The aim of the present study was to examine the visuospatial perception, short-term working memory, and motor skills of children with special reading difficulties, using the Rey-Osterrieth Complex Figure, which can record visuomotor and memory skills, observe drawing processes, and detect deficiencies in specific skills. 306 right- and left-handed boys and girls, ages 6.6 to 9.6 yr. (102 with special reading difficulties, 102 normal readers, and 102 with general learning difficulties) comprised one experimental and two control groups, respectively. The task was to depict the Rey-Osterrieth Com

Neuroimaging studies have suggested that specific regions of the frontal and medial temporal cortex are engaged during memory formation. Further, there is specialization across these regions such that verbal materials appear to preferentially engage the left regions while nonverbal materials primarily engage the right regions. An open question, however, has been to what extent frontal regions contribute to successful memory formation. The present study investigates this question using a reversible lesion technique known as the Wada test. Patients memorized words and unfamiliar faces while port

Spatial memory deficits have been reported following prenatal alcohol exposure and animal studies have demonstrated hippocampal vulnerability to alcohol. This study examined spatial memory in children diagnosed with fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) or fetal alcohol effects (FAE) and matched controls. Spatial memory was examined with location recall measures. Since visual perceptual skills and nonspecific memory impairment could impact spatial memory, tasks assessing perception and verbal memory were administered. Analyses revealed group differences on perceptual and verbal and spatial memory tasks

This study investigates word and object processing during naming and viewing tasks and identifies three distinct regions in the left ventral occipitotemporal cortex. Irrespective of task, words and objects (relative to meaningless visual controls) activated the medial surface of the left anterior fusiform gyrus, a region that has previously been associated with semantic knowledge. A more lateral region was differentially active for naming words and objects relative to viewing the same stimuli and a more posterior region was differentially active for objects relative to words irrespective of ta

OBJECTIVE: Contrast sensitivity involves distinguishing threshold luminance differences and is usually assessed using static sine-wave gratings over a range of different spatial frequencies. The purpose of this study was to determine the effects of various levels of acute alcohol intoxication on contrast sensitivity to stationary and moving sine-wave gratings. Moving gratings required the subjects to make pursuit eye movements. A secondary goal was to investigate whether any alcohol-related effects were associated with any measures of intoxication.
METHOD: Male volunteers (N = 8) participated

Pattern recognition methods were carried out on a sample of 80 depressed men, assessed by means of 14 items relevant to depressive symptomatology of the Structured Clinical Interview for DSM-III-R. 1985 edition (SCID). A cluster analysis generated two classes, which were described as a vital (n = 35) and a nonvital cluster (n = 45). Vital depressives were characterized by psychomotor disorders, loss of energy, cognitive disturbances, a distinct quality of mood, early morning awakening and nonreactivity (the "vital" symptoms). Our findings support the descriptive validity of the DSM-III melanch

Establishing the precise relationship between anterograde amnesia (AA) and retrograde amnesia (RA) has implications for psychological and neuroanatomical models of memory. Many patients have been described who demonstrate AA in conjunction with RA or who demonstrate AA with little, or no apparent, RA. Intact anterograde memory in conjunction with deficits on tasks of retrograde memory is rarely encountered. In this paper, we describe a young female patient (LD) whose RA is extremely severe when contrasted with her mild to moderate deficits on tasks of verbal anterograde memory. In addition, on

This study investigated developmental changes in children's abilities to comprehend visual metaphors as measured by their use of verbal metaphor. The visual metaphors were compound objects, e.g., a top with features of a ballerina (head and skirt). 30 participants at each of 4 ages--5, 7, 10, and adult--described objects ordered in pairs; half described standard objects and the other half corresponding compound objects (half stationary, and half moving, e.g., spinning). Total metaphoric descriptions reached the adult frequency by age 7 for compound objects, but increased from 5 to 10 to adult

Recent models of face recognition have proposed that the names of familiar people are accessed from a lexical memory store that is distinct from the semantic memory store that holds information about such things as a familiar person's occupation and personality. Names are nevertheless retrieved via the semantic system. If such models are correct, then it should be possible for a patient to have full access to semantic information about familiar people while being unable to name many of them. We report this pattern in an anomic aphasic patient, EST, whose inability to recall the names of famili

The case of a man with a right hemisphere lesion and with evidence of left-sided visuospatial neglect is reported. On a variety of verbal and nonverbal tasks his performance was significantly modified by information implicit in stimulus configurations. Neglect deficits were present on tests involving spatially distinct or meaningless stimulus arrays but almost absent when stimuli were continuous or meaningfully integrated.

Much research investigating the neuropsychological underpinnings of reading disabilities has emphasized posterior brain regions. However, recent evidence indicates that prefrontal cortex may also play a role. This study investigated cognitive processes that are associated with prefrontal and posterior brain functions. Subjects were 12-year-old reading disabled and nondisabled boys. Discriminant analysis procedures indicated that measures of prefrontal functions distinguished between the two groups better than measures of posterior functions. The results suggest that reading disabled boys have

Several recent functional neuroimaging studies have reported robust bilateral activation (L>R) in lateral posterior parietal cortex and precuneus during recognition memory retrieval tasks. It has not yet been determined what cognitive processes are represented by those activations. In order to examine whether parietal lobe-based processes are necessary for basic episodic recognition abilities, we tested a group of 17 first-incident CVA patients whose cortical damage included (but was not limited to) extensive unilateral posterior parietal lesions. These patients performed a series of tasks tha

The performance of two patients with visual agnosia was compared across a number of tests examining visual processing. The patients were distinguished by having dorsal and medial ventral extrastriate lesions. While inanimate objects were disadvantaged for the patient with a dorsal extrastriate lesion, animate items are disadvantaged for the patient with the medial ventral extrastriate lesion. The patients also showed contrasting patterns of performance on the Navon Test: The patient with a dorsal extrastriate lesion demonstrated a local bias while the patient with a medial ventral extrastriate

Reading Chinese characters places high demands on visual processing. Children with reading difficulties (RD) often show weaknesses in visual attention that may hinder character recognition. This study compared the eye movements of Chinese children with and without RD during a timed orthographic similarity judgment task involving simple and complex characters. Fourteen children with RD and 16 typically developing (TD) peers (aged 9-12 years, primary 4-6) in Hong Kong SAR participated. Accuracy, reaction time, and eye-movement measures (number of fixations, total fixation duration, number of sac

The selection of appropriate lexical entries constitutes a crucial stage in the process of speech production. The theories of lexical choice competition and the hypothesis of response exclusion both propose that inhibitory control might play a significant role in handling cognitive conflicts arising from lexical selection. Previous studies have utilized transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) to enhance speech function in individuals by primarily targeting stimulation on the left inferior frontal gyrus (IFG). However, the effects of this intervention have been inconsistent in healthy in

BACKGROUND: While previous studies have demonstrated a complex visual scene search elicits a robust neurovascular coupling (NVC) response, it is unknown how the duration of visual stimuli presentation influences NVC metrics. This study examined how stimuli duration, in addition to biological sex and self-reported engagement impact NVC responses.
METHODS: Participants (n = 20, female = 10) completed four visual paradigms. Three involved simple visual shapes presented at 0.5-, 2-, and 4-s intervals in randomized orders. The fourth paradigm was a complex visual scene search ("Where's Waldo?"). P

Previous work has shown that healthy individuals can actively suppress emotional memories through recruitment of the lateral prefrontal cortex. By contrast, individuals with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) frequently experience unwanted memories of their traumatic experiences, even when making explicit efforts to avoid them. However, little is known regarding the behavioral and neural effects of memory suppression among individuals with PTSD. We examined memory suppression associated with PTSD using the Think-No-Think paradigm in an event-related functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMR

The Landolt paradigm is a visual scanning task intended to evoke reading-like eye-movements in the absence of orthographic or lexical information, thus allowing the dissociation of (sub-) lexical vs. visual processing. To that end, all letters in real word sentences are exchanged for closed Landolt rings, with 0, 1, or 2 open Landolt rings as targets in each Landolt sentence. A preliminary fMRI block-design study (Hillen et al. in Front Hum Neurosci 7:1-14, 2013) demonstrated that the Landolt paradigm has a special neural signature, recruiting the right IPS and SPL as part of the endogenous at

This study aimed to investigate the performance on pair-matching tasks in children with Spinal Muscular Atrophy type I (SMA-I) and the relationship between this performance and motor function, functional independence and quality of life. SMA-I (n = 12; 6.0 ± 2.3 yrs; 9 boys, 3 girls) and control sex-, age-matched children (n = 12; 6.2 ± 2.6 yrs) performed four pair-matching figure, number and letter tasks. The eye tracker detected eye movements. SMA-I children were assessed with CHOP INTEND, Pediatric Evaluation of Disability Inventory, and Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory. Analysis of vari

Detecting regularities in the sensory environment licenses predictions that enable adaptive behaviour. However, it is unclear whether predictions about object category, location, or both dimensions are mediated by overlapping systems, and relatedly, whether constructing predictions about both category and location is associated with processing bottlenecks. To examine this issue, in an fMRI study, we presented participants with image-series in which non-deterministic transition probabilities enabled predictions about either the location of the next image, its semantic category, both dimensions,
