Neural correlates of dual-task performance after minimizing task-preparation.

Previous dual-task neuroimaging studies have not discriminated between brain regions involved in preparing to make more than one response from those involved in the management and execution of two tasks. To isolate the effects of dual-task processing while minimizing effects related to task-preparatory processes, we employed a blocked event-related design in which single trials and dual trials were randomly and unpredictably intermixed for one block (mixed block) and presented in isolation of one another during other blocks (pure blocks). Any differences between dual-task and single-task trial

More learned irrelevance than perseveration errors in rule shifting in healthy subjects.

The present experiments examined the extent to which two possible sources of error affect healthy subjects' performance in a rule-shift task. All 115 participants first received a discrimination learning task, in which a pair of different visual stimuli was presented on each trial, one of which had to be identified as 'correct.' Each stimulus varied in two dimensions: a task-relevant and a task-irrelevant dimension. Feedback on correctness was given after each choice. After eight successive correct choices, the nature of the task-relevant dimension changed: the post-shift learning phase. Two t

Disrupted sensory gating in pathological gambling.

BACKGROUND: Some neurochemical evidence as well as recent studies on molecular genetics suggest that pathologic gambling may be related to dysregulated dopamine neurotransmission. METHODS: The current study examined sensory (motor) gating in pathologic gamblers as a putative measure of endogenous brain dopamine activity with prepulse inhibition of the acoustic startle eye-blink response and the auditory P300 event-related potential. Seventeen pathologic gamblers and 21 age- and gender-matched healthy control subjects were assessed. Both prepulse inhibition measures were recorded under passive

MK-801 prevents brain lesions and delayed-nonmatching-to-sample deficits produced by pyrithiamine-induced encephalopathy in rats.

Rats were trained on a spatial delayed-nonmatching-to-sample (DNMTS) task and assigned by block randomization to one of four treatments: pyrithiamine-induced thiamine deficiency (PTD), PTD with administration of MK-801 after 12 days, control with MK-801 treatment, and control without MK-801. After 15 days of treatment followed by 21 days of recovery, the PTD rats showed significant deficits for DNMTS accuracy at retention intervals (RI) that ranged from 3.0 s to 15.0 s, the RIs that produced 75% accuracy on DNMTS in staircase training, and the rate at which a novel radial arm maze task was lea

A role of amygdala in visual perception and cognition in macaque monkeys (Macaca fuscata and Macaca mulatta).

To elucidate the role of the amygdala in visual perception and cognition, the effects of ablations of the amygdala and inferotemporal cortex on several visual tasks were compared with each other, and also the distribution patterns of the projections between them were investigated. The findings indicate that the inferotemporal cortex plays a critical role in visual perception, cognition and memory, whereas the amygdala is involved fundamentally in controlling emotional and motivational behavior. However, the amygdala is concerned with vision in the following ways: It receives neutral visual inf

Complex Regional Pain Syndrome.

Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS) is a heterogeneous disorder that falls in the spectrum of neuropathic pain disorders. It is maintained by abnormalities throughout the neuraxis (the peripheral, autonomic, and central nervous systems). The pathophysiology of CRPS is not fully known. There are no scientifically well-established treatments. The diagnostic criteria for CRPS at this time are purely clinical, and the use of diagnostic tests has not been demonstrated. The most appropriate management of CRPS uses a multidisciplinary approach, with the inclusion of medical and psychologic interven

Transient Disruption of the Inferior Parietal Lobule Impairs the Ability to Attribute Intention to Action.

Although it is well established that fronto-parietal regions are active during action observation, whether they play a causal role in the ability to infer others' intentions from visual kinematics remains undetermined. In the experiments reported here, we combined offline continuous theta burst stimulation (cTBS) with computational modeling to reveal and causally probe single-trial computations in the inferior parietal lobule (IPL) and inferior frontal gyrus (IFG). Participants received cTBS over the left anterior IPL and the left IFG pars orbitalis in separate sessions before completing an in

Fgf9 Y162C Mutation Alters Information Processing and Social Memory in Mice.

In neuropsychiatric diseases, such as major depression and anxiety, pathogenic vulnerability is partially dictated by a genetic predisposition. The search continues to define this genetic susceptibility and establish new genetic elements as potential therapeutic targets. The fibroblast growth factors (FGFs) could be interesting in this regard. This family of signaling molecules plays important roles in development while also functioning within the adult. This includes effects on aspects of brain function such as neurogenesis and synapse formation. Of this family, Fgf9 is expressed in the adult

Task influences pattern discriminability for faces and bodies in ventral occipitotemporal cortex.

Our prior research showed that faces and bodies activate overlapping regions of the ventral occipitotemporal cortex (VOTC). However, faces and bodies were nonetheless discriminable in these same overlapping regions when their spatial patterns of activity were classified using multivoxel pattern analysis (MVPA). Here we investigated whether these spatial patterns and their time courses were influenced by different categorization tasks. Participants viewed pictures of faces or headless bodies depicting a happy or fearful emotion. In one task, they categorized the picture as a face or a body rega

Precision and neuronal dynamics in the human posterior parietal cortex during evidence accumulation.

Primate studies show slow ramping activity in posterior parietal cortex (PPC) neurons during perceptual decision-making. These findings have inspired a rich theoretical literature to account for this activity. These accounts are largely unrelated to Bayesian theories of perception and predictive coding, a related formulation of perceptual inference in the cortical hierarchy. Here, we tested a key prediction of such hierarchical inference, namely that the estimated precision (reliability) of information ascending the cortical hierarchy plays a key role in determining both the speed of decision-

Invigoration of reward seeking by cue and proximity encoding in the nucleus accumbens.

A key function of the nucleus accumbens is to promote vigorous reward seeking, but the corresponding neural mechanism has not been identified despite many years of research. Here, we study cued flexible approach behavior, a form of reward seeking that strongly depends on the accumbens, and we describe a robust, single-cell neural correlate of behavioral vigor in the excitatory response of accumbens neurons to reward-predictive cues. Well before locomotion begins, this cue-evoked excitation predicts both the movement initiation latency and the speed of subsequent flexible approach responses, bu

Electrophysiological evidence for ventral stream deficits in schizophrenia patients.

Schizophrenic patients suffer from many deficits including visual, attentional, and cognitive ones. Visual deficits are of particular interest because they are at the fore-end of information processing and can provide clear examples of interactions between sensory, perceptual, and higher cognitive functions. Visual deficits in schizophrenic patients are often attributed to impairments in the dorsal (where) rather than the ventral (what) stream of visual processing. We used a visual-masking paradigm in which patients and matched controls discriminated small vernier offsets. We analyzed the evok

Subtypes of developmental dyslexia: testing the predictions of the dual-route and connectionist frameworks.

We investigated the phonological and surface subtypes of developmental dyslexia in light of competing predictions made by two computational models of single word reading, the Dual-Route Cascaded Model (DRC; Coltheart, Rastle, Perry, Langdon, & Ziegler, 2001) and Harm and Seidenberg's connectionist model (HS model; Harm & Seidenberg, 1999). The regression-outlier procedure was applied to a large sample to identify children with disproportionately poor phonological coding skills (phonological dyslexia) or disproportionately poor orthographic coding skills (surface dyslexia). Consistent with the

Tactile roughness discrimination of the finger pad relies primarily on vibration sensitive afferents not necessarily located in the hand.

This study aims to investigate the relative contribution of remote mechanoreceptors to perception of roughness and spatial acuity. We examined two unilateral pathological conditions affecting differently innervation of the index finger: unilateral carpal tunnel syndrome (n=12) and surgically repaired complete traumatic median nerve section at the wrist following surgical repair (n=4). We employed a control condition consisting of ring-block anesthesia of the entire index in 10 healthy subjects to model pathological denervation of the fingertip. Spatial acuity and the ability to discern roughne

Neither bipolar nor obsessive-compulsive disorder: compulsive buyers are impulsive acquirers.

INTRODUCTION: Compulsive buying (CB) is currently classified as an impulse control disorder (ICD) not otherwise classified. Compulsive buying prevalence is estimated at around 5% of the general population. There is controversy about whether CB should be classified as an ICD, a subsyndromal bipolar disorder (BD), or an obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) akin to a hoarding syndrome. To further investigate the appropriate classification of CB, we compared patients with CB, BD, and OCD for impulsivity, affective instability, hoarding, and other OCD symptoms. METHOD: Eighty outpatients (24 CB, 21

Mutation of the dyslexia-associated gene Dcdc2 impairs LTM and visuo-spatial performance in mice.

Developmental reading disorder (RD) affects 5-10% of school aged children, with a heritability of approximately 60%. Genetic association studies have identified several candidate RD susceptibility genes, including DCDC2; however, a direct connection between the function of these genes and cognitive or learning impairments remains unclear. Variants in DCDC2, a member of the doublecortin family of genes, have been associated in humans with RD and ADHD and Dcdc2 may play a role in neuronal migration in rats. In this study, we examined the effect of Dcdc2 mutation on cognitive abilities in mice us

Impaired delayed but preserved immediate grasping in a neglect patient with parieto-occipital lesions.

Patients with optic ataxia, a deficit in visually guided action, paradoxically improve when pantomiming an action towards memorized stimuli. Visual form agnosic patient D.F. shows the exact opposite pattern of results: although being able to grasp objects in real-time she loses grip scaling when grasping an object from memory. Here we explored the dissociation between immediate and delayed grasping in a patient (F.S.) who after a parietal-occipital stroke presented with severe left visual neglect, a loss of awareness of the contralesional side of space. Although F.S. had preserved grip scaling

Fear-object perception: does it entail the involuntary capture of attention?

The idea that fearful stimuli are automatically detected i.e. without attention, is challenged by the hypothesis that detection of threatening stimuli is facilitated by the involuntary, stimulus-driven recruitment of attentional resources. In order to clarify this question, we studied spiders detection in arachnophobic individuals by means of an iconic version of the Attentional Blink Task (AB). The experiment consisted of two tasks: 1) Probe detection within a rapid sequence of distractors, including a Critical Distractor (CD); 2) Probe detection and identification of the CD (Target). In this
