We report human infections with Necator gorillae and Strongyloides fuelleborni, zoonotic helminths from nonhuman primates, in Gabon. We also detected a cryptic Ancylostoma species helminth. Infections occurred in settings of localized deforestation and environmental degradation, which increase human-animal contact. Surveillance to clarify the extent of human infections is needed.

The aim was to assess the efficacy of ivermectin vs moxidectin for treating Strongyloides stercoralis infection. Ovid MEDLINE, Embase and Web of Science databases were searched for studies comparing ivermectin and moxidectin from inception to February 2024. The outcomes: elimination of infection or parasitological cure, mortality and serious adverse events. We calculated odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for dichotomous data. Heterogeneity was assessed using Chi2 test for statistical heterogeneity and results of the I2 statistic. Two trials met the inclusion criteria that i

Nowadays, snakes established as domestic exotic pets, harboring numerous (zoonotic) gastrointestinal parasites. In this parasitological survey, we used direct saline fecal smears (DSFS) to examine 586 stool samples from 71 different snake species either kept as pets in households or in zoological gardens in Germany. In addition to DSFS, carbol-fuchsin-fecal smears (n = 296), coproantigen ELISA tests (n = 98), and immunofluorescence assays (IFA; n = 77) for the detection reptile Cryptosporidium infections were conducted. Complete dissections of deceased snakes (n = 63) were also performed in or

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the present study was to evaluate in vitro the anthelmintic activity of Marrubium vulgare L. growing in Algeria against digestive strongyles in naturally infected bovine.
METHODS: The anthelmintic activities of the extracts were evaluated using the egg hatch assay and larval mortality assay. Leaves powder of M. vulgare as extracted by maceration. Ethanolic (EE) and aqueous extracts (AE) were tested at 0.78, 1.55, 3.1, 6.2, 12.5, 25, and 50 mg/ml. Albendazole and dimethyl sulfoxide were used as positive and negative controls at concentrations20 mg/ml and 3%, respectively.

The prevalence of patent Strongyloides westeri infections was determined by examination for eggs in fecal samples collected from 513 Thoroughbred (TB) foals between February 25 and June 3, 2014. The study was conducted with 244 colts and 269 fillies from 11 well-managed farms in Central Kentucky. Foals ranged from 17 to 117 days of age and had never been dewormed. The mean prevalence of patent S. westeri infection was 30% (156/513 foals). This prevalence was substantially greater than historical reports from the same sampling area during the late 1990s and early 2000s. It is hypothesized that

Hypereosinophilic syndrome is a disease characterised by a persistently elevated eosinophil count. The syndrome can be reactive to infections, autoimmune disease, cancers, etc. Multiple organ involvement can occur including cardiomyopathies, pulmonary involvement and neuropathies. We describe a case of a patient who presented with signs and symptoms of asthma with recurrent asthma exacerbations, but in fact proved to be hypereosinophilic syndrome secondary to strongyloides infection.

We report the case of an immunosuppressed patient with Strongyloides disseminated infection who was successfully treated with the veterinary parenteral form of ivermectin. A kidney transplant recipient developed disseminated infection with Strongyloides stercoralis. Because oral treatment with ivermectin was not possible, subcutaneous ivermectin (75 µg/kg/day, then 200 µg/kg/day) was given for 9 days, with clinical improvement and disappearance of all larvae. Serum ivermectin concentrations were between 15.6 ng/mL and 19.7 ng/mL during the 9 days of therapy; however, drug accumulation (plasma

Strongyloides is endemic in parts of the United States. Most often it is asymptomatic but it has a wide range of clinical presentations. Because of the unusual capacity of strongyloides for autoinfection, it can cause hyperinfection, when it effects the pulmonary and gastrointestinal systems, or disseminated infection, when other organs are involved. Both hyperinfection and disseminated strongyloides usually occur in immunosuppressed patients. We report a case of hyperinfection with strongyloides in a man presenting with fever of unknown origin who was not immunosuppressed.

A 29 year old female HIV-positive patient presented in emergency with acute right lower quadrant abdominal pain, fever, tenderness and positive Blumberg sign. Laboratorial tests revealed eosinophilia, anaemia and leukocytosis. She underwent exploratory laparotomy followed by appendectomy. The pathological analysis of the appendix revealed acute appendicitis, accentuated eosinophilia and infestation by Strongyloides stercoralis and Enterobius vermicularis. She did well after surgery and adequate treatment. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first case of eosinophilic acute appendicitis caus

IL-13 is a cytokine known to play a role in several pulmonary diseases, including asthma and fibrosis. The role of IL-13 in the context of pulmonary changes induced by helminth infection is unclear. Rats experimentally infected with Strongyloides venezuelensis and treated with anti-IL-13 neutralizing antibody were used to evaluate the role of IL-13 on functional and inflammatory changes of host lungs, and on parasite control. S. venezuelensis-induced airway hyperreactivity was IL-13-independent, but IL-13 played an essential role in driving airway mucus production and eosinophil infiltration.

Asymptomatic infection due to Strongyloides stercoralis may result in potentially fatal disease in immunodepressed patients. A case of Strongyloides stercoralis hyperinfection discovered at autopsy in a 55-year-old man who had been undergoing treatment for multiple myeloma is reported, emphasizing the clinical and pathological findings. One day earlier, he presented severe headache, abdominal pain and oliguria, from which he developed acute respiratory failure and septic shock. Because of difficulty in reaching this diagnosis, empirical treatment before starting immunosuppressive therapy may b

The hyperinfection syndrome (HS) caused by Strongyloides stercoralis has a high mortality rate (15% to 87%). A variety of risk factors and predisposing conditions have been described, including new immunosuppressive therapies; HTLV-1 infection; cadaveric transplantation; immune reconstitution syndrome; haematological malignancies (especially lymphoma); tuberculosis; malnutrition secondary to chronic Strongyloides diarrhoea; international travel and immigration. Inhibition of Th2 cell-mediated, humoral or mucosal immunity is associated with HS. HS is more frequently seen in HTLV-1 than HIV pati

Because of their free-living life cycle alternatives, Strongyloides and related nematode parasites may represent the best models for translating C. elegans science to the study of nematode parasitism. S. stercoralis, a significant pathogen of humans, can be maintained in laboratory dogs and gerbils. Biosafety precautions necessary for work with S. stercoralis, though unfamiliar to many C. elegans researchers, are straightforward and easily accomplished. Although specialized methods are necessary for large-scale culture of the free-living stages of S. stercoralis, small-scale cultures for exper

In this study, a case of Strongyloides stercoralis infection in a 38-year-old patient with complaints of chronic diarrhea and stomach ache is presented. His history showed that the patient who has been a mechanic for 25 years is a farmer as well. S. stercoralis larvae were found during the parasitological examination of the patient's stool samples taken 3 times. The patient was given Albendazol (400 mg a day) for fifteen days. After the patient started to take Albendazol, there was a reduction in the number of parasites in the stool examined on the fifth day. In the stool examinations made on

Globalization has produced an increase in the number of people at risk for contracting parasitic infection. Central nervous system infection by nematodal parasites can be devastating. Early recognition and treatment of infection can significantly decrease morbidity of the parasitic infection, as well as the risk of secondary superinfection. The clinical presentation, diagnosis, and treatment for five of the more common nematodal infections of the nervous system--Angiostrongylus spp., Baylisacaris procyonis, Gnathostoma spinigerum, Strongyloides stercoralis, and Toxocara spp.--is reviewed.
