The Cyprus strain of bluetongue virus was successfully transmitted through six passages and the Station strain through one passage in calves. Although the animals developed no visible evidence of infection, viremia as shown by both passage and fluorescent antibody examination of infected foetal bovine kidney culture, and by serological conversion was nevertheless demonstrated. One hundred and seventyone antenatal patients were examined for the presence of ;large colony' mycoplasmas in the vagina, and for complement-fixing antibody to Mycoplasma hominis. In 25 patients the findings before and after delivery were compared. In patients from whom M. hominis was grown, antibody was twice as common after delivery, and the development of antibody was sometimes associated with pyrexia and signs of genital tract infection.

INTRODUCTION: Brucellosis is a globally significant zoonotic disease, caused by Brucella spp., with wildlife reservoirs such as wild boars posing a potential threat to brucellosis-free livestock populations and public health. The serum of patients with pigeon breeder's lung (PBL) contains IgG-class antibodies against pigeon serum proteins. These antibodies cross-react strongly with the sera of other avian species. Cross-reactivity, as demonstrated by precipitation, complement fixation, haemagglutination and microELISA, is also exhibited with the water-soluble proteins in hen's egg yolk and egg white. Acute coccidioidal pleural effusions were studied in 28 patients. Coccidioidal pleural effusion appeared to be secondary to direct spread of contigous parenchymal infection, rather than to hematogenous dissemination, in more than 90 per cent of these patients. The authors conducted a statistical correlation of frequencies of neurological and ophthalmological pathology in a group of patients with different disorders of the nervous system, where 556 had positive and 788 negative seroallergical reactions to toxoplasmosis. It was possible to establish that most of the neurological and ophthalmological symptoms of toxoplasmosis were significantly more frequent in individuals of the first group, except patients with disseminated sclerosis, myopathy and myasthenia.

Formalin-killed phase I C. burneti organisms containing the protective antigenic component were used for vaccination of heifers against Q fever. None of the vaccinated heifers contracted Q fever, whereas 8 out of 12 (66.6%) control, non-vaccinated heifers became infected when exposed to infection for 3 months in the breed of naturally infected dairy cows.
