The relationship between temperature and hip and wrist fracture incidence.

INTRODUCTION: Predicting when fracture incidence will rise assists in healthcare planning and delivery of preventative strategies. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between temperature and the incidence of hip and wrist fractures. METHODS: Data for adults presenting to our unit with a hip or wrist fracture over a seven and eight-year period respectively were analysed. Incidence rates were calculated and compared with meteorological records. A Poisson regression model was used to quantify the relationship between temperature and fracture rate. RESULTS: During the respe

Evaluation of a novel high-capacity dry plasma biosampling-lateral flow device for the testing of traumatic brain injury protein biomarkers.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Current blood-based diagnostic tests for traumatic brain injury (TBI), such as those measuring UCH-L1 and GFAP, require venous whole blood or plasma samples collection and cold-chain handling. No FDA-cleared TBI test currently supports capillary blood or dried sample formats. We propose incorporating a novel dried plasma collection device into future TBI diagnostic workflows. This format is compatible with fingerstick sampling, simplifies storage and transport, reduces biosampling burdens, and preserves key TBI biomarker detectability. Our study evaluates this device's

Microsurgical replantation of the lip: a multi-institutional experience.

Traumatic amputation of the lip is a rare yet devastating event affecting both form and function. Considering the available methods for reconstruction, replantation may offer a reasonable solution. We sought to characterize the variables associated with lip replantation and to assess the outcome in a retrospective review of 13 lip replantations performed in 12 institutions utilizing a form database and clinical and photographic analysis. Lip replantation was successful in all 13 patients; partial flap loss occurred in one patient owing to iatrogenic injury. Follow-up averaged 3.1 years. Averag

Neuropathic pain is associated with abnormal sensations and/or pain induced by non-painful stimuli, i.e., allodynia causing burning or cold sensation, pinching of pins and needles like feeling, numbness, aching or itching. However, no suitable therapy exists to treat these pain syndromes. Our laboratory explored novel potential therapeutic strategies using a suitable composition of neurotrophic factors and active peptide fragments-Cerebrolysin (Ever Neuro Pharma, Austria) in alleviating neuropathic pain induced spinal cord pathology in a rat model. Neuropathic pain was produced by constriction

Bugged.

This was a great save. The crew could easily have missed the presentation of anaphylaxis and let the window for treatment with epinephrine slip away. This patient was in anaphylactic shock. There were no signs that supported a traumatic injury, and that, combined with diaphoresis, urticaria and tachycardic central pulse, contributed to the suspicion of anaphylaxis. Anaphylaxis is classified as distributive shock. This type of shock is caused by profound systemic vasodilation, and the heart is unable to increase output enough to maintain blood pressure. Other causes of distributive shock includ

Evidence for an involvement of the neutrophil integrin lymphocyte function-associated antigen-1 in early failure of heart transplants.

BACKGROUND: The adhesion of neutrophils to the coronary vascular wall contributes to reperfusion injury of cardiac allografts. This phenomenon involves interactions between neutrophil beta 2-integrins (CD11a/CD18 [lymphocyte function-associated antigen-1, or LFA-1], CD11b/CD18 [membrane attack complex-1, or MAC-1], and CD11c/CD18 [p150,95]) and their endothelial ligands. Whereas the roles of the common beta-chain (CD18) and of the alpha-subunit of MAC-1 (CD11b) have been studied extensively, the role of the alpha-subunit of LFA-1 (CD11a) remains less well defined. The objective of this study,

Significant Chondrocyte Viability Is Present in Acetabular Chondral Flaps Associated With Femoroacetabular Impingement.

BACKGROUND: Patients presenting with cam deformity of the femoral head and neck sustain repeated trauma to the articular cartilage of the superior acetabulum, with chondral delamination injuries found during hip arthroscopy. Two previous studies reveal conflicting chondrocyte viability data in these traumatic cartilage injuries. The full-thickness nature of flaps may suggest that chondrocytes residing in the cartilage flap matrix in the joint environment would remain viable despite shear trauma. Hypothesis/Purpose: The purpose of this study is to determine the in vivo tissue viability of aceta

Transient fibrosis resolves via fibroblast inactivation in the regenerating zebrafish heart.

In the zebrafish (Danio rerio), regeneration and fibrosis after cardiac injury are not mutually exclusive responses. Upon cardiac cryoinjury, collagen and other extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins accumulate at the injury site. However, in contrast to the situation in mammals, fibrosis is transient in zebrafish and its regression is concomitant with regrowth of the myocardial wall. Little is known about the cells producing this fibrotic tissue or how it resolves. Using novel genetic tools to mark periostin b- and collagen 1alpha2 (col1a2)-expressing cells in combination with transcriptome anal

Immediate expression of c-fos and c-jun mRNA in a model of intestinal autotransplantation and ischemia-reperfusion in situ.

OBJECTIVE: Intestinal ischemia-reperfusion injury occurs in several clinical conditions and after intestinal transplantation. The aim of the present study was to investigate the phenomena of apoptosis and cell proliferation in a previously described intestinal ischemia-reperfusion injury autograft model using immunohistochemical markers. The molecular mechanisms involved in ischemia-reperfusion injury repair were also investigated by measuring the expression of the early activation genes c-fos and c-jun, which induce apoptosis and cell proliferation. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty adult male W

Catecholamines reduce dose-dependent oedema formation and inflammatory reaction in an isolated rat lung model.

AIM: Since we detected that donor dopamine pre-treatment ameliorates lung function after hypothermia and ischaemia/reperfusion in an isolated rat lung model we studied, whether other catecholamines have beneficial effects on lungs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Rats were treated with noradrenaline, adrenaline or dobutamine in different doses. Thereafter lungs were explanted, flushed with Perfadex® solution and stored at 4°C for different time periods. Oedema production was measured and inflammatory mediators were analysed after reperfusion and ventilation. RESULTS: Low-dose noradrenaline or dobutam

Impairment of mitochondrial oxidative phosphorylation in rat fatty liver exposed to preservation-reperfusion injury.

BACKGROUND/AIMS: As the impairment of the cellular energy metabolism contributes to the failure of fatty liver grafts after transplantation, we aimed to determine whether steatosis affects the oxidative phosphorylation activity during preservation. METHODS: Rat normal and fatty livers were preserved for 18 h and then reperfused with warm oxygenated solution. The oxidative phosphorylation, the F(0)F(1)-ATPase and the Complex I activities were assessed in isolated mitochondria before and after preservation, and during reperfusion. The ALT release and portal pressure were monitored during reperf

Is warm or cold Calafiore blood cardioplegia better? Hemodynamic, metabolic, and electron microscopic differences.

BACKGROUND: Controversy exists as to whether warm or cold Calafiore blood cardioplegia (BCP) is better for cardiac preservation. Therefore, we compared hemodynamic performance, myocardial metabolism, and ultrastructural preservation in rat hearts after application of cold or warm BCP. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The hearts of 24 male Wistar rats were excised and inserted into a blood perfused isolated heart apparatus, and after a stabilization period of 30 minutes, either cold (4°C) or warm (36°C) Calafiore BCP was administered during an aortic clamping time of 90 minutes (12 rats each). Effects of hypothermic oxygenated machine perfusion on bile composition after liver transplantation - Findings from a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: In liver transplantation, bile acid (BA) toxicity contributes to injury of both hepatocytes and cholangiocytes. While hypothermic oxygenated machine perfusion (HOPE) reduces ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI) and improves clinical outcomes, its impact on bile composition remains unclear because of the lack of bile samples available after LT. METHODS: Bile, blood, and liver tissue were collected within a multicentric randomized controlled trial (NCT03124641), from 26 patients receiving extended criteria donation (ECD) allografts from donors after brain death (DBD). Fourteen d

Persistent Vagal Activation Caused by a Large Mesenteric Hematoma After Blunt Abdominal Trauma: A Case Report.

In patients with trauma, decreased circulating blood volume and pain increase sympathetic nerve activation, which increases the heart rate (HR) and vasoconstriction. When this compensatory mechanism is disrupted, the effects of trauma are more severe. Stimulation via the afferent vagal nerves from the gastrointestinal tract causes vagal activation, inducing a cardioinhibitory response that sometimes causes shock and bradycardia. A 51-year-old man sustained an abdominal injury while playing baseball. His blood pressure was normal; however, examination revealed persistent sinus bradycardia (HR:
