196 workers employed in the fish processing industry participated in a survey of skin disorders. 156 (80%) had experienced skin problems during their work with fish on some occasions. The symptoms were itching, redness and stinging. Latex surgical gloves may cause contact urticaria and serious allergic reactions in sensitized persons, but the frequency of this allergy is not known. In the present study, 512 hospital employees were screened with a latex-glove scratch-chamber test; 23 (4.5%) were suspected and 15 (2.9%) were proven allergic with latex prick and use tests. Skin disorders were reported in 33% of catering staff and 35% of women cleaners who returned a questionnaire, and were employed in a large hospital. Three comparable groups were studied : 100 patients with alcoholic cirrhosis, 100 alcoholics without cirrhosis, and 100 subjects without either alcoholism or cirrhosis. Mycosis fungoides (MF) is a low-grade cutaneous T-cell lymphoma characterized by skin-homing CD4- positive helper T cells. Mycosis fungoides palmaris et plantaris is an uncommon variant primarily involving the palms and soles. An 80-year old man presented with hyperkeratotic erythematous palmoplantar changes. Clinical and histopathologic criteria led to the diagnosis mycosis fungoides palmaris et plantaris. Tumor staging using sonography of the abdomen and lymph nodes, chest x-ray and blood examination is recommended, because extracutaneous manifestations may be present.

Bacterial skin infections are a common reason for children to be examined by a pediatrician. Streptococci and staphylococci are responsible for the great majority of the infections. Because of the variety of lesions produced by these bacteria, there is support for dividing impetigo into "traditional" crusted and bullous forms. Two important forms of cellulitis--facial and periorbital--have potential for serious systemic consequences. The bacterial etiology and treatment of cellulitis, animal bites, and puncture wounds of the foot require special attention for successful outcome.

Prompt diagnosis and treatment of hand and upper extremity infections is imperative because they have the potential to be life threatening and pose a risk of functional impairment. Serious infections may result in prolonged hospitalization and resultant loss of productivity. The mainstay of treatment continues to be antibiotic therapy, heat, elevation, adequate surgical drainage, and débridement. Prompt specialty consultation should be obtained in cases in which there is a doubt about the diagnosis or when there is failure to improve in the face of seemingly appropriate treatment.
