The objective of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and economic efficiency of a systemic treatment of toxic puerperal metritis in dairy cows with ceftiofur. OBJECTIVE: To establish the prevalence of vitamin A deficiency during pregnancy and lactation in a group of urban Mexican women.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: A group of pregnant women who attended a prenatal care program were invited to participate. Subjects had no added pathologies and were less than 20 weeks pregnant. Evaluations were performed 3 times during pregnancy until 24 weeks post-partum. Vitamin A levels were determined in serum by high performance liquid chromatography (HPLC). The new onset of pemphigus in the postpartum period is exceedingly rare with only 1 case previously reported in the literature. We describe a 31-year-old woman who developed extensive denudation of her skin shortly after delivering her second child. Histologic examination, immunofluorescence testing, and immunoprecipitation with desmoglein 1 confirmed the diagnosis of pemphigus foliaceus. The patient responded to treatment with prednisone, cyclophosphamide, and plasmapheresis. The effect of the postpartum period on the onset and exacerbation of immune-mediated bullous diseases is discussed.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the relationship between the presence of microorganisms at the time of cesarean at different sites of the genital tract and the development of postpartum endometritus.
METHODS: One-hundred thirty-three healthy women who delivered by cesarean were enrolled in this prospective study. Cultures were obtained during the surgery and on days 3-5 postoperatively. Spontaneous coronary artery dissection is an extremely rare cause of myocardial infarction. It has been reported mainly in young women during or after pregnancy. The prognosis and treatment of coronary dissection are not clear. We report three cases of spontaneous coronary artery dissection in young women. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether the risk of maternal overweight associated with an excessive rate of gestational gain needs to be balanced against the risks of impaired fetal growth associated with a low rate of gain.
METHODS: Rate of gestational weight gain was measured prospectively in a sample of 274 young, low-income, and primarily minority women (12-29 years old) with pregravid body mass indices (BMI) in the normal range (19.8-26.0). We defined an excessive rate of gain between 20-36 weeks' gestation as one greater than 0.68 kg/week, and a low rate of gain as one less than 0.34 kg/week.

In a retrospective study sex ratio and mortality were analysed in a captive colony of common marmosets (Callithrix jacchus). Seven hundred and thirty-five infants in 294 litters (20 singletons, 119 twins, 140 triplets, 14 quadruplets) out of 57 breeding females were evaluated. A 34 year old woman developed cerebral infarction, following a tonic-clonic seizure. A vertebral artery dissection was demonstrated and may have been caused by arterial trauma during the seizure. This cause of morbidity following convulsive seizures may have been overlooked in the past and needs to be recognised in view of the potential benefits of anticoagulation.
