Anatomical Study of Abdominal Wall Muscle Innervation to Optimize Retroperitoneal Vascular Approach.

INTRODUCTION: Different surgical approaches are used in aortic surgery. Retroperitoneal approaches can result in abdominal wall weakness and flank bulging. These approaches often require dissection of the anterolateral or anteromedial muscles of the abdominal wall. During dissection, the underlying nerves are at great risk of injury, which induces significant complications in abdominal wall muscles. Few studies have been conducted to minimize the risk of injury to these nerves. OBJECTIVES: This study aims to describe the trajectory of abdominal muscle motor nerves and their relationship to ri

Spontaneous Extraperitoneal Hematoma Related to May-Thurner Syndrome.

In this report, we describe a rare case: deep vein thrombosis due to May-Thurner syndrome with a spontaneous pelvic extraperitoneal hematoma. This unique challenge highlights balancing thrombosis treatment and bleeding risk. Endovascular treatment with delayed anticoagulation may be an alternative to surgery for stable retroperitoneal hematoma in May-Thurner syndrome patients.

A systematic review of pN0 testicular seminoma: a new clinical entity and future directions.

Retroperitoneal lymph node dissection (RPLND) for testicular seminoma with enlarged retroperitoneal lymph nodes has received increased consideration and exposed a new clinical entity: pN0 disease. Enlarged, nonmetastatic retroperitoneal lymph nodes provide insight into the natural history of seminoma while offering a benchmark for improving the accuracy of staging. The purpose of this systematic review was to report the pN0 rates, describe risk factors associated with it, and discuss emerging research that may reduce its incidence. We performed a systemic review of published literature on PubM

Non-choriocarcinomatous trophoblastic tumors of testis in postchemotherapy retroperitoneal lymph node dissections.

Non-choriocarcinomatous trophoblastic tumors (NCTTs) are seldomly diagnosed in male genital tract. As they have been recently described among the testicular germ cell tumor (TGCT) variants, pathologists' familiarity with their morphology is limited. We searched our electronic hospital records covering the years 2000-2017 for post-chemotherapy retroperitoneal TGCT metastectomies. Slides of all cases with viable tumor were retrieved from the archives and reviewed. Cases suspected of N-CTT morphologies were subjected to immunohistochemistry. Twelve NCTTs were identified, 9 of which were unseen or

Functional and radiological outcome of anterior retroperitoneal versus posterior transforaminal interbody fusion in the management of single-level lumbar degenerative disease.

OBJECTIVE: In this study the authors compared the anterior lumbar interbody fusion (ALIF) and posterior transforaminal lumbar interbody fusion (TLIF) techniques in a homogeneous group of patients affected by single-level L5-S1 degenerative disc disease (DDD) and postdiscectomy syndrome (PDS). The purpose of the study was to analyze perioperative, functional, and radiological data between the two techniques. METHODS: A retrospective analysis of patient data was performed between 2015 and 2018. Patients were clustered into two homogeneous groups (group 1 = ALIF, group 2 = TLIF) according to sur

Fatal Spontaneous Retropharyngeal Hematoma with Airway Obstruction in the Setting of Treatment with Dipyridamole.

We report a fatal case of airway obstruction caused by spontaneous retropharyngeal hematoma (RH) in the setting of treatment with dipyridamole. A 90-year-old woman presented with cervical swelling, neck and chest ecchymoses, and complaints of dyspnea. She suffered cardiopulmonary arrest in the ambulance, and her death was confirmed after transportation to the hospital. The major finding of postmortem computed tomography (PMCT) prior to autopsy was widening of the prevertebral soft tissue. The results of the autopsy indicated that the cause of death was mechanical asphyxia, secondary to pharyng

[A case report of duodenal obstruction due to retroperitoneal bleeding after the rupture of a lower pancreaticoduodenal artery aneurysm].

We report a case of a patient with duodenal obstruction due to retroperitoneal bleeding after the rupture of a lower pancreaticoduodenal artery aneurysm. An 80-year-old female was admitted to our hospital because of nausea and vomiting. During hospitalization, she developed hemorrhagic shock. Enhanced computed tomography revealed retroperitoneal bleeding. Abdominal angiography revealed an 8-mm aneurysm of the lower pancreaticoduodenal artery, stenosis at the trunk of the celiac artery, and increased blood flow through the pancreaticoduodenal arcades from the superior mesenteric artery. Emboliz

The Utility of Diagnostic Laparoscopic Biopsy for Mesenteric and Retroperitoneal Lymph Nodes.

BACKGROUND Ultrasound (US) or computed tomography (CT)-guided biopsy of intra-abdominal lymph nodes is minimally invasive; however, percutaneous procedures are often difficult to perform because of the location and size of the lymph nodes. In many cases, this approach may result in insufficient specimens necessary to evaluate histopathology. In such cases, laparoscopic biopsy is useful to obtain adequate specimens, regardless of the location and size of the lymph nodes. Additionally, laparoscopic biopsy is an approach that can avoid the possible complications associated with a laparotomy. CASE

Laparoscopic Removal of a Retroperitoneal Hysteroscopic Microinsert Using Fluoroscopy.

Perforation during placement of hysteroscopic microinserts for permanent sterilization occurs in approximately .9% to 2.6% of women undergoing the procedure. Most of the time perforation results in intraperitoneal placement of the hysteroscopic microinsert requiring laparoscopy or laparotomy for removal of the device. Herein we present a case of hysteroscopic microinsert perforation with subsequent retroperitoneal identification of the device. This is the first such case to our knowledge of retroperitoneal identification and retrieval of a perforated device that required real-time fluoroscopy

Dye-assisted lymphatic-sparing laparoscopic varicocelectomy in children.

INTRODUCTION: The ideal method for varicocelectomy in children remains controversial. We present our experience with dye-assisted lymphatic-sparing laparoscopic varicocelectomy (LSLV) in children, which overcomes the limitations of previously described techniques. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Twenty-five consecutive LSLVs were performed on children with a mean age of 15 years over a 4-year period. Varicocele grade was 3 in 21 cases and grade 2 in 4. Indications for intervention were hypotrophy in 12, pain in 11 cases and family preference in 2. A scrotal injection of lymphatic dye was utilized to s

[Successfully operated cases of mediastinal and retroperitoneal bronchial cysts].

CASE REPORT: Two young men were operated in our department for bronchiogen cysts with unusual locations. In the first case a mediastinal cyst caused severe swallowing problems, while in the second a retroperitoneal cyst resembled to an adrenal adenoma. It was only the postoperative histology, which clarified the exact diagnosis of the removed cysts. DISCUSSION: Only a few percent of mediastinal tumours are bronchial cysts that develop due to developmental disorders. Symptomatic ones are more easily detectable. Bronchial cysts localized in the abdominal cavity or retroperitoneum are especially
