[Imaging of osteoarticular tuberculosis].

PURPOSE: and methods. To perform an illustrated and educational review of musculoskeletal tuberculosis. RESULTS: As the incidence of musculoskeletal tuberculosis still increases, a review appears justified. The following four main presentations are detailed and illustrated, by emphasizing the value of both CT and MR imaging: a) spine tuberculosis (~ 50%) commonly involves two adjacent vertebral bodies with usual large paravertebral abscesses. The following lesions are highly suggestive of tuberculosis: solitary vertebral involvement, solitary epidural abscess with or without erosive spondylit

[CT-guided percutaneous drainage in the management of psoas abscesses].

The authors review their first experiences in Hungary with the CT guided percutaneous catheter treatment of psoas abscesses. Diagnostic aspiration from abscess was performed in one patient. Percutaneous catheter drainage of psoas abscess were performed in 4 patients. There were 4 patients with unilateral and 1 patient with bilateral psoas abscess. 4 patients had tuberculous spondylodiscitis, 1 patient had staphylococcal vertebral osteomyelitis. One patient following diagnostic aspiration was successfully treated with antituberculoutic drugs. All patient treated with percutaneous catheter drain

Minimally invasive far lateral debridement combined with posterior instrumentation for thoracic and lumbar tuberculosis without severe kyphosis.

BACKGROUND: Anti-tuberculous therapy (ATT) alone cannot easily cure spine tuberculosis (STB) though it is the most essential treatment. Many studies have confirmed the efficacy of the surgical treatment of STB through anterior, anterolateral, posterior debridement, and intervertebral fusion or combined with internal fixation. However, the conventional surgical approach requires extensive exposure of the affected areas with high rates of morbidity and mortality. Recently, minimally invasive surgery has come into use to reduce iatrogenic trauma and relevant complications. Here, we introduced a n

Late Mycobacterium bovis spondylitis after intravesical BCG therapy.

A 72-year-old man presented with a 6-month history of low back and leg pain. Past medical history revealed transurethral resection of bladder cancer followed by multiple intravesical BCG instillation 12 years ago. Imaging studies of the thoracolumbar spine showed osteolysis of the L3 and L4 vertebrae and the associated intervertebral disc space, and a large soft tissue mass with signal abnormalities suggesting of an abscess. CT-guided needle biopsy showed Mycobacterium bovis infection. A triple anti-tuberculous chemotherapy regimen including isoniazid, rifampicin, and ethambutol was administer

Prospective comparison of whole-body (18)F-FDG PET/CT and MRI of the spine in the diagnosis of haematogenous spondylodiscitis.

PURPOSE: To prospectively compare (18)F-FDG PET/CT and MRI in the diagnosis of haematogenous spondylodiscitis METHODS: The study included 26 patients (12 women, 14 men; mean age 59 ± 17 years) with clinical symptoms of infection of the spine. Patients who had had prior spinal surgery or any type of antibiotic therapy in the previous 3 months were excluded from the study. Whole-body PET/CT 60 min after injection of 4.07 MBq/kg of (18)F-FDG and an MRI scan of the spine was performed in all patients. SUVmax in an area surrounding the lesions with the suspicion of infection as well as a backgroun

Outcome Analysis of Anterior Reconstruction with Rib Grafts in Tuberculosis of the Thoracic Spine.

INTRODUCTION: Tricortical iliac bone is the gold standard as an autograft for the reconstruction of the anterior column in tuberculosis (TB) of the thoracic spine. However, the quantity of graft needed is significant. It creates a considerable defect in the pelvic bone, causing graft site complications, including pain, pelvic instability, fractured ilium, herniated muscle, or abdominal contents. To prevent these donor site morbidities, ribs that were removed during the versatile approach were used for anterior reconstruction. The aim of this study was to assess the clinical and radiological re

Clinical efficacy of three types of autogenous bone grafts in treatment of single-segment thoracic tuberculosis: A retrospective cohort study.

A retrospective study investigated and compared the results of lamina with spinous process (LSP), transverse process strut (TPS) and iliac graft (IG) as bone graft in thoracic single-segment spinal tuberculosis(TB) with the one-stage posterior approach of debridement, fusion and internal instrumentation. 99 patients treated from January 2012 to December 2015 were reviewed. LSP was performed in 35 patients (group A), TPS was undertaken in 33 patients (group B), and IG was carried out in 31 patients (group C). Surgical time, blood loss, hospitalization time, drainage volume, and follow-up (FU) d
