Sensorimotor aspects of high-speed artificial gravity: I. Sensory conflict in vestibular adaptation.

Short-radius centrifugation offers a promising and affordable countermeasure to the adverse effects of prolonged weightlessness. However, head movements made in a fast rotating environment elicit Coriolis effects, which seriously compromise sensory and motor processes. We found that participants can adapt to these Coriolis effects when exposed intermittently to high rotation rates and, at the same time, can maintain their perceptual-motor coordination in stationary environments. In this paper, we explore the role of inter-sensory conflict in this adaptation process. Different measures (vertica…

Artificial gravity: head movements during short-radius centrifugation.

Short-radius centrifugation is a potential countermeasure to long-term weightlessness. Unfortunately, head movements in a rotating environment induce serious discomfort, non-compensatory vestibulo-ocular reflexes, and subjective illusions of body tilt. In two experiments we investigated the effects of pitch and yaw head movements in participants placed supine on a rotating bed with their head at the center of rotation, feet at the rim. The vast majority of participants experienced motion sickness, inappropriate vertical nystagmus and illusory tilt and roll as predicted by a semicircular canal …

Orientation illusions and heart-rate changes during short-radius centrifugation.

Intermittent short-radius centrifugation is a promising countermeasure against the adverse effects of prolonged weightlessness. To assess the feasibility of this countermeasure, we need to understand the disturbing sensory effects that accompany some movements carried out during rotation. We tested 20 subjects who executed yaw and pitch head movements while rotating at constant angular velocity. They were supine with their main body axis perpendicular to earth gravity. The head was placed at the centrifuge's axis of rotation. Head movements produced a transient elevation of heart-rate. All obs…

Canadian medical experiments on Shuttle flight 41-G.

During the 41-G mission, two payload specialist astronauts took part in six Canadian medical experiments designed to measure how the human nervous system adapts to weightlessness, and how this might contribute to space motion sickness. Similar tests conducted pre-flight provided base-line data, and post-flight experiments examined re-adaptation to the ground. No changes were detected in the vestibulo-ocular reflex during this 8-day mission. Pronounced proprioceptive illusions were experienced, especially immediately post-flight. Tactile acuity was normal in the fingers and toes, but the abilit…

Insights into the effect of microgravity on phytopathogens and plant-associated microbes.

With the evolving circumstances on Earth and the burgeoning scientific interest in space, space exploration is experiencing significant growth. As human presence in space increases, the necessity for cultivating fresh food becomes a critical consideration for astronauts' health and psychological well-being. Consequently, 'space farming' emerges as a vital area of research for the future. However, the conditions in space differ markedly from those on Earth, exposing plants and humans to various abiotic stressors, one of which is microgravity. Microgravity refers to the diminished gravitational

Carbon Dioxide as a Multisystem Threat in Long Duration Spaceflight.

Elevated partial pressure of carbon dioxide (Pco2) poses a persistent health challenge during spaceflight. Unlike Earth's environment, the International Space Station experiences Pco2 levels that often exceed terrestrial safety thresholds, creating unique physiological risks for astronauts. In microgravity, localized Pco2 "pockets" can form due to lack of convection, exacerbating hypercapnic symptoms such as headaches, visual disturbances, and cognitive impairments. Moreover, microgravity-induced cephalad fluid shifts amplify the impact of CO2-mediated cerebral vasodilation, contributing to el

Identification of gravity-responsive proteins in the femur of spaceflight mice using a quantitative proteomic approach.

Although the microgravity (μ-g) environment that astronauts encounter during spaceflight can cause severe acute bone loss, the molecular mechanism of this bone loss remains unclear. To investigate the gravity-response proteins involved in bone metabolism, it is important to comprehensively determine which proteins exhibit differential abundance associated with mechanical stimuli. However, comprehensive proteomic analysis using small bone samples is difficult because protein extraction in mineralized bone tissue is inefficient. Here, we established a high-sensitivity analysis system for mouse b

Combined effect of simulated microgravity and low-dose ionizing radiation on structure and antibiotic resistance of a synthetic community model of bacteria isolated from spacecraft assembly room.

Understanding the structural and antibiotic resistance changes of microbial communities in space environments is critical for identifying potential pathogens that may pose health risks to astronauts and for preventing and controlling microbial contamination. The research to date on microbes under simulated space factors has primarily been carried out on single bacterial species under the individual effects of microgravity or low-dose radiation. However, microgravity (MG) and low-dose ionizing radiation (LDIR) coexist in the actual spacecraft environment, and microorganisms coexist as communiti

Optic Disc Edema in Astronauts from a Choroidal Point of View.

INTRODUCTION: Optic disc edema has been well documented in astronauts both during and after long-duration spaceflight and is hypothesized to largely result from increased pressure within the orbital subarachnoid space brought about by a generalized rise in intracranial pressure or from sequestration of cerebrospinal fluid within the orbital subarachnoid space with locally elevated optic nerve sheath pressure. In addition, a recent prospective study documented substantial spaceflight-associated peripapillary choroidal thickening, which may be a contributing factor in spaceflight-associated neur

Hepatology in space: Effects of spaceflight and simulated microgravity on the liver.

Microgravity as experienced during spaceflight affects a number of physiological processes in various organs. However, effects on the liver have yet been poorly documented. Nevertheless, the liver is a metabolically highly active organ involved in carbohydrate metabolism, lipid metabolism and xenobiotic biotransformation. The present paper provides an overview of the effects of microgravity on the liver observed in experimental animals during actual spaceflight and upon simulation of microgravity on Earth. These include (i) induction of liver injury and inflammation associated with apoptosis a

The Effects of Long Duration Spaceflight on Sensorimotor Control and Cognition.

Astronauts returning from spaceflight typically show transient declines in mobility and balance. Other sensorimotor behaviors and cognitive function have not been investigated as much. Here, we tested whether spaceflight affects performance on various sensorimotor and cognitive tasks during and after missions to the International Space Station (ISS). We obtained mobility (Functional Mobility Test), balance (Sensory Organization Test-5), bimanual coordination (bimanual Purdue Pegboard), cognitive-motor dual-tasking and various other cognitive measures (Digit Symbol Substitution Test, Cube Rotat

[Muscle fiber atrophy].

Muscle fibers have been classified into two major forms of red (slow twitch) and white (fast twitch) muscles. The red muscle utilizes lipid as energy source through mitochondrial metabolism and function to sustain the position against gravity (sometimes called as antigravity muscle). Under microgravity the red muscle is selectively involved. In our unloading study by hindlimb suspension experiment on rats, the one of the representative red muscle of soleus muscle underwent rapid atrophy; they reduced their weights about 50% after 2 week-unloading. In addition, myofibrils were occasionally mark

Ultrasonographic evaluation of sinusitis during microgravity in a novel animal model.

OBJECTIVES: To develop an animal model of rhinosinusitis in microgravity, to characterize the behavior of intracavitary fluid in microgravity, and to assess the accuracy of ultrasonographic (US) diagnosis in microgravity. DESIGN: An animal model of acute sinusitis was developed in anesthetized swine by creating a window into a frontal sinus to allow unilateral catheter placement and injection of fluid. We performed US examinations in normal and microgravity environments on control and sinusitis conditions and recorded these for later interpretation. SETTING: Henry Ford Hospital and the Natio

Microgravity-induced modifications of the vestibuloocular reflex in Xenopus laevis tadpoles are related to development and the occurrence of tail lordosis.

UNLABELLED: During space flights, tadpoles of the clawed toad Xenopus laevis occasionally develop upward bended tails (tail lordosis). The tail lordosis disappears after re-entry to 1g within a couple of days. The mechanisms responsible for the induction of the tail lordosis are unknown; physical conditions such as weight de-loading or physiological factors such as decreased vestibular activity in microgravity might contribute. Microgravity (microg) also exerts significant effects on the roll-induced vestibuloocular reflex (rVOR). The rVOR was used to clarify whether tail lordosis is caused by

Multiscale Modeling and Systems Biology in Microgravity Investigations.

Spaceflight imposes a unique combination of environmental stressors including ionizing radiation, microgravity, and prolonged isolation that disrupt biological systems from the genome to the proteome. These stressors contribute to a range of health effects such as musculoskeletal degradation, neuroimmune dysfunction, and psychological challenges. Advances in countermeasure development, including biomedical devices and therapeutics, have already yielded terrestrial benefits for conditions like osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease. To systematically characterize spaceflight-induced biological

Simulated microgravity triggers a membrane adaptation to stress in E. coli REL606.

Investigating the evolution of Escherichia coli in microgravity offers valuable insights into microbial adaptation to extreme environments. Here the effects of simulated microgravity (SµG) on gene expression and genome evolution of E. coli REL606, a strain evolved terrestrially for 35 years, is explored. The transcriptomic changes for glucose-limited and glucose-replete conditions over 24 h illustrate that SµG increased the expression of genes involved in stress response, biofilm, and metabolism. A greater number of differentially expressed genes related to the general stress response (GSR) an

Artificial gravity: an effective countermeasure for microgravity-induced headward fluid shift?

Long-duration spaceflight is associated with pathophysiological changes in the intracranial compartment hypothetically linked to microgravity-induced headward fluid shift. This study aimed to determine whether daily artificial gravity (AG) sessions can mitigate these effects, supporting its application as a countermeasure to spaceflight. Twenty-four healthy adult volunteers (16 men) were exposed to 60 days of 6° head-down tilt bed rest (HDTBR) as a ground-based analog of chronic headward fluid shift. Subjects were divided equally into three groups: no AG (control), daily 30-min intermittent AG
