UniSAL: Unified Semi-supervised Active Learning for histopathological image classification.

Histopathological image classification using deep learning is crucial for accurate and efficient cancer diagnosis. However, annotating a large amount of histopathological images for training is costly and time-consuming, leading to a scarcity of available labeled data for training deep neural networks. To reduce human efforts and improve efficiency for annotation, we propose a Unified Semi-supervised Active Learning framework (UniSAL) that effectively selects informative and representative samples for annotation. First, unlike most existing active learning methods that only train from labeled

Dynamic abdominal MRI image generation using cGANs: A generalized model for various breathing patterns with extensive evaluation.

Organ motion is a limiting factor during the treatment of abdominal tumors. During abdominal interventions, medical images are acquired to provide guidance, however, this increases operative time and radiation exposure. In this paper, conditional generative adversarial networks are implemented to generate dynamic magnetic resonance images using external abdominal motion as a surrogate signal. The generator was trained to account for breathing variability, and different models were investigated to improve motion quality. Additionally, an objective and subjective study were conducted to assess i

Precise dental caries segmentation in X-rays with an attention and edge dual-decoder network.

Caries segmentation holds significant clinical importance in medical image analysis, particularly in the early detection and treatment of dental caries. However, existing deep learning segmentation methods often struggle with accurately segmenting complex caries boundaries. To address this challenge, this paper proposes a novel network, named AEDD-Net, which combines an attention mechanism with a dual-decoder structure to enhance the performance of boundary segmentation for caries. Unlike traditional methods, AEDD-Net integrates atrous spatial pyramid pooling with cross-coordinate attention me

Radiogenomic explainable AI with neural ordinary differential equation for identifying post-SRS brain metastasis radionecrosis.

BACKGROUND: Stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) is widely used for managing brain metastases (BMs), but an adverse effect, radionecrosis, complicates post-SRS management. Differentiating radionecrosis from tumor recurrence non-invasively remains a major clinical challenge, as conventional imaging techniques often necessitate surgical biopsy for accurate diagnosis. Machine learning and deep learning models have shown potential in distinguishing radionecrosis from tumor recurrence. However, their clinical adoption is hindered by a lack of explainability, limiting understanding and trust in their dia

Tooth cavities detection based on digital image processing and artificial intelligence techniques.

Tooth cavities are primarily driven by sugar-induced bacterial activity that progressively erodes dental structures. Advances in medical image processing provide dentists with valuable tools to support accurate diagnosis and selection of appropriate therapeutic interventions, thereby improving oral healthcare. This study presents the development of an automated dental disease detection system, designed to reduce clinician workload, minimise diagnostic time, and lower the risk of human error. Dental radiographs are first subjected to noise reduction, greyscale conversion, filtering, and resizin

Automated detection of anterior crossbite on intraoral images and videos utilizing deep learning.

AIM: Malocclusion has emerged as a burgeoning global public health concern. Individuals with an anterior crossbite face an elevated risk of exhibiting characteristics such as a concave facial profile, negative overjet, and poor masticatory efficiency. In response to this issue, a convolutional neural network (CNN)-based model is proposed, designed for the automated detection and classification of intraoral images and videos. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 1865 intraoral images were included in the present study, 1493 (80%) of which were allocated for training, and 372 (20%) for testing the

Adapt or specialize? A comprehensive evaluation of adapted SAM versus task-specific CNNs for fetal abdominal segmentation.

BACKGROUND: The fetal abdomen is crucial in prenatal screening, offering key insights into fetal growth and congenital anomalies. However, segmenting internal abdominal structures in ultrasound (US) remains challenging due to anatomical variability, overlapping organs, and low contrast. While CNN-based models have shown strong performance in fetal head analysis, most existing methods focus on biometric measurements (e.g., head or abdominal circumference), leaving internal abdominal organ segmentation largely underexplored. Recently, foundation models like the Segment Anything Model (SAM) have

Using fMRI Time Series and Functional Connectivity for Autism Classification: Integrating Mamba and KAN in Domain-Adversarial Neural Networks.

Domain differences in fMRI analysis often cause biases that negatively affect Autism classification. To address this, we propose a novel pipeline leveraging a Domain Adversarial Neural Network (DANN) architecture to extract domain-invariant yet classification-informative features by integrating Mamba and Kolmogorov-Arnold Network (KAN) models. The DANN framework consists of an extractor, a domain classifier, and a label classifier, trained in an adversarial way to reduce domain bias while maintaining classification accuracy. The extractor employs two parallel paths: one processes fMRI time ser

Clinical application of a deep learning system for automatic mandibular alveolar bone quantity assessment and suggested treatment options using CBCT cross-sections.

Assessing dimensions of available bone throughout hundreds of cone-beam computed tomography cross-sectional images of the edentulous area is time-consuming, focus-demanding, and prone to variability and mistakes. This study aims for a clinically applicable artificial intelligence-based automation system for available bone quantity assessment and providing possible surgical and nonsurgical treatment options in a real-time manner. YOLOv8-seg, a single-stage convolutional neural network detector, has been used to segment mandibular alveolar bone and the inferior alveolar canal from cross-sectiona

Development of a Deep Learning Tool to Support the Assessment of Thyroid Follicular Cell Hypertrophy in the Rat.

Thyroid tissue is sensitive to the effects of endocrine disrupting substances, and this represents a significant health concern. Histopathological analysis of tissue sections of the rat thyroid gland remains the gold standard for the evaluation for agrochemical effects on the thyroid. However, there is a high degree of variability in the appearance of the rat thyroid gland, and toxicologic pathologists often struggle to decide on and consistently apply a threshold for recording low-grade thyroid follicular hypertrophy. This research project developed a deep learning image analysis solution tha

Joint segmentation of retinal layers and fluid lesions in optical coherence tomography with cross-dataset learning.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) is the leading cause of irreversible vision loss among people over 50 years old, which manifests in the retina through various changes of retinal layers and pathological lesions. The accurate segmentation of optical coherence tomography (OCT) image features is crucial for the identification and tracking of AMD. Although the recent developments in deep neural network have brought profound progress in this area, accurately segmenting retinal layers and pathological lesions remains a challenging task because of the interaction betw

A two-stage multi-scale attention-based network for weakly supervised cataract fundus image enhancement.

Cataract is a major cause of vision loss and hinders further diagnosis. However, enhancing cataract fundus images remains challenging due to limited paired cataract retinal images and the difficulty of recovering fine details in the retinal images. To mitigate these challenges, we in this paper propose a two-stage multi-scale attention-based network (TSMSA-Net) for weakly supervised cataract fundus image enhancement. In Stage 1, we introduce a real-like cataract fundus image synthesis module, which utilizes domain transformation via CycleGAN to generate realistic paired cataract images from un

Segmentation of gastroesophageal reflux events using a semi-U-Net architecture with 1D/2D CNNs.

U-Net has gained traction in biomedical signal processing, particularly for segmenting 1D waveforms. Building on this success, we propose a U-Net-inspired architecture that integrates both 2D and 1D CNNs to effectively learn and segment gastroesophageal reflux (GER) events from Multichannel Intraluminal Impedance (MII) signals-specifically, a 6-channel 1D impedance signal. Current methods for GER detection are limited by the absence of efficient software, leading to time-consuming manual interpretation that is prone to errors. As a key contribution, we are also releasing the dataset of MII sig

ABVS breast tumour segmentation via integrating CNN with dilated sampling self-attention and feature interaction Transformer.

Given the rapid increase in breast cancer incidence, the Automated Breast Volume Scanner (ABVS) is developed to screen breast tumours efficiently and accurately. However, reviewing ABVS images is a challenging task owing to the significant variations in sizes and shapes of breast tumours. We propose a novel 3D segmentation network (i.e., DST-C) that combines a convolutional neural network (CNN) with a dilated sampling self-attention Transformer (DST). In our network, the global features extracted from the DST branch are guided by the detailed local information provided by the CNN branch, which

Wearable Epilepsy Seizure Detection on FPGA With Spiking Neural Networks.

The development of epilepsy monitoring solutions suitable for everyday use is a very challenging task, where different constraints should be combined, resulting from the required accuracy standards, the unobtrusiveness of the monitoring device, and the efficiency of real-time operation. Considering the time-varying nature of the electroencephalography signal (EEG), Spiking Neural Networks (SNNs) represent a promising solution to model the evolution of the brain state based on the history of the previously processed signal. This work proposes an extremely lightweight SNN-based seizure detection
