improve water quality. Performance of Adaptive-RTC was compared with that of conventional biofilters (Non-RTC) across 11 historical rainfall events with diverse hydrologic characteristics, moni

Engineered polyaramides for extraction of bioamines from water.

Biogenic amines (BAs) are prevalent in fermented foods, protein-rich meats, and brewed food additives. High concentrations of BAs can induce health issues such as headaches, high blood pressure, and palpitations. Polyaramides (PAs) prepared from the reaction of trimesoyl chloride with ethylene diamine (ED), p-xylene diamine (PXD), and m-xylene diamine (MXD) and characterized using FTIR, XRD, SEM, TGA, and DLS measurements. All PAs were used for the removal of five biogenic amines (i.e., putrescine, spermidine, spermine, tryptamine, and tryptophan) from water. All PAs showed high removal effici
