In the European Union the serological diagnosis of brucellosis caused by Brucella melitensis is performed using the heterologous antigen of B. abortus S99. The possible higher sensitivity or ability of an early detection of antibodies by a homologous antigen may prove very useful in the final phases of an eradication programme. The standard tube agglutination test (STAT) and the complement fixation test (CFT) were used to assess the seroprevalence of antibodies to Brucella spp. in caribou (Rangifer tarandus) from three populations on Baffin Island, Canada. During late winter from 1983 to 1986, sera from 17 of 40 North Baffin (43%), 11 of 33 Northeast Baffin (33%) and 12 of 82 South Baffin (15%) adult caribou had antibodies in the STAT at 1:50 or the CFT at 1:5. When assessed by a conventional plaque neutralization (NT) test, about one third of recipients of live mumps vaccine were found to have failed to seroconvert, although the majority of them became seropositive by the complement-mediated neutralization (CNT) test. Thirty-two patients with cysts caused by Echinococcus granulosus were treated with albendazole in a dosage of 10 mg/kg/day. Reversible abnormalities in liver-cell function tests were seen in five patients. Some radiological evidence of remission (on serial computed tomographic or ultrasound scanning) was seen in 15 of 22 patients undergoing a therapeutic course of albendazole (as opposed to those treated before or after surgery). The efficacy of zoster immunoglobulin in prophylaxis of varicella and herpes zoster is reported by many authors. The screening for zoster's antibodies is performed in the blood donor population and in persons convalescing from herpes zoster. The results show that 25 per cent of blood donors and 83.5 per cent of convalescents, respectively, have CF antibody titer of l6. Varicella zoster immunoglobulin prepared by alcohol fractionation has a fluorescent antibody titer of 1,024 and a CF antibody titer of 512. These results are discussed and compared with those of the literature.
