Legionella longbeachae is an emerging respiratory pathogen primarily found in soil environments, yet its genomic architecture and evolutionary strategies remain poorly characterized. Here, through pan-genomic and functional analysis of 242 L. longbeachae isolates, we reveal an open pan-genome driven by extensive horizontal gene transfer and marked functional divergence between core and accessory genomes. We identify a phylogenetically distinct lineage, designated as putative serogroup 3 (sg3), recovered from Chinese environments. This lineage diverges from canonical serogroups 1 and 2 through

The increasing emergence of drug-resistant fungal infections has necessitated a search for new compounds capable of combating fungal pathogens of plants, animals, and humans. Microorganisms represent the main source of antibiotics with applicability in agriculture and in the clinic, but many aspects of their metabolic potential remain to be explored. This report describes the discovery and characterization of a new antifungal compound, solanimycin, produced by a hybrid polyketide/nonribosomal peptide (PKS/NRPS) system in Dickeya solani, the enterobacterial pathogen of potato. Solanimycin was a

Fecal microbiota transplantation (FMT) has promising applications in reducing multidrug-resistant organism (MDRO) colonization and antibiotic resistance (AR) gene abundance. However, data on clinical microbiology results after FMT are limited. We examined the changes in antimicrobial susceptibility profiles in patients with Gram-negative infections in the year before and the year after treatment with FMT for recurrent Clostridioides difficile infection (RCDI). We also examined whether a history of FMT changed health care provider behavior with respect to culture ordering and antibiotic prescri

INTRODUCTION: Beef cattle, one of the food-producing animals, are linked to humans through a shared environment and the food chain as a major source of animal protein. Antimicrobial drugs are readily accessible for use in food animal production in Nigeria. Beef cattle and abattoir environments harbor pathogenic bacteria such as Escherichia coli (E. coli) which have developed resistance to antimicrobial agents used for prophylaxis or treatment. This study investigated the zoonotic transmission of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing E. coli (ESBL-EC) among humans, beef cattle, and abattoi

All extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Enterobacteriaceae isolates from patients admitted to and adult intensive care unit were prospectively documented from 2002 to 2005, when a large outbreak (51 patients affected) of multiresistant ESBL-producing Klebsiella pneumoniae infection was detected. The involvement of a single K. pneumoniae clone was demonstrated by pulsed-field gel electrophoresis. In addition to the ESBL-mediated resistance, the epidemic strain uniformly showed cross-resistance to ciprofloxacin, gentamicin, tobramycin, trimethoprim-sulfamethoxazole, and tetracyclin

UNLABELLED: In March 2026, an unusually large outbreak of invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) in Kent, UK, was linked to attendance at one nightclub over a single weekend. The outbreak organism was a Neisseria meningitidis variant belonging to the longstanding hyperinvasive genotype, cc41/44. Using genome analysis of six isolates from patients, alongside >48,000 meningococcal genomes, we investigated whether the outbreak variant had acquired traits potentially contributing to the highly invasive phenotype. The six isolates were capsular group B, sequence type (ST-)485, and essentially indisti

INTRODUCTION: Carbapenemase-producing bacteria undermine the efficacy of carbapenems, a class of last-resort antibiotics used primarily to treat infections caused by multidrug-resistant Gram-negative pathogens. Carbapenemases are among the most alarming antimicrobial resistance mechanisms because they inactivate all β-lactam antibiotics leaving clinicians with few or no therapeutic options. The genes encoding these enzymes are typically located on mobile genetic elements (MGE), which facilitate rapid horizontal gene transfer among different bacterial species. These MGE's often additionally car

UNLABELLED: Members of the genus Vibrio include many pathogens of humans and marine animals that share genetic information via horizontal gene transfer. Hence, the Vibrio pan-genome carries the potential to establish new pathogenic strains by sharing virulence determinants, many of which have yet to be characterized. Here, we investigated the virulence properties of Vibrio proteolyticus, a Gram-negative marine bacterium previously identified as part of the Vibrio consortium isolated from diseased corals. We found that V. proteolyticus causes actin cytoskeleton rearrangements followed by cell l

BACKGROUND: Since decades, fungi are leveraged in biotechnology to produce high-value compounds used in multiple economic sectors. Strain and process optimisation is based on a comprehensive understanding of the production organism on the cellular and molecular level. Among three antifungal protein families in fungi, consisting of small cysteine-stabilised proteins, it has been shown that, for some family members, bioactivities are also associated with additional functions in their hosts, e.g., carbon metabolism, autophagy, or asexual development. These proteins are interesting as alternative

Carbapenem-resistant Pseudomonas aeruginosa (CRPA) presents a serious clinical challenge due to limited treatment options. Ceftazidime-avibactam (CZA) is a critical last-resort agent against multidrug-resistant Gram-negative pathogens; however, resistance is emerging, particularly mediated by blaKPC variants. In this study, we investigated the prevalence and mechanisms of CZA resistance among CRPA isolates collected from two tertiary hospitals in Hangzhou between 2021 and 2022. A total of 273 non-duplicate CRPA isolates were screened, among which 13.9% (38/273) exhibited CZA resistance (MIC ≥

Escherichia coli is a public health threat capable of causing multiple types of infection, carrying a variety of antimicrobial resistance genes (ARGs), and disseminating ARGs to other microbes. Since ARG-carrying E. coli can exist as a commensal gut microbe, intestinal E. coli in community-associated (CA) members presents an under-appreciated reservoir of ARGs. We cultured 75 CA E. coli isolates from stool of 64 patients lacking inpatient healthcare exposures >24 hours in the previous 12 weeks. Remnant stool submitted to the Barnes-Jewish Hospital (BJH) microbiology laboratory for Clostridioid

BACKGROUND: Pseudomonas aeruginosa (P. aeruginosa) is a major cause of ocular infections, exhibiting resistance to many antimicrobial agents and the ability to acquire further resistance through mutations and horizontal gene transfer. It employs a range of virulence factors to invade ocular tissues, leading to complications such as corneal scarring and perforation. Alarmingly, multidrug-resistant P. aeruginosa isolates are increasing worldwide. For instance, a recent outbreak in the United States of America (USA) involving an extensively drug-resistant P. aeruginosa PA1270 strain resulted in f

We investigated the plant growth-promoting potential of two endophytic strains of Serratia marcescens, namely SmCNPMS2112 and SmUFMG85, which were isolated from the roots of the same maize (Zea mays) plant. The strains were evaluated in vitro for their ability to produce siderophores and indoleacetic acid, form biofilm, solubilize iron phosphate (Fe-P) and Araxá rock phosphate (RP), mineralize phytate, and for their ability to adhere and colonize host roots. Additionally, their plant growth-promoting potential was tested in vivo under greenhouse conditions using millet grown in soil under two

Metagenomic investigations have the potential to provide unprecedented insights into microbial ecologies, such as those relating to antimicrobial resistance (AMR). We characterized the microbial resistome in livestock operations raising cattle conventionally (CONV) or without antibiotic exposures (RWA) using shotgun metagenomics. Samples of feces, wastewater from catchment basins, and soil where wastewater was applied were collected from CONV and RWA feedlot and dairy farms. After DNA extraction and sequencing, shotgun metagenomic reads were aligned to reference databases for identification of

Species within the genus Neisseria are adept at sharing adaptive allelic variation, with commensal species repeatedly transferring resistance to their pathogenic relative Neisseria gonorrhoeae. However, resistance in commensals is infrequently characterized, limiting our ability to predict novel and potentially transferable resistance mechanisms that ultimately may become important clinically. Unique evolutionary starting places of each Neisseria species will have distinct genomic backgrounds, which may ultimately control the fate of evolving populations in response to selection as epistatic a

BACKGROUND: Plague, a zoonotic disease caused by Yersinia pestis, was responsible for 3 historical human pandemics that killed millions of people. It remains endemic in rodent populations in Africa, Asia, North America, and South America but human plague is rare in most of these locations. However, human plague is still highly prevalent in Madagascar, which typically records a significant part of all annual global cases. This has afforded an opportunity to study contemporary human plague in detail using various typing methods for Y. pestis.
AIM: This review aims to summarize the methods that

Carbapenem-resistant Enterobacterales (CRE) represent one of the most important antimicrobial resistance threats in Europe, particularly in healthcare settings. Their increasing epidemiological significance is driven by the dissemination of carbapenem-resistant Klebsiella pneumoniae, the emergence of high-risk clones, horizontal transfer of mobile genetic elements, and the convergence of antimicrobial resistance and hypervirulence. Despite the growing epidemiological importance of CRE, surveillance and preparedness remain heterogeneous across European countries, creating a need for a continent

Biofilms in drinking water distribution systems (DWDSs) are a determinant to drinking water biosafety. Yet, how and why pipe material and natural organic matter (NOM) affect biofilm microbial community, pathogen composition and antibiotic resistome remain unclear. We characterized the biofilms' activity, microbial community, antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), mobile genetic elements (MGEs) and pathogenic ARG hosts in Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) reactors with different NOM dosages and pipe materials based on metagenomics assembly. Biofilms in cast iron (CI) pipes exhibited

BACKGROUND: Resistance to third-generation cephalosporins, often mediated by extended-spectrum beta-lactamases (ESBLs), is a considerable issue in hospital-associated infections as few drugs remain for treatment. ESBL genes are often located on large plasmids that transfer horizontally between strains and species of Enterobacteriaceae and frequently confer resistance to additional drug classes. Whilst plasmid transmission is recognised to occur in the hospital setting, the frequency and impact of plasmid transmission on infection burden, compared to ESBL + strain transmission, is not well unde

Erysipelas, caused by the bacterium Erysipelothrix rhusiopathiae, is re-emerging in swine and poultry production systems worldwide. While the global genomic diversity of this species has been characterized, how much of this genomic and functional diversity is maintained at smaller scales is unclear. Specifically, while several key immunogenic surface proteins have been identified for E. rhusiopathiae, little is known about their presence among field strains and their divergence from vaccines, which could result in vaccine failure. Here, a comparative genomics approach was taken to determine th
