Gender Identity Stigma in Transgender Women Is Higher After Gender-Affirming Vaginoplasty.

Gender affirmation may reduce stigma and gender-based discrimination that drive increased behaviors that can lead to HIV in transgender women (TW). For many TW, vaginoplasty is gender affirming, yet has not been previously evaluated with regard to likelihood of HIV. This pilot study of TW aimed to evaluate the influence of gender-affirming vaginoplasty on stigma and the drivers of HIV acquisition. Adult TW without HIV were recruited. Interviewer-administered surveys were used to assess demographics, gender identity stigma, psychosocial factors, importance of and satisfaction with gender affirm

Uptake of Mpox vaccination among transgender people and gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men among sexually-transmitted infection clinic clients in Vancouver, British Columbia.

OBJECTIVES: As the primary public health strategy for controlling the 2022 Mpox outbreak, it is critical to evaluate the impact of Mpox vaccination campaigns for transgender people and gay, bisexual and other men who have sex with men (T/GBM). We measured vaccine uptake and associated factors among T/GBM clients of an urban STI clinic in British Columbia (BC). METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional online survey between August 8-22, 2022 of clients who had attended the STI clinic, 5-7 weeks following the first-dose Mpox vaccination campaign in BC. We drew on a systematic review of factors as

Extra-genital Neisseria gonorrhoeae infections with genetic mutations conferring ciprofloxacin resistance among men who have sex with men and transgender women in Lima, Peru.

BACKGROUND: The increasing prevalence of drug-resistant Neisseria gonorrhoeae (NG) infections has caused great concern. Ciprofloxacin remains the empiric antimicrobial recommended to treat NG infections in Peru disregarding the susceptibility profile of circulating NG strains. We report the prevalence of individuals infected with NG strains presenting mutations in the gyrA gene that confers ciprofloxacin resistance. METHODS: We conducted a descriptive study assessing extragenital swab samples collected from a cohort of men who have sex with men and transgender women in Lima, Peru. Anal and ph

Comparing Outpatient Opioids, High-Risk Prescribing, and Opioid Poisoning Between Transgender and Cisgender Veterans: A Cross-sectional Analysis.

INTRODUCTION: Transgender veterans have a high prevalence of substance use disorder and physical and mental-health comorbidities, which are associated with prescription opioid use and overdose risk. This study compares receipt of outpatient opioids, high-risk opioid prescribing, and opioid poisoning between transgender and cisgender (i.e., nontransgender) veterans. METHODS: A secondary analysis of Veterans Health Administration health record data from January 1, 2018 to December 31, 2018 was conducted in 2021. Transgender veterans (n=9,686) were randomly matched to 3 cisgender veterans (n=29,

Psychometric validation of the Muscle Dysmorphic Disorder Inventory (MDDI) among U.S. transgender men.

Muscle dysmorphia (MD) is characterized by a pervasive belief or fear of insufficient muscularity and an elevated drive for muscularity, representing the pathological and extreme pursuit of muscularity. Psychometric properties of one of the most widely used measures of MD symptoms-the Muscle Dysmorphic Disorder Inventory (MDDI)-have yet to be evaluated in transgender men despite emerging evidence suggesting differential risk for MD symptoms in this population. In this study, we assessed the psychometric properties of the MDDI in a sample of 330 transgender men ages 18-67 years who participated

HIV care cascade and associated factors among men who have sex with men, transgender women, and genderqueer individuals in Zimbabwe: findings from a biobehavioural survey using respondent-driven sampling.

BACKGROUND: Globally, men who have sex with men (MSM), transgender women, and genderqueer individuals are at greater risk for HIV than the general population although little data are available from these groups in Zimbabwe, a country with a national adult HIV prevalence of 12·9%. We aimed to examine progress towards the UNAIDS 90-90-90 treatment targets and factors associated with meeting the targets among a sample of MSM, transgender women, and genderqueer individuals in Zimbabwe. METHODS: In this cross-sectional survey in 2019, we used respondent-driven sampling to identify MSM, transgender

Risk factors associated with HCV co-infection amongst MSM and transgender women living with HIV in Mexico City: A case-control study.

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: Hepatitis C virus infection (HCV) is a major cause of co-morbidity in people living with HIV (PLWHIV). The modes of HCV transmission in the local population of PLWHIV are still unclear. We conducted this study to identify risk factors for HCV transmission amongst PLWHIV in central Mexico. MATERIAL AND METHODS: We enrolled HIV/HCV co-infected cases and HIV controls receiving care in two outpatient clinics in Mexico City. Structured questionnaires were applied, covering demographics, history of percutaneous exposures, sexual behaviors, self-reported STD and recreati

Disclosure of Same-Sex Sexual Practices to Family and Healthcare Providers by Men Who Have Sex with Men and Transgender Women in Nigeria.

Disclosure of same-sex sexual practices by men who have sex with men (MSM) and transgender women (TGW) may facilitate appropriate healthcare engagement, including risk assessment for HIV and other sexually transmitted infections (STIs), and negotiation of condom use with partners. However, disclosure may also generate stigma. In these cross-sectional analyses, MSM and TGW were categorized based on self-report of disclosure to family members and healthcare providers (HCP) at enrollment into the TRUST/RV368 study of comprehensive HIV and STI care programs in Abuja and Lagos, Nigeria. Mental health among transgender women living with HIV in Canada: findings from a national community-based research study.

Antiretroviral therapy adherence among transgender (trans) women living with HIV (WLWH) is negatively impacted by depression and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Yet, little is known about factors associated with depression or PTSD among trans WLWH. Using cross-sectional data from a national community-based study of 1422 WLWH (n = 53 trans women), we characterized the prevalence of depressive and PTSD symptoms among trans WLWH and examined associations between factors (e.g., Trans stigma) and depressive and PTSD symptoms. Nearly half of participants reported clinically significant PTSD (

Lower Jaw Recontouring in Facial Gender-Affirming Surgery.

Facial gender-affirming surgery can have significant impact on patient quality of life for some gender-dysphoric patients. Lower jaw contouring can be used to harmonize the face during facial gender-affirming surgery through masculinization or feminization. During feminization, the mandibular angle and body and chin are reduced in width and size. During masculinization, augmentation of the mandibular angle and body and chin are completed with alloplastic implants, fat, or bone. Complications are minimal. Further research is needed on outcomes of these procedures.

Sex Education for Transgender and Non-Binary Youth: Previous Experiences and Recommended Content.

BACKGROUND: Transgender and non-binary (TNB) youth face disparities in sexual health risks compared with cisgender peers. Comprehensive sex education programs have the potential to result in delayed sexual debut, increased condom and contraceptive use, and reduced sexual risk-taking; however, little research has explored the specific sex education needs of TNB youth. AIM: To use insights from TNB youth, parents of TNB youth, and healthcare affiliates to understand deficits in sex education experienced by TNB youth, and to elicit recommended content for a comprehensive and trans-inclusive sex

Situated Vulnerabilities, Sexual Risk, and Sexually Transmitted Infections' Diagnoses in a Sample of Transgender Youth in the United States.

In the United States, sexually transmitted infections (STIs) confer significant morbidity in adolescents and young adults. STIs are not well characterized in transgender and other gender minority youth (TGMY) who have a gender identity that differs from the sex assigned to them at birth. This study sought to fill this gap. In 2015-2016, the Adolescent Medicine Trials Network for HIV/AIDS Interventions conducted Protocol 130, Affirming Voices for Action, enrolling a diverse sample of TGMY 16-24 years of age from 14 US geographic locations. Multivariable analyses regressed lifetime STI diagnosis

Effects of Gender-confirming Pitch-raising Surgery in Transgender Women a Long-term Follow-up Study of Acoustic and Patient-reported Data.

OBJECTIVES: Transgender women often seek to feminize their voice so that it becomes congruent with their gender identity. Many receive voice therapy (VT) with good results. Some also need pitch-raising surgery. The purpose of this study was to investigate long-term effects and to compare outcomes between cricothyroid approximation (CTA) and glottoplasty (GP). METHODS: This study included retrospective data from 24 patients (35-67 years). Eleven patients had undergone CTA and 13 had undergone GP. Audio recordings were performed in a sound-treated booth and patients answered questionnaires befo

Prescribing isotretinoin for transgender youth: A pledge for more inclusive care.

As the transgender community has become increasingly visible in public life, a greater awareness of this group's unique health needs and obstacles to optimal medical care has developed. Unfortunately, transgender youth face multiple barriers within the health care system, including access to equitable and gender-affirming care. As dermatologists who care for children and adolescents, we must be aware of the challenges facing transgender youth and work to correct the disparities that exist for this vulnerable group. An initial step in supporting our transgender patients is to advocate for chang
