The protozoa E. histolytica is the etiologic agent of human amebiasis, the identification of its pathogenicity has been of great aid in the search of important antigens for immunodiagnostic and inmunoprofilaxis. We report a case of an amebic brain abscess in a 2-year-old girl, with symptoms mimicking bacterial meningitis with no evidence of disease elsewhere. Histological evaluation of the abscess revealed the organisms, and the abscess regressed in response to specific medical treatment. This article reviews the rarity of these abscesses and difficulty in the diagnosis.

Hepatogastric fistula secondary to amebic liver abscess is extremely rare. Only three pediatric cases have been reported in the English literature. Percutaneous drainage of abscess along with parenteral metronidazole can prevent the need for extensive surgical intervention. Timely intervention is usually followed by complete recovery.

Among 72 patients clinically suspected of Entamoeba histolytica (E. histolytica) infections, 39 positive cases (54%) were detected serologically by the indirect hemagglutination (IHA) test. The percutaneous, intrahepatic inoculation of E. histolytica trophozoites in weanling hamsters produced lesions of various shapes and sizes. The time-span between inoculation and sacrifice did not correlate with the size of the lesions.
