The multi-level outcome study of psychoanalysis for chronically depressed patients with early trauma (MODE): rationale and design of an international multicenter randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Whether and how psychotherapies change brain structure and function is unknown. Its study is of great importance for contemporary psychotherapy, as it may lead to discovery of neurobiological mechanisms that predict and mediate lasting changes in psychotherapy, particularly in severely mentally ill patients, such as those with chronic depression. Previous studies have shown that psychoanalytic psychotherapies produce robust and enduring improvements in not only symptom severity but also personality organization in patients who have chronic depression and early life trauma, especial

How COVID-19 pandemic period influences on the selected mental health parameters of Polish respondents?

INTRODUCTION: There are many different articles about COVID-19 pandemic period and its influence on people and their behavior. Nevertheless, there is little research on the slightly later period of the pandemic, that is, the time when specific adaptation mechanisms in society should start to take place. METHODS: Our research was conducted by means of an online survey. Four hundred and eighty five adults participated, including 349 (71.96%) women and 136 (28.04%) men. The Buss-Perry aggression scale, Alcohol Use Disorders Identification Test and Generalized Anxiety Disorder 7 scale were used.

Stress-induced symptom exacerbation: Stress increases voiding frequency, somatic sensitivity, and urinary bladder NGF and BDNF expression in mice with subthreshold cyclophosphamide (CYP).

Symptom exacerbation due to stress is prevalent in many disease states, including functional disorders of the urinary bladder (e.g., overactive bladder (OAB), interstitial cystitis/bladder pain syndrome (IC/BPS)); however, the mechanisms underlying the effects of stress on micturition reflex function are unclear. In this study we designed and evaluated a stress-induced symptom exacerbation (SISE) mouse model that demonstrates increased urinary frequency and somatic (pelvic and hindpaw) sensitivity. Cyclophosphamide (CYP) (35 mg/kg; i.p., every 48 hours for a total of 4 doses) or 7 days of repe

Chronic pain after spine surgery: Insights into pathogenesis, new treatment, and preventive therapy.

UNLABELLED: Chronic pain after spine surgery (CPSS) is often characterized by intractable low back pain and/or radiating leg pain, and has been reported in 8-40% of patients that received lumbar spine surgery. We conducted a literature search of PubMed, MEDLINE/OVID with a focus on studies about the etiology and treatments of CPSS and low back pain. Our aim was to provide a narrative review that would help us better understand the pathogenesis and current treatment options for CPSS. This knowledge will aid in the development of optimal strategies for managing postoperative pain symptoms and po

Weight change-related factors during the COVID-19 pandemic: a population-based cross-sectional study using social cognitive theory.

BACKGROUND: Published studies during the Coronavirus-19 (COVID-19) pandemic have focused on eating and exercise behaviors and failed to portray a comprehensive understanding of the factors associated with weight change in a setting of a behavioral change framework. This study explores factors associated with weight change during the COVID-19 pandemic among Lebanese residents using the Social Cognitive Theory (SCT) framework, integrating behavioral, environmental, and cognitive factors. MATERIALS & METHODS: This study uses a cross-sectional design using an anonymous online survey. Participants

Early factors associated with risk of developmental coordination disorder in very preterm children: A prospective area-based cohort study in Italy.

BACKGROUND: Developmental coordination disorder (DCD) is a motor disorder of unknown aetiology that may have long-term consequences on daily activities, and psychological and physical health. Studies investigating risk factors for DCD have so far provided inconsistent results. OBJECTIVES: To assess, using a parent-report screening tool, risk of DCD in school-age very preterm children born in Italy, and investigate the associated early biomedical and sociodemographic factors. METHODS: A prospective area-based cohort (804 children, response rate 73.4%) was assessed at 8-11 years of age in thre

Vulnerable Elder Protection Team: Initial experience of an emergency department-based interdisciplinary elder abuse program.

BACKGROUND: An emergency department (ED) visit provides a unique opportunity to identify elder abuse and initiate intervention, but emergency providers rarely do. To address this, we developed the Vulnerable Elder Protection Team (VEPT), an ED-based interdisciplinary consultation service. We describe our initial experience in the first two years after the program launch. METHODS: We launched VEPT in a large, urban, academic ED/hospital. From 4/3/17 to 4/2/19, we tracked VEPT activations, including patient characteristics, assessment, and interventions. We compared VEPT activations to frequenc

Does social isolation, social support or loneliness influence health or well-being after a cardiovascular disease event? A narrative thematic systematic review.

Identification of factors which influence health after a cardiovascular disease (CVD) event will assist with reducing the high health and economic burden of CVD. We undertook a systematic review to investigate the association between social health (lower social isolation, higher social support and lower loneliness) and health and well-being after a CVD event among people living in Australia and New Zealand. Four electronic databases were systematically searched until June 2020. Two reviewers undertook title/abstract screen. One reviewer undertook full-text screen and data extraction. A second

Effects of Rome IV Definitions of Functional Dyspepsia Subgroups in Secondary Care.

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Functional dyspepsia (FD) is subdivided into postprandial distress syndrome (PDS) and epigastric pain syndrome (EPS) according to the Rome III consensus. In clinical practice, there is a major overlap between these subgroups. The Rome IV criteria included postprandially occurring symptoms in the PDS subgroup. We aimed to analyze the effects of the Rome IV criteria, compared with Rome III, on FD subgroups in patients recruited from secondary care. METHODS: Patients with FD (n = 224; mean age, 43 ± 1 y; 77% women) were recruited from secondary-care units in Belgium and filled

What's past is prologue: Recalled parenting styles are associated with childhood cancer survivors' mental health outcomes more than 25 years after diagnosis.

BACKGROUND: With the increased survival rates of childhood cancer, long-term survivors' well-being over the life span has come into focus. A better understanding of the determinants of childhood cancer survivors' (CCS) mental health outcomes contributes to the identification of vulnerable individuals as well as to the development of evidence-based prevention and intervention efforts. It has been noted that psychosocial factors such as parental rearing behavior shape individual differences in mental health. There is also evidence that parents show altered parenting behavior in the face of child

Differentiating psychogenic nonepileptic from epileptic seizures: A mixed-methods, content analysis study.

BACKGROUND: Identification of clinical features that might distinguish psychogenic nonepileptic seizures (PNES) from epileptic seizures (ES) is of value for diagnosis, management, and understanding of both conditions. Previous studies have shown that patients' descriptions of their seizures reflect differences in content and delivery. We aimed to compare verbal descriptions of PNES and ES using a mixed-methods approach. METHODS: We analyzed data from semi-structured interviews in which patients with video-electroencephalography (EEG)-confirmed ES (n = 30) or PNES (n = 10) described their seiz

End of life care practice and symptom management outcomes of nursing home residents with dementia: secondary analyses of IQUARE trial.

PURPOSE: End-of-life care is a central issue in nursing homes. Poor care outcomes have been reported, especially among residents with dementia. Our aim was two-fold: to assess whether the diagnosis of dementia was associated with specific patterns of care and symptom management for residents with dementia during the last 6 months of life, and to compare these patterns of care between residents with dementia who died within 6 months and those who survived longer. METHODS: Secondary prospective analyses of the IQUARE trial (trial registration number NCT01703689). 175 nursing homes in South West

Measuring Female Gaming: Gamer Profile, Predictors, Prevalence, and Characteristics From Psychological and Gender Perspectives.

Research investigating female gaming is relatively scarce, and past research has demonstrated that men are more likely to be problematic gamers. Few studies have focused on female gamers in community samples, and those that have been published have mainly collected qualitative data in Europe. There is case study evidence suggesting clinicians are increasingly treating problem female gamers. The aim of this study is threefold: (i) to establish an international female gamer profile, (ii) to determine predictors associated with perceived internet gaming disorder (IGD), and (iii) to identify those

Young adults' perspectives on health-related quality of life after paediatric traumatic brain injury: A prospective cohort study.

BACKGROUND: Quality of life (QoL) is commonly affected in children and families living with traumatic brain injury (TBI). Despite the established link between childhood TBI and reduced health-related QoL (HRQoL), there is a dearth of longitudinal, prospective research to determine the prevalence and predictors of impaired HRQoL in the very long term post-injury. OBJECTIVES: We evaluated HRQoL in young adult survivors of paediatric TBI at 15 years post-injury. We aimed to identify the prevalence of impaired HRQoL and the respective contribution of pre-injury, environmental, injury-related, cog
