T2-weighted IDEAL fast spin echo imaging of the brachial plexus: comparison with STIR.

BACKGROUND: Short TI inversion-recovery (STIR) imaging is widely used, but its signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) is relatively low. Iterative decomposition of water and fat with echo asymmetric and least-squares estimation (IDEAL) imaging has demonstrated promising results in several areas. PURPOSE: To compare T2-weighted fast spin-echo IDEAL (T2W IDEAL-FSE) with STIR to determine which sequence is superior to image the brachial plexus. MATERIAL AND METHODS: The brachial plexus was imaged in 18 patients and six volunteers. The patients' diseases comprised of: suspected chronic inflammatory demyeli

Automatic non-rigid temporal alignment of intravascular ultrasound sequences: method and quantitative validation.

Clinical studies on atherosclerosis regression/progression performed by intravascular ultrasound analysis would benefit from accurate alignment of sequences of the same patient before and after clinical interventions and at follow-up. In this article, a methodology for automatic alignment of intravascular ultrasound sequences based on the dynamic time warping technique is proposed. The non-rigid alignment is adapted to the specific task by applying it to multidimensional signals describing the morphologic content of the vessel. Moreover, dynamic time warping is embedded into a framework compri

Grey matter abnormalities in untreated hyperthyroidism: a voxel-based morphometry study using the DARTEL approach.

OBJECTIVE: Hyperthyroidism is frequently associated with pronounced neuropsychiatric symptoms such as impulsiveness, irritability, poor concentration, and memory impairments. Functional neuroimaging has revealed changes in cerebral metabolism in hyperthyroidism, but regional changes in cortical morphology associated with specific neurological deficits have not been studied so far. To investigate the pathophysiology underlying hyperthyroid-associated neural dysfunction, we compared grey matter volume (GMV) between adult hyperthyroid patients and matched healthy controls using voxel-based morpho

Discriminating schizophrenia and bipolar disorder by fusing fMRI and DTI in a multimodal CCA+ joint ICA model.

Diverse structural and functional brain alterations have been identified in both schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, but with variable replicability, significant overlap and often in limited number of subjects. In this paper, we aimed to clarify differences between bipolar disorder and schizophrenia by combining fMRI (collected during an auditory oddball task) and diffusion tensor imaging (DTI) data. We proposed a fusion method, "multimodal CCA+ joint ICA", which increases flexibility in statistical assumptions beyond existing approaches and can achieve higher estimation accuracy. The data col

Fast, automated, real-time 3D passive balloon catheter tracking during MRI-guided cardiac catheterization using orthogonal projection imaging and real-time image-based catheter detection.

PURPOSE: MRI-guidance of cardiac catheterization is currently performed using one or multiple 2D imaging planes, which may be suboptimal for catheter navigation, especially in patients with complex anatomies. The purpose of the work was to develop a robust real-time 3D catheter tracking method and 3D visualization strategy for improved MRI-guidance of cardiac catheterization procedures. METHODS: A fast 3D tracking technique was developed using continuous acquisition of two orthogonal 2D-projection images. Each projection corresponds to a gradient echo stack of slices with only the central k-s

The Impact of TE and TR on Apparent Diffusion Coefficient and Diffusion-derived Vessel Density Quantification: Studies of Healthy Liver and Spleen.

PURPOSE: This study investigates the impact of echo time (TE) and repetition time (TR) on apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC) and diffusion-derived vessel density (DDVD) values. Spleen has longer T1 and T2 than the liver, and spleen has a T2 similar to most hepatocellular carcinomas. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Liver and spleen diffusion MRI was conducted with six volunteers at 3.0 T with multiple sessions. When TE was changed with steps of TE=46 ms, 52 ms, 60 ms, 70 ms, and 80 ms, TR was fixed at 2000 ms. When TR was changed with steps of TR=200 ms, 300 ms, 500 ms, 1000 ms, and 2000 ms, TE was f

Enhancing the Visibility of Multiple Sclerosis Lesions using Fused Images of Fluid Attenuated Inversion Recovery (FLAIR) and white matter Attenuated Inversion Recovery (WAIR) MRI Sequences.

INTRODUCTION: Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic autoimmune disease of the central nervous system in which accurate lesion detection is essential for diagnosis and follow-up. Although the Fluid Attenuated Inversion Recovery (FLAIR) MRI sequence is routinely used, it may underestimate lesions in certain brain regions. This study evaluated whether fused images generated using minimum pixel value extraction (MinPE) from FLAIR and white matter-attenuated inversion recovery (WAIR) sequences improve lesion detection. MATERIALS AND METHODS: This retrospective single-center study analyzed brain MRI

IT: An interpretable transformer model for Alzheimer's disease prediction based on PET/MR images.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) represents a significant challenge due to its progressive neurodegenerative impact, particularly within an aging global demographic. This underscores the critical need for developing sophisticated diagnostic tools for its early detection and precise monitoring. Within this realm, PET/MR imaging stands out as a potent dual-modality approach that transforms sensor data into detailed perceptual mappings, thereby enriching our grasp of brain pathophysiology. To capitalize on the strengths of PET/MR imaging in diagnosing AD, we have introduced a novel deep learning framewor

Self-supervised learning leads to improved performance in biparametric prostate MRI classification.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Develop two-dimensional self-supervised learning (SSL) models which can be used in volumetric imaging and demonstrate their application in volumetric prostate bi-parametric MRI (bpMRI) classification tasks. METHODS: Prostate multiparametric MRI (mpMRI) data from 12 distinct European centers were used to train two SSL methods. We transfer these models to classification tasks in volumetric prostate bpMRI using 3 attention-based multiple instance learning (MIL) methods with T2-weighted (T2) or bpMRI studies. Three prostate cancer (PCa) tasks were considered: PCa diagnos

Evaluating Stack-of-Stars and FLORET 3D Ultrashort Echo Time MRI to Assess Structural Pathology in Cystic Fibrosis Lung Disease.

RATIONALE AND OBJECTIVES: Free-breathing structural lung MRI using 3D Ultrashort Echo Time (UTE) techniques has advanced substantially; however, image quality and diagnostic performance can vary depending on the acquisition strategy. Stack-of-Stars (SoS) is a commonly available UTE method, whereas FLORET (Fermat Looped, Orthogonally Encoded Trajectories) enables more efficient and isotropic k-space sampling. Thus, the purpose of this study was to compare the image quality and diagnostic performance of SoS and FLORET 3D UTE MRI in detecting structural lung abnormalities in individuals with cyst

Presentation of microstructural diffusion components by color schemes in abdominal organs.

PURPOSE: Development of a color scheme representation to facilitate the interpretation of tri-exponential DWI data from abdominal organs, where multi-exponential behavior is more pronounced. METHODS: Multi-exponential analysis of DWI data provides information about the microstructure of the tissue under study. The tri-exponential signal analysis generates numerous parameter images that are difficult to analyze individually. Summarized color images can simplify at-a-glance analysis. A color scheme was developed in which the slow, intermediate, and fast diffusion components were each assigned t

Multi-Loss Disentangled Generative-Discriminative Learning for Multimodal Representation in Schizophrenia.

Schizophrenia (SCZ) is a multifactorial mental illness, thus it will be beneficial for exploring this disease using multimodal data, including functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), genes, and the gut microbiome. Previous studies reported combining multimodal data can offer complementary information for better depicting the abnormalities of SCZ. However, the existing multimodal-based methods have multiple limitations. First, most approaches cannot fully use the relationships among different modalities for the downstream tasks. Second, representing multimodal data by the modality-common

Reproducibility and feasibility of optic nerve diffusion MRI techniques: single-shot echo-planar imaging (EPI), readout-segmented EPI, and reduced field-of-view diffusion-weighted imaging.

BACKGROUND: Diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) is an essential technique for optic nerve diseases. However, the image quality of optic nerve DWI is decreased by the distortions and artifacts associated with conventional techniques. In order to establish this method as a critical tool in optic nerve diseases, reproducibility and feasibility of new technical and conventional approaches of DWI need to be systematically investigated. METHODS: DWIs were acquired using ss-EPI, readout-segmented EPI (rs-EPI) DWI, and reduced field-of-view (rFOV) DWI. 26 volunteers (mean age 31.2 years) underwent repea

Magnetic Resonance Enema in Rectosigmoid Endometriosis.

Intestinal endometriosis occurs in 4% to 37% of women with deep endometriosis (DE). Noninvasive diagnosis of presence and characteristics of rectosigmoid endometriosis permits the best counseling of patients and ensures best therapeutic planning. Magnetic resonance enema (MR-e) is accurate in diagnosing DE. After colon cleansing, rectal distention and opacification improves the performance of MR-e in diagnosing rectosigmoid endometriosis. MR imaging cannot optimally assess the depth of penetration of endometriosis in the intestinal wall. There is a need for multicentric studies with a larger s
