Arousal does not enhance the dominant spatial scope of attention.

A fundamental aspect of attention is its spatial scope: whether attention is narrowly focused or more broadly distributed across the visual field. Here, we examined whether the spatial scope of attention is modulated by tonic arousal level. Based on findings that arousal amplifies the selectivity of attention and memory, we hypothesized that arousal would enhance the currently dominant spatial scope of attention (narrow or broad). Participants (N = 39) performed a visual search task designed to measure the breadth of attention. Continuous auditory white noise was presented in half of the block

Does exposure within an experiment affect the influence of familiar parts versus wholes on figure assignment?

Recurring questions in visual perception concern the role of experience and the relationship between parts and wholes. We investigated these questions in an experiment in which observers reported where they perceived a figure relative to a central border in bipartite displays in which the region on one side depicted either: (1) an identifiable configuration of a familiar basic-level object in its typical upright orientation (a "whole" familiar configuration); (2) an inverted version of (1); (3) a part rearranged (PR) version of (1) comprising the same parts as the upright familiar configuratio

Visual memory.

Visual memory allows us to behave adaptively in the world we live. In this tutorial we will review the types of visual memory storage that have been identified. These storage processes begin the instant a visual stimulus appears and continue through to remembering objects and scenes that were encountered decades ago. The different types of memory storage have different properties of capacity and resolution. We will discuss how our memories allow us to link new information to information that we have acquired across our life spans. We will also discuss how this linking between new information a

Color needs luminance for visual selection during scene search.

When searching visual scenes, we use low-level visual information from objects' defining features such as color and luminance contrasts. What is the relative influence of color and luminance for saccade target selection? Basic perceptual research suggests that we are not very sensitive to peripheral color, yet color is thought to be an important basic feature guiding visual search. Previous gaze-contingent research shows that targets can be localized faster in color than in grayscale scenes, therefore the availability of color in the visual periphery indeed helps visual search. However, object

Generative modelling of continuous feature foraging reveals probabilistic representations of target distributions.

To successfully orient ourselves within noisy visual environments, we must focus our attention on items of importance, ignoring sources of distraction. This selective attending is typically thought to be facilitated by templates, tuned towards current goals. However, in real-world scenes, the appearance of objects, such as their colour or luminance, varies greatly due to perceptual interpretation and environmental factors. Therefore, tuning attentional templates probabilistically may be more efficient than tuning them to precise values. This seems particularly important during continuous tasks

How background music rhythm modulates time perception: Evidence from the estimation of collision time.

Time-to-collision (TTC) estimation, the ability to predict when a moving object will reach a designated position, represents a critical skill for motor behavior regulation. However, although existing studies have demonstrated significant effects of object velocity and distance on TTC estimation, the role of auditory rhythm remains poorly understood. This study systematically investigated the influence of background musical rhythm on TTC estimation through two experiments (manipulating velocity and distance variables) combined with Bayesian modeling. The results demonstrated that ‌fast-tempo mu

Things are looking (farther) up: Upward gaze orientation is overestimated.

In the current work, we examine upward head orientation. Previous work has shown that downward gaze orientation is overestimated by a factor of ~1.5, while azimuth gaze orientation is overestimated by a factor of ~1.2. In Experiment 1, we compared head orientation in the upward, downward, and azimuth (leftward and rightward) directions. The factor by which observers overestimated upward head orientation was 1.56, similar to overestimates in downward head orientation in this and downward gaze orientation in previous work. Azimuth gaze orientation was overestimated by ~1.26, similar to previous

Neither the number of feature dimensions nor their task relevance necessarily affect interocular grouping in binocular rivalry.

When one eye views half of stimulus A and half of stimulus B, and the other eye views the respective other halves, perception fluctuates. Among percepts reflecting monocular inputs (indicating typical binocular rivalry), percepts of undivided stimuli A and B occur. They indicate the grouping of parts of inputs from both eyes together, a process called "interocular grouping". Our study investigated if, similar to binocular rivalry, this process is affected by attentional modulation stemming from manipulating the task relevance of the stimulus features driving it. We used stimuli in which form (

Age-of-acquisition affects object recognition and compound word identification: Evidence from visual duration thresholds and progressive demasking.

Items acquired during childhood are processed more quickly and accurately than those acquired during adulthood, a phenomenon known as the age of acquisition (AoA) effect. One explanation is that the AoA effect results from the arbitrary nature of the input-output mapping during the development of a lexical-semantic representation. However, previous behavioural studies have not directly compared the AoA effects in pictures and word processing. To investigate this, 48 British English students completed a visual duration threshold task and four variations of progressive demasking experiments. In

Predicting errors before they occur using trial-by-trial dynamics of pre-error and post-error behavior.

Errors rarely occur in isolation, but rather within behavioral sequences and are known to shape subsequent behavior. However, understanding the full time course of the impact of errors has been challenging given data limitations. Here, to gain key insights, two groups of precisely matched participants (n > 35,000) were compared; those who made versus did not make an error in a short object discrimination task. Linear mixed-effects models revealed error-induced effects both preceding and following errors. First, the error group showed pre-error speeding up to eight trials before the error occur

Spatial structure triggers systematic foraging: Segmenting search displays leads to searching by segments.

Spatial structure often provides information about the likely location of targets in visual search tasks and in real life. However, the extent to which spatial structure affects attention when it provides no information about target locations is less well understood. This is investigated here using a visual foraging task, whereby individuals search for many targets amongst many distractors. In six online experiments, participants foraged for multiple instances of two target types amongst two distractor types, defined by either features or conjunctions. Experiments comprised a series of manipul

Modulation of perceived time caused by stimulus clarity in object recognition.

This study explored the modulation of perceived time based on subjective visual perception, mainly focusing on object recognition. Unlike physical time, psychological time is subject to various influences, such as attention and stimulus characteristics. We conducted two experiments using images comprising dots to systematically vary stimulus clarity and visual recognizability. Experiment 1 revealed that perceived time was longer when an object was identifiable within the stimulus. Experiment 2 extended this finding by offering three response options related to object recognition and naming. Th

What contributes to our perception of the Shepard Tabletop Illusion?

A vertical parallelogram placed next to an identical one but rotated horizontally by 90 degrees gives rise to one of the most powerful geometrical illusions: the Shepard Tabletop Illusion. In this illusion, the two parallelograms, or tabletops, are perceived as having different aspect ratios: the vertical one appears longer and thinner than the horizontal one. Although the exact mechanisms responsible for the illusion remain unclear, it is commonly understood that the brain treats the vertical tabletop as a three-dimensional object receding into the distance, and the horizontal one as an objec

Visual recognition memory does not benefit from preserved temporal order from encoding to test.

Research suggests that items from similar spatiotemporal contexts are more likely to be retrieved together. Here, we sought to test whether preserving temporal order from encoding to test might lead to a retrieval benefit. Then, we tested the participants using test items that were either presented in the same order as during encoding, or the order of items was different due to it being randomized. Across two experiments, we found that maintaining the same temporal order did not improve overall memory performance in the visual old/new recognition task we used. Next, we show that conditional-re

The influence of spatial frequencies, orientation, and familiarity on face stimuli integration.

When we observe an object, our visual system extracts both coarse and fine information to build a coherent percept. This process is often described as a coarse-to-fine integration, in which low spatial frequency (LSF) information provides an initial scaffold for interpreting high spatial frequency (HSF) detail. Here, we examined how this integration unfolds in face perception across two experiments. We leveraged the face inversion effect-where inverted faces are harder to recognize than upright ones-as a tool to probe processing flexibility. In Experiment 1, ten participants matched two famili

Ensemble processing can be influenced by attentional cueing.

At any given moment, the human visual system encounters a wealth of sensory information that far exceeds the processing capacity of cognitive mechanisms such as visual attention and visual working memory. To overcome these capacity limitations, our visual system uses both ensemble perception and selective attention to navigate our visual environment. The goal of the current study is to explore potential interactions between these two adaptive cognitive processes. That is, we investigated whether spatial attention plays a role in forming ensemble representations. Specifically, we utilized a spa

Border-ownership reversals determine the strength of metacontrast masking.

Visual objects can be rendered invisible if their borders are assigned to other objects, showing that border-ownership (BO) is critical for perception. Objects can also be rendered invisible by using masking to limit the amount of time the brain has to process the object. An example of this is metacontrast masking (MM). MM occurs when an object is briefly presented and is followed by the presentation of a mask with closely adjacent contours. The mask can render the target object invisible, even though the target object is processed in high level brain areas. We propose that a critical factor t

Auditory scene analysis in music: A synthetic review.

Music is the synthesis of a multitude of components: the combination of spectrotemporal structures emerging from different acoustic or electronic instruments, carefully orchestrated to form a connected whole. From these complex textures, our auditory system groups components through a process called musical scene analysis (MSA). In this review, we aim to address several questions about MSA. What are the perceptual principles underpinning musical scene perception? How are these principles being probed with different experimental paradigms? What stimulus and listener factors shape MSA? And what

Limited effects of action on ensemble processing.

Previous research has shown that production of an action toward a visual stimulus may prioritize features of that stimulus for a brief period of time. One recent report has suggested that such an action effect specifically influences ensemble processing - the extraction of summary statistics from a display of multiple items. In the present study we replicate the results that led to that conclusion by having participants assess the mean size of elements in an ensemble after having made an action to either a small or large object. The size of the acted-on object biased the ensemble judgment, but

Listeners do not tune in to more rewarding voices.

During conversations in the presence of other competing talkers, multiple speech streams compete for listeners' attentional focus. Listeners must segregate speech streams, and selectively attend to the target talker while filtering out irrelevant speech. Research on value-driven attention suggests that perceptual and attentional processes are biased by prior rewarding experiences with stimuli-that is, high-valued stimuli win attentional competition. However, it remains unknown whether such effects generalize to speech perception in multitalker environments. Here, the present study investigated
