The effect of salicylate, a marRAB inducer, on the resistance to beta-lactams was characterized in an AmpC beta-lactamase hyperproducer Morganella morganii clinical isolate (the M1 strain). Many beta-lactam antimicrobials were developed between the 1960s and 1980s, with continuing development driven by the emergence of microbial resistance. Penems form a discrete class of beta-lactams that comprises structural hybrids of penicillins (penams) and cephalosporins (cephems). The chemistry and microbiology of the representative penems MEN 10700, ritipenem, CGP 31608, sulopenem, BRL 42715, and faropenem are reviewed. The in vitro activity of meropenem, a carbapenem antibiotic, combined with eight other beta-lactams against methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) was tested. The MICs of these antibiotics alone ranged from 12.5 to 1,600 micrograms/ml for the 25 clinical isolates of MRSA studied. All combinations with meropenem exhibited marked synergy as determined by the checkerboard method. BACKGROUND: Comprehensive analysis of all available data in spontaneous reports (SRs) can reveal previously unidentified medication errors (MEs).
METHODS: To detect MEs, we performed a retrospective analysis of SRs submitted to the Russian pharmacovigilance database in the period from January 01, 2012, to August 01, 2014. This study evaluated SRs of cases where beta-lactam antibiotics were the suspected drug.
