Frailty and sarcopenia within the earliest national Dutch childhood cancer survivor cohort (DCCSS-LATER): a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Childhood cancer survivors appear to be at increased risk of frailty and sarcopenia, but evidence on the occurrence of and high- … al density (Z score ≤-1 and >-2, OR 1·80 [95% CI 1·31-2·47]; Z score ≤-2, OR 3·37 [2·20-5·15]), and folic acid deficiency (OR 1·87 [1·31-2·68]) were considered significant. For frailty, associated factors included age at diagnosis between 10-18 years (OR 1·94 [95% CI 1·19-3·16]), underweight (OR 3·09 [1·42-6·69]), cranial irradiation (OR 2·65 [1·59-4·34]), total body i …

Ischemic Stroke and Dietary Vitamin B12 Deficiency in Old-Aged Females: Impaired Motor Function, Increased Ischemic Damage Size, and Changed Metabolite Profiles in Brain and Cecum Tissue.

A vitamin B12 deficiency (vit. B12 def.) is common in the elderly, because of changes in metabolism. Clinical studies have reported that a vit. B12 def. results in worse outcome after stroke, and the mechanisms through which a vit. B12 def. changes the brain requires further investigation. This study investigated the role of vit. B12 def. on stroke outcome and mechanisms using aged female mice. Eighteen-month-old females were put on a control or vit. B12 def. diet for 4 weeks, after which an ischemic stroke was induced in the sensorimotor cortex. After damage, motor function was measured, the

Severe leukoencephalopathy with cortical involvement and peripheral neuropathy due to FOLR1 deficiency.

Cerebral folate deficiency due to folate receptor 1 gene (FOLR1) mutations is an autosomal recessive disorder resulting from a brain-specific folate transport defect. It is characterized by late infantile onset, severe psychomotor regression, epilepsy, and leukodystrophy. We describe a consanguineous girl exhibiting severe developmental regression, intractable epilepsy, polyneuropathy, and profound hypomyelination with cortical involvement. Magnetic resonance imaging showed cortical disturbances in addition to profound hypomyelination and cerebellar atrophy. Nerve conduction studies revealed b

[An uncommon etiology of anemia: copper deficiency].

A 58-year-old patient, without any notable medical history, except for alcoholism and treated hypertension, developed anemia and leukopenia with macrocytosis. Folate deficiency was diagnosed and subsequently treated. Despite folate supplementation, the hematological parameters did not normalize. Further diagnosis investigations were led to search for uncommon etiologies of anemia and leukoneutropenia. We diagnosed severe copper deficiency on the basis of decreased plasma levels of copper and ceruloplasmin. Copper supplementation improved blood counts within three months. This case illustrates

Cough mixture abuse and rhabdomyolysis.

Cough mixture abuse is an emerging problem among young men in Oriental countries. Its metabolic consequences have been recognised only recently. Such abusers can develop severe folate deficiency, which may be related to peripheral and central nervous system defects. We report three cough mixture abusers with rhabdomyolysis. All suffered from folate deficiencies and also had a history of anti-psychotic drug use. This represents one more life-threatening side-effect from cough mixture abuse.

The role of B vitamins in preventing and treating cognitive impairment and decline.

Many epidemiologic studies have considered whether markers of B-vitamin status are associated with cognitive function and cognitive decline. This avenue of research was sparked by the homocysteine (Hcy) theory of cardiovascular disease, which was extended to Alzheimer's disease when a link between vascular dementia and Alzheimer's disease was discovered. Hcy could cause cognitive impairment via direct neurotoxicity. However, decreased remethylation of Hcy to methionine might also compromise cognitive function by means other than mere Hcy lowering. Folate and vitamin B-12 participate in Hcy rem

[Mild hyperhomocysteinemia, low folate levels and prognosis of acute coronary syndrome without ST elevation].

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: The influence of homocysteine metabolism on the prognosis of acute coronary syndrome without ST elevation is controversial. PATIENTS AND METHOD: Prospective study of 109 patients admitted because of acute coronary syndrome without ST elevation. Basal plasmatic levels of homocysteine and folates were obtained. Clinical features and survival data on follow-up were registered. RESULTS: Both two years-free-of-events and total survival were lower in patients with low folate levels (36.5% vs 72.5%, p = 0.02; 48% vs 94%, p < .001). Patients with high homocysteine levels ha

Haematological and tissue abnormalities in chicks caused by acute and subclinical folate deficiency.

1. Haematological, histological and ultrastructural findings in young chicks fed on a purified diet severely deficient in folate are reported. 2. Growth of the birds was greatly depressed and they had a macrocytic anaemia. Other haematological changes included abnormal nuclear formations in erythrocytes, numerous mitoses and hypersegmented granulocytes. 3. Megaloblasts were observed in bone marrow and their fine structure is described for the first time in an avian species. 4. Morphological changes occurred also in the liver. The parenchyma had damaged sinusoidal endothelium, inflammatory cell

Vitamin and Mineral Supplementation During Pregnancy on Maternal, Birth, Child Health and Development Outcomes in Low- and Middle-Income Countries: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis.

Almost two billion people are deficient in key vitamins and minerals, mostly women and children in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Deficiencies worsen during pregnancy due to increased energy and nutritional demands, causing adverse outcomes in mother and child, but could be mitigated by interventions like micronutrient supplementation. To our knowledge, this is the first systematic review that aimed to compile evidence from both efficacy and effectiveness trials, evaluating different supplementation interventions on maternal, birth, child health, and developmental outcomes. We evalu

Severe myelomeningocele in the fourth pregnancy of a 29-year-old woman: a case report.

Neural tube defects represent a heterogeneous and complex group of congenital abnormalities affecting the central nervous system. These defects occur during embryogenesis as a result of the failure of the neural tube to close completely. A highly clinically significant form is myelomeningocele, often referred to as open spina bifida or spina bifida aperta. Delayed diagnosis presents considerable challenges, and folate deficiency is an important risk factor. This case reports a severe myelomeningocele located in the lumbosacral region of a female neonate, identified at 28-29 weeks' gestation du

Anencephaly and palatoschisis in 2 newborn puppies.

Anencephaly is a congenital condition characterized by incomplete brain development and malformations of cranial bones and cerebral hemispheres. Such defects arise from improper neural tube closure during embryogenesis. Although well documented in humans, they are infrequently reported in veterinary medicine. The etiology of anencephaly in dogs is not fully understood, but a strong genetic predisposition has been observed, particularly among brachycephalic breeds. In addition, studies in humans have implicated factors such as folic acid deficiency, hypervitaminosis A, and exposure to teratogen…

Characterization of acquired anemia in children by iron metabolism parameters.

Inflammatory states are associated with anemia of chronic disease and acute infection. Hepcidin, a regulator of iron metabolism, is involved in iron pathophysiology during inflammation. We investigated biochemical characteristics in children with anemia from different causes. Four patient groups (n = 38; mean age: 12.44 ± 4.35 years) were studied: (1) inflammatory bowel disease (IBD, 10 patients); (2) iron deficiency anemia (IDA, 12); (3) celiac disease (CD, 8); (4) acute infection (AI, 8). Laboratory measurements were evaluated at diagnosis: blood count, serum iron, transferrin, ferritin, vit

Association of Anemia With Epilepsy and Antiepileptic Drugs.

Epilepsy is a disorder that causes unprovoked seizures regularly. It affects between 1% and 3% of the population. After the first seizure, the chances of having another one are almost 40%-52%. The etiology of febrile seizures in children with sickle cell disease is still unknown. In some groups, iron deficiency anemia has been linked to an increased risk of seizures. Although the reason and process are uncertain, some people believe that taking iron supplements can help prevent seizures. This literature covers haptene, non-haptene immune-related hemolysis, and oxidative processes activated by

Compliance to iron-folic-acid supplementation and associated factors among pregnant women: A cross-sectional survey in a district of West Bengal, India.

BACKGROUND: Iron-deficiency anemia is considered to be a major health problem in India. This can complicate a normal pregnancy resulting in poor maternal and fetal outcomes. Iron-folic-acid (IFA) supplementation to antenatal and postnatal mothers given through the National Health Mission (NHM) serves as a major tool to combat this problem. AIM: This study aimed to assess compliance to IFA supplement and associated factors among antenatal mothers in a district of West Bengal, India. METHODS: A cross-sectional observational study was conducted among 208 pregnant mothers attending different sub
