Detection of pepper mild mottle virus as an indicator for drinking water quality in Hanoi, Vietnam, in large volume of water after household treatment.

The aims of this study were to examine the removal of bacteria and viruses by household point-of-use (POU) treatments and to apply a previously developed large-volume virus concentration method (∼20 L). First, the removal of microbes by household POU treatment was investigated in the laboratory. Second, the prevalence of viruses in drinking water sources for households and the removal efficiency of microbes by POU treatments in two suburban communities in Hanoi, Vietnam, were investigated. Indigenous pepper mild mottle virus (PMMoV) was used as the main target together with adenovirus, Aichi v

The relevance of European Biota Quality Standards on the ecological water quality as determined by the multimetric macro-invertebrate index: A Flemish case study.

European Biota Quality Standards (EQSbiota), for compounds with low water solubility and high biomagnification, were created to sustain water quality and protect top predators and humans from secondary poisoning. In reality, for multiple compounds, an exceedance of these standards is often reported in literature without a decrease in ecological water quality determined by biotic indices. In the present study, threshold concentrations were defined in biota (from 44 sampling locations throughout Flanders (Belgium)), above which a good ecological water quality, assessed by the Multimetric Macroin

Determining the potential link between irrigation water quality and the microbiological quality of onions by phenotypic and genotypic characterization of Escherichia coli isolates.

The potential transfer of human pathogenic bacteria present in irrigation water onto fresh produce was investigated, because surface water sources used for irrigation purposes in South Africa have increasingly been reported to be contaminated with enteric bacterial pathogens. A microbiological analysis was performed of a selected river in Limpopo Province, South Africa, that is often contaminated with raw sewage from municipal sewage works and overhead irrigated onions produced on a commercial farm. Counts of Escherichia coli, coliforms, aerobic bacteria, fungi, and yeasts and the prevalence o

Impacts of vessel-generated waste on seasonal dynamics of water quality in the Kirtonkhola River, Bangladesh.

Rivers play a vital role in sustaining ecosystems and human livelihoods, yet increasing anthropogenic activities threaten their ecological integrity. This study assessed seasonal variations and relationships among key water quality parameters, including pH, electrical conductivity (EC), total dissolved solids (TDS), and dissolved oxygen (DO) in the Kirtonkhola River, Bangladesh, to evaluate seasonal water-quality patterns in relation to passenger vessel activities and associated waste discharge. Monthly samples were collected from two sites with contrasting vessel activity between March 2018 a

Effect of Water Regimen on Fruit Growth, Metabolomic Profile, and Postharvest Quality of 'Hass' Avocados.

Preharvest climatic conditions and irrigation management are decisive determinants of avocado postharvest performance. Avocado trees are highly susceptible to the water regimen, conditions that disrupt carbon assimilation, mineral nutrient uptake, and biomass partitioning. This study evaluated the effects of deficit irrigation imposed during early stages of fruit growth, coinciding with active cell division, on fruit development and postharvest quality of 'Hass' avocado. Deficit and excess irrigation induced physiological stress, reducing stem water potential (≈-1 MPa) and altering photochemic

Vitamin C as a nitrosation inhibitor: A modelling study across dietary patterns and water quality.

Rising dietary and drinking-water intake of nitrate (NO3-) and nitrite (NO2-) presents a significant public health concern. After ingestion, a portion of NO3- enters the enterosalivary circulation, where oral bacteria reduce it to NO2-. When swallowed, NO2- enters the acidic gastric environment, where it can react to form N-nitroso compounds (NOCs), many of which are suspected carcinogens. However, epidemiological evidence for this link remains mixed, likely due to the protective effects of antioxidants such as vitamin C, which is present in many high-NO3- foods (e.g. leafy vegetables). To bet

Response of urban lake water quality to monthly hydro-meteorological drivers at the catchment scale.

Urban storm-water runoff transports nutrients into water bodies, where high temperature and wind accelerate pollution risks. Understanding the impact of hydro-meteorological and urban development factors, specifically gross domestic product (GDP), population density, and green cover rate, on water quality under climate change is essential for integrated urban water management. Focusing on East Lake in Wuhan (2012–2023), this study analyzes interannual and seasonal variations in precipitation, temperature, wind, and total phosphorus (TP) concentration, evaluates their statistical relationships,

[Distribution and Water Quality Impact of Sediment Phosphorus Fractions in Tributaries of the Three Gorges Reservoir].

In recent years, algal blooms have occurred frequently in the backwater areas of tributaries of the Three Gorges Reservoir. The retention and release of sediment phosphorus might be a key factor, so it is necessary to conduct in-depth research on its impact. This study took the four important tributaries of the Three Gorges Reservoir, the Xiangxi River, Daning River, Caotang River, and Xiaojiang River, as the research object to evaluate the potential release of sediment phosphorus in these tributaries and its impact on water quality, using investigation and incubation experiments. The results

Application of ultrasound-assisted atomized plasma-activated water to improve the quality properties of grapes.

Immersion washing disinfects microorganisms but requires drying before packaging and can detach grapes. Ultrasonic atomization generates mist and addresses these limitations. Plasma-activated water, a novel non-thermal technology, remains unexplored in atomization mode. This study applied atomized PAW to treat grapes, observing quality attributes during storage (day 0-7) at room temperature. Attributes included physicochemical properties (weight loss, decay incidence, firmness, titratable acidity (TA), total soluble solids (TSS)), microbial quality (counts of aerobic mesophilic bacteria (AMC),

Cryptosporidium prevalence in calves and its effect on local water quality prior to abstraction and treatment.

Cryptosporidium spp., particularly Cryptosporidium parvum, pose a significant threat to raw water quality and public health. Cryptosporidiosis, a gastrointestinal zoonotic disease, causes diarrhoea in dairy and beef production systems worldwide. Infected calves shed Cryptosporidium spp. oocysts in faeces, posing risks of contaminating surface water sources. Understanding the dynamics of Cryptosporidium contamination is crucial for effective water quality management. This study investigated Cryptosporidium spp. prevalence in neonatal calves and its potential impact on water quality before abstr

Associations of water quality with cholera in case-control studies: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Cholera is a significant health risk for low- and middle-income countries (LMIC), and the threat of outbreaks is likely to increase due to climate change. To keep up to date with the link between water quality and cholera, we conducted a systematic review and meta-analysis to update a previous review while only focusing on water-related exposures. We searched Embase, Web of Science and PubMed for literature published between 2016 and 2022. Search terms were consistent with the previous review. Study quality was assessed using the Risk Of Bias In Non-randomized Studies - of Exposures (ROBINS-E)

Uneven consequences of global climate mitigation pathways on regional water quality in the 21st century.

Future socioeconomic climate pathways have regional water-quality consequences whose severity and equity have not yet been fully understood across geographic and economic spectra. We use a process-based, terrestrial-freshwater ecosystem model to project 21st-century river nitrogen loads under these pathways. We find that fertilizer usage is the primary determinant of future river nitrogen loads, changing precipitation and warming have limited impacts, and CO2 fertilization-induced vegetation growth enhancement leads to modest load reductions. Fertilizer applications to produce bioenergy in cli

Effect of climate change on the water quality of Mediterranean rivers and alternatives to improve its status.

Surface water (SW) quality is particularly vulnerable to increased concentrations of nutrients, and this issue may be exacerbated by climate change. Knowledge of the effects of temperature and rainfall on SW quality is required to take the necessary measures to achieve good SW status in the future. To address this, the aims of this study were threefold: (1) to assess how a changing climate may alter the nitrate, ammonium, phosphorus and biological oxygen demand status (BOD5) of SW; (2) assess the relationship between water quality and flow; and (3) simulate diffuse and point source pollution r

Water quality assessment and pollution source apportionment in a highly regulated river of Northeast China.

Dams and sluices break down the river continuum, alter the river hydrological regime, and intercept the migration processes of nutrients and pollutants. The regulation of dams and sluices will have great impacts on water quality characteristics in the river basin. In this study, variable fuzzy pattern recognition model (VFPR), principal component analysis/factor analysis (PCA/FA), and the absolute principal component score-multiple linear regression (APCS-MLR) were used to assess the water quality and identify the potential pollution sources in a highly regulated river of Northeast China. Deriving a water quality guideline for protection of aquatic communities exposed to triclosan in the Canadian environment.

Triclosan is an antibacterial and antifungal chemical used in a variety of consumer products, including soaps, detergents, moisturizers, and cosmetics. Aquatic ecosystems may be exposed to triclosan following the release of remaining residues in wastewater effluents and biosolids. In December 2017, Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) released a federal environmental quality guideline (FEQG) report that contained a federal water quality guideline (FWQG) for triclosan. This guideline will be used as an adjunct to the risk assessment and risk management of priority chemicals identified u
