Presentation and management of congenital dacryocystocele.

OBJECTIVE: Our goal was to report the presentation, complications, and treatment strategies for infants with congenital dacryocystocele. PATIENTS AND METHODS: We performed a retrospective chart review of all patients presenting with dacryocystoceles to Children's Hospital Boston between the years of 1997 and 2006. This study was approved by the institutional review board. RESULTS: Forty-two patients (46 eyes) were identified (18 male, 24 female), presenting at a median age of 7 days of life. Twenty-eight (65%) patients presented with cellulitis or dacryocystitis and required systemic antibio

MR imaging appearance of frontal sinus barotrauma.

We present the case of a flight passenger who experienced acute and severe headache during landing. MR imaging was performed because the patient had a history of vascular malformation and revealed an incidental venous angioma. A mass lesion in the frontal sinus, consistent with submucosal hematoma secondary to barotrauma, was thought to be the cause of the headache. To our knowledge, this is the first case of sinus barotrauma described in the radiologic literature and the first to describe the associated MR imaging findings.

Giant frontal sinus mucocoele with intracranial extension and orbital displacement in an elderly Nigerian.

Mucocoele of the frontal sinus presents with initial sign of forehead swelling in about 10% of cases, and cases with huge intracranial extension have been reported to be rare. We present a case of a giant frontal sinus mucocoele with intra-cranial and intra-orbital extensions exerting a mass effect on the anterior cranial fossa in a 78 year old Nigerian female with resultant forehead swelling, proptosis and total blindness of the left eye. Diagnosis was made on clinical and radiological basis, and enucleation using coronal flap approach was done. Immediate repair of the resultant frontal bone

Salivary duct cyst: its frequency in a certain Japanese population group (Tohoku districts), with special reference to adenomatous proliferation of the epithelial lining.

It is reported in the European and American literature that salivary duct cysts constitute about 10% of all cysts of the salivary glands, although they appear to be rare in Japan. Between 1975 and 1999, only 3 (0.5%) of 586 salivary gland cysts were diagnosed as salivary duct cysts at the Division of Clinical Pathology, Iwate Medical University Hospital. Histologically, two cases appeared as a unilocular lesion lined by double- and multi-layered epithelium. The other case showed marked, intraluminar and intramural adenomatous proliferation of the epithelial lining, suggesting that the lesion w

Radiographic maxillary sinus findings in the elderly.

The prevalence of radiographic maxillary sinus findings in 293 elderly subjects (76, 81, and 86 years old) were investigated with the use of panoramic radiography: 124 subjects were edentulous in both jaws, 167 had an edentulous maxilla, and 169 had at least one natural tooth left. Mucous cysts or diffuse mucosal thickenings were found in 12% of the subjects. Of the mucosal thickenings, 70% were found in subjects with a dentate upper jaw (p < 0.05), suggesting an odontogenic origin for that proportion (40%) exceeding the prevalence in subjects edentulous in the maxilla. That the prevalence of

Simultaneous, congenital, mucocoele of the Blandin-Nühn glands and teratoma of the tongue: early management and follow up at one year.

Mucocoele of the Blandin-Nühn glands and teratomas of the tongue are rare in newborn babies. We present what is to our knowledge the first documented case of both at the same time, and describe management and follow up over 12 months after the birth. Prenatal diagnosis defined the treatment plan during delivery to establish an airway for the baby promptly. A normal delivery is possible if the cyst is anterior, and can be punctured during delivery. Delayed excision reduces the possibility of oedema and obstruction of the airway, ensures complete resection, avoids recurrence, and confirms the di

[A case of chronic pyopolypous pansinusitis with mucopyocele of the frontal sinus].

Chronic pyopolypous pansinusitis in a patient presenting with mucopyocele of the frontal sinus is described. A brief characteristic of cyst-like extension of the paranasal sinuses is presented. Special attention is given to the main diagnostic criteria. The methods of surgical and postoperative treatment of patients with the pathology in question are discussed.

Imaging of mucocoele of the appendix with emphasis on the CT findings: a report of 10 cases.

AIM: Mucocoele of the appendix denotes an obstructive dilatation of the appendiceal lumen due to abnormal accumulation of mucus. It is sometimes associated with pseudomyxoma peritonei, which predicts a malignant origin. We present the CT findings and additional imaging studies of 10 patients with neoplastic appendiceal mucocoele and discuss the clinical implications. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Abdominal CT findings from 10 patients with appendiceal mucocoele were reviewed. Barium enema, US and MRI were additionally performed in three patients. There were five men and five women aged 45-80 years.

Neurological manifestations of paranasal disease: problems in prognosis.

Early diagnosis of sphenoidal sinus mucocoeles presenting with visual loss is important as appropriately timed surgical intervention may improve the visual deficit. Two cases of sphenoidal sinus mucocoeles presenting with visual symptoms are reported in whom the diagnosis was only established at a late stage. A third case thought on clinical and radiological grounds to have a sphenoidal sinus mucocoele causing visual symptoms was found to have a frontal astrocytic glioma eroding through the ethmoidal sinus. These case reports stress that the definitive diagnosis in cases of sphenoidal sinus mu

Core biopsies were harvested at implant placement for histology (hematoxylin-eosin, Masson-Goldner) and tartrate-resistant acid phosphatase (TRAP) staining. Clinical outcomes included surgica …

There are a few studies that have focused on histopathologic findings in interval appendectomies compared to acute appendicitis and negative … s were detected. Two cases with complicated appendiceal diverticulosis showing mucosal hyperplasia, mucocele and extruded mucin pools were initially mistaken for low-grade appendiceal mucinous neoplasms. Ten patients (48 %) had residual acute inflammation, four of whom were associated with appendicolith and Actinomyces. We found eleven (0.13 %) patients [a …

METHODS: Accordingly, archived biopsy specimens of subjects with a diagnosis of mucocele (control; n = 7) and those of subjects complaining of dry mouth (experimental; n = 12) were subjected to histopathological and immunohistochemical assessments for SGK-1, its phosphorylated (active) form (pSGK-1), and the alpha subunit of ENaC (α-ENa …

A Cadaveric Feasibility Study of the Biportal Endoscopic Transfrontal Sinus Approach: A Minimally Invasive Approach to the Anterior Cranial Fossa.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: The trans-sinus transglabellar and bifrontal approaches offer direct access to the anterior cranial fossa. Howeve … narrow corridor limits achieving a watertight closure which can be mitigated with a pedicled flap. Mucocele risk is minimized with full cranialization or reconstruction of the FS. CONCLUSION: The BETS approach is a minimally invasive approach that translates the concepts of EEA to the FS. It allows excellent access to the anterior cranial fossa structure …
