PURPOSE: To evaluate the various forms of clinical presentation, the potential of growth, the risk of functional loss and the possibility of malignant transformation of optic disk melanocytomas in European patients.
DESIGN: Retrospective observational case control study.
METHODS: Evaluation of 37 cases of optic disk melanocytomas identified in the computer files of the ocular oncology unit of Jules Gonin Hospital to determine the clinical presentation of these tumors and the risk of complications.

We describe imaging findings in a 2-year-old girl with neurocutaneous melanosis and malignant cerebral melanoma. Because the cerebral melanoma in this child was of the amelanotic type, high-signal intensity on unenhanced T1-weighted images was not present. The cutaneous lesions played a crucial role in establishing a correct (presumed) histopathologic diagnosis on the basis of the imaging findings. To our knowledge this is the first report describing an intracranial amelanotic malignant melanoma in association with neurocutaneous melanosis.

BACKGROUND: Nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome (NBCC) is an autosomal dominant multisystem disorder. Persons with the NBCC gene have varied susceptibility to basal cell carcinoma (BCC) development.
OBJECTIVE: We examined the anatomic site-specific distribution of BCCs and the relation between sun exposure and numbers of BCCs in NBCC cases.
METHODS: A questionnaire asking about lifetime sun exposure, sun behavior habits, and number of BCCs was sent to 16 families with NBCC evaluated between 1985 and 1991. The results were compared with previously published data for the general population.

Recreational exposure to the sun may not explain fully current trends in melanoma incidence. The hypothesis was examined whether carcinogens in water play a role in the development of cutaneous melanoma. Giant congenital melanocytic nevus (GCMN) is a RAS/RAF mutation-driven syndrome characterized by extensive melanocytic lesions, posing psychological challenges and a lifelong risk of malignancy. BACKGROUND: The time period between onset of depigmentation around the halo nevus (HN) to complete resolution of the nevus and halo has not been well studied.
OBJECTIVE: We sought to better understand the natural history of the HN.
METHODS: A retrospective chart review of patients with a clinical diagnosis of HN selected from a private practice database (1994-2010) was performed. In all, 52 patients with 80 HN were identified. Mastocytosis can sometimes resemble other skin conditions, especially pigmented ones, not only clinically but also dermatoscopically. We report the case of a woman with the diagnosis of cutaneous mastocytosis mimicking multiple melanocytic nevi. Melanocytic stimulation can be induced by high levels of stem cell factor. The progressive increase in the number of pigmented lesions in a patient should lead us to perform a biopsy to search for mastocytosis.

The term "melanocytic nevus" comprises a group of clinically and pathologically distinct subtypes. In this prospective clinical study we evaluated the frequency, localization, and age and gender distribution of flat nevi (FN), Miescher nevi (MN), and Unna nevi (UN) in a caucasian population. Nevi were counted in 400 patients, of which 47 had a history of melanoma. Additionally, the patients answered to a detailed UV questionnaire.
