Course of a sudden sensorineural hearing loss case diagnosed as intra-labyrinthine hemorrhage with MRI in the early phase.

Intralabyrinthine hemorrhage (ILH) is a rare differential diagnosis of sudden sensorineural hearing loss. Investigations using magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in the early phase from the onset are inevitable to diagnose ILH. However, MRI is not usually performed during the early phases of sudden sensorineural hearing loss. Hence, ILH is rarely diagnosed, and the hearing prognosis and vestibular function in patients have been poorly understood. In the present study, we report the detailed course of ILH with relatively good hearing recovery. Additionally, vestibular function recovery was quanti

Modulation of vestibular function and receptor expression by experimental hypergravity in a rat model.

Motion sickness develops because of a mismatch or conflict between the information gathered from the visual input, somatosensory input, and the vestibular system. Altered gravity can cause motion sickness while traveling in space. In this study, we aimed to establish a rat model of hypergravity-stimulated motion sickness using hypergravity equipment and investigate changes in serotonin and histamine receptors. Overall, 21 rats were allocated to three experimental groups (4G-24 h, 4G-2 weeks, and 4G-4weeks) and one control group, with seven rats in each group. We performed western blotting and

Temporal Bone 3D Reconstruction and Analysis of Endolymph Volume in Meniere Disease.

HYPOTHESIS: Endolymph volumes within the cochlea and vestibule differ between Meniere's disease (MD) and similar-age controls. BACKGROUND: Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has potential to diagnose endolymphatic hydrops (EH). In this study, we utilize archival human temporal bones (HTB) to establish objective reference values for endolymph volumes within the cochlea and vestibule in patients with MD and in age-similar controls, for correlation with future MRI studies. METHODS: Nineteen HTBs were selected for 3-dimensional reconstruction and volume analysis, including 12 HTBs with MD and 7 ag

Profound sensorineural hearing loss in ears with endolymphatic hydrops.

BACKGROUND: Recently, Hydrops MRI has unexpectedly identified endolymphatic hydrops (EH) in patients presenting with profound sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL), highlighting a discrepancy that prompted further investigation. OBJECTIVE: This study aimed to elucidate the mechanism of profound SNHL in ears with EH. METHODS: Six (3%) of 184 patients with positive EH on Hydrops MRI presented with profound SNHL. Three of 6 patients had been previously diagnosed as Meniere's disease, and 4 patients were compromised hosts. All patients underwent an inner ear test battery followed by Hydrops MRI. RE

Comparison between high-resolution 3D-IR with real reconstruction and 3D-flair sequences in the assessment of endolymphatic hydrops in 3 tesla.

BACKGROUND: The main sequences used to assess degree of endolymphatic hydrops (EH) are the 3D- inversion-recovery (IR) with real reconstruction and the 3D- fluid-attenuated inversion recovery (FLAIR). OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study is to describe and compare both sequences. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Forty-two consecutive patients diagnosed with probable or definite Ménièr´s disease were referred for hydrops MR examination. Vestibular and cochlear EH in both sequences were read by two independent radiologists, unaware of the patient's clinical status. The primary study endpoint was the con

Prenatal electroporation-mediated gene transfer restores Slc26a4 knock-out mouse hearing and vestibular function.

The otocyst, an anlage of the inner ear, presents an attractive target to study treatment strategies for genetic hearing loss and inner ear development. We have previously reported that electroporation-mediated transuterine gene transfer of Connexin30, utilizing a monophasic pulse into Connexin30-/- mouse otocysts at embryonic day 11.5, is able to prevent putative hearing deterioration. However, it is not clear whether supplementary gene transfer can rescue significant morphological changes, caused by genetic deficits. In addition, with the transuterine gene transfer technique utilized in our

Children with posterior semicircular canal dehiscence: A case series.

Posterior semicircular canal dehiscence is a rare condition and can cause a variety of symptoms. We report three cases of children between 5 and 12 years of age with a PSCD. They all presented with different complaints as follows: Tullio phenomenon in the first case, conductive hearing loss in the second and, conductive hearing loss and pulsatile tinnitus in the third. Imaging showed in all cases a PSCD on the right side, caused by a prominent jugular bulb (high riding bulb). We describe the clinical, audiometric and radiological findings, and discuss the management and therapy. A conservative

Accelerated Internal Auditory Canal Screening Magnetic Resonance Imaging Protocol With Compressed Sensing 3-Dimensional T2-Weighted Sequence.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: High-resolution T2-weighted sequences are frequently used in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) studies to assess the cerebellopontine angle and internal auditory canal (IAC) in sensorineural hearing loss patients but have low yield and lengthened examinations. Because image content in the Wavelet domain is sparse, compressed sensing (CS) that uses incoherent undersampling of k-space and iterative reconstruction can accelerate MRI acquisitions. We hypothesized that an accelerated CS T2 Sampling Perfection with Application optimized Contrasts using different flip angle Evo

Visual vertigo: Vertigo of oculomotor origin.

Since Róbert Bárány proposed his hypothesis on vestibulo-ocular reflex (VOR), dizziness associated with vertigo has been interpreted as being vestibular in origin. However, there have been many contradictory findings showing modulations of VOR, which have caused confusion as to VOR's role and accuracy. Further, there seems to be an influence of VOR when the anatomical inner ear structures are congenitally absent. Many people report vertiginous symptoms when they are exposed to visually challenging situations. These people with visually induced vertigo are usually found to have only mildly abno

Vertigo Perception and Quality of Life in Patients after Surgical Treatment of Vestibular Schwannoma with Pretreatment Prehabituation by Chemical Vestibular Ablation.

Surgical removal of vestibular schwannoma causes acute vestibular symptoms, including postoperative vertigo and oscillopsia due to nystagmus. In general, the dominant symptom postoperatively is vertigo. Preoperative chemical vestibular ablation can reduce vestibular symptoms postoperatively. We used 1.0 mL of 40 mg/mL nonbuffered gentamicin in three intratympanic installations over 2 days, 2 months preoperatively in 10 patients. Reduction of vestibular function was measured by the head impulse test and the caloric test. Reduction of vestibular function was found in all gentamicin patient group
