Adjunctive intranasal oxytocin improves verbal memory in people with schizophrenia.

INTRODUCTION: Cognitive deficits are a prominent, disabling component of schizophrenia and current pharmacological treatments have demonstrated limited efficacy in their amelioration. Oxytocin - though it has shown promise as a novel antipsychotic in multiple clinical trials - has as-yet poorly characterized effects on cognition, with some evidence indicating an amnestic profile. METHOD: As part of a previously reported trial of chronic adjunctive oxytocin in schizophrenia, we measured its effect on two cognitive tests: the CVLT (California Verbal Learning Test) and the LNS (Letter Number Seq…

Nonword repetition: the relative contributions of phonological short-term memory and phonological representations in children with language and reading impairment.

PURPOSE: This study investigates the relative contributions of phonological short-term memory and phonological representations to nonword repetition (NWR). This was evaluated in children with specific language impairment (SLI) and/or reading impairment (RI); it was also studied from a developmental perspective by comparing 2 groups of typically developing (TD) children who differed in age. METHOD: NWR, digit span, vocabulary, and word and nonword discrimination were tested in 2 groups of TD children: one group matched on chronological age (CA TD group: n = 41, mean age = 7;8 [months;years]),

A longitudinal study of early reading difficulties and subsequent problem behaviors.

It is generally believed that early academic failure in school develops into a downward spiral of negative motivational and behavioral consequences. In this study, children with reading difficulties were compared with typical readers on questionnaires measuring ADHD symptoms and other behavior problems such as withdrawn symptoms, somatic complaints, anxiety/depression, social problems, and aggression. The results revealed that reading difficulties and problem behaviors appear more independent of each other rather than problem behaviors being a consequence of reading failure. In addition, gende

Developmental trajectories from birth to school age in healthy term-born children.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the stability of the scores obtained on tests of motor development from birth until school age in healthy, term singletons and to determine if early motor scores are associated with more complex cognitive functions at school age, such as attention and memory. PATIENTS AND METHODS: This longitudinal, prospective cohort study included 77 infants. The motor development of these infants was assessed during the neonatal period with Prechtl's neurologic examination; in early infancy with Touwen's neurologic examination and general movement assessment; at toddler age with Hem

An exploratory study of phonological awareness and working memory differences and literacy performance of people that use AAC.

Twelve cerebral palsied adolescents and young adults with complex communicative needs who used augmentative and alternative communication were studied. They were classified according to their working memory capacity (high vs. low) into two groups of 6 participants. They were also divided into two groups of 6 participants according to their high vs. low phonological skills. These groups were compared on their performance in reading tests -orthographic knowledge, a word test and a pseudoword reading test- and in the spelling of words, pseudowords and pictures' names. Statistical differences were

The improvement of reading skills of L1 and ESL children using a Response to Intervention (RtI) Model.

This study examined the development of literacy skills in children in a district that used a Response to Intervention (RTI) model. The district included children whose first language was English and children who were learning English as a second language (ESL). Tasks measuring phonological awareness, lexical access, and syntactic awareness were administered when the children entered school in kindergarten at age 5. Reading, phonological processing, syntactic awareness, memory, and spelling were administered in grade 7. When the children entered school, significant numbers of them were at risk

Forgetting due to retroactive interference: a fusion of Müller and Pilzecker's (1900) early insights into everyday forgetting and recent research on anterograde amnesia.

Ebbinghaus' seminal work suggested that forgetting occurred as a function of time. However, it raised a number of fundamental theoretical issues that still have not been resolved in the literature. Müller and Pilzecker (1900) addressed some of these issues in a remarkable manner but their observations have been mostly ignored in recent years. Müller and Pilzecker (1900) showed that the materials and the task that intervene between presentation and recall may interfere with the to-be-remembered items, and they named this phenomenon "retroactive interference" (RI). They further asked whether the

Moyamoya disease in a patient with schizophrenia.

We present the case of a 23-year-old Vietnamese male with a 2-year history of a psychotic illness marked by prominent negative symptoms, fatuousness and disturbed behavior. Neuroimaging revealed a prominent vascular flow void affecting the middle and anterior cerebral arteries, with associated increased collateral supply to the frontal cortex, consistent with Moyamoya disease. Neurological examination was unremarkable; however, neuropsychological assessment revealed significant executive dysfunction, including stimulus-driven behavior. Whilst the diagnosis of schizophrenia and Moyamoya disease

Amnesia following infarction in the right retrosplenial region.

We present a case of retrosplenial amnesia following an infarction in the right retrosplenial region. A 62-year-old male showed mild weakness of the left hand, dizziness and gait disturbance. He also noticed that he could not perceive objects that he saw as real, but could perceive an object as real only by touching it. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) showed an infarction in the splenium of the corpus callosum and retrosplenial region on the right side. There was no aphasia or apraxia, but mild topographic disturbance was present. Intelligence was normal, but amnesia was noted. Both verbal an

Visual repetition priming for words relies on access to the visual input lexicon: evidence from a dyslexic patient.

In this study we tested the hypothesis that visual repetition priming for words depends upon the accessibility of lexical units in the visual input lexicon. For this purpose, we investigated a dyslexic patient, A.M., whose neuropsychological performances suggested an impaired access to the lexical route of reading. According to the predictions, Experiments 1 and 2 demonstrated deficient priming in tests involving the visual presentation of words (Word Identification and Stem Completion). In Experiment 3, we demonstrated that A.M.'s deficient priming was specific for visually presented words, i

SACM: SEEG-Audio Contrastive Matching for Chinese Speech Decoding.

OBJECTIVE: Speech disorders such as dysarthria and anarthria can severely impair patients' ability to communicate verbally. Speech decoding brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) offer a potential alternative by directly translating speech intentions into spoken words, serving as speech neuroprostheses. METHODS: This paper reports an experimental protocol for Mandarin Chinese speech decoding BCIs and proposes a contrastive learning-based decoding algorithm termed SEEG and Audio Contrastive Matching (SACM). Stereo-electroencephalography (SEEG) and synchronized audio data were collected from ten pati

On the Design of Broad-Based Neuropsychological Test Batteries to Assess the Cognitive Abilities of Individuals with Down Syndrome in the Context of Clinical Trials.

Down syndrome (DS) is the most common genetically-defined cause of intellectual disability. Neurodevelopmental deficits displayed by individuals with DS are generally global, however, disproportionate deficits in cognitive processes that depend heavily on the hippocampus and prefrontal cortex are also well documented. Additionally, DS is associated with relative strengths in visual processing and visuospatial short-term memory, and weaknesses in the verbal domain. Although reports of pharmacological rescuing of learning and memory deficits in mouse models of DS abound in the literature, provin

Counterfactual thinking in Tourette's syndrome: a study using three measures.

Pathophysiological evidence suggests an involvement of frontostriatal circuits in Tourette syndrome (TS) and cognitive abnormalities have been detected in tasks sensitive to cognitive deficits associated with prefrontal damage (verbal fluency, planning, attention shifting, working memory, cognitive flexibility, and social reasoning). A disorder in counterfactual thinking (CFT), a behavioural executive process linked to the prefrontal cortex functioning, has not been investigated in TS. CFT refers to the generation of a mental simulation of alternatives to past factual events, actions, and outc

Haptic perception of texture gradients.

To pick up 3-D aspects of pictures is arguably the most difficult problem concerning tactile pictorial perception by the blind. The aim of the experiments reported was to examine the potential utility of texture gradients in this context. Since there is no theoretical basis for predicting absolute values of 3-D properties from 2-D patterns read by the finger pads, the abilities of participants to perceive gradients lying between known maxima and minima were assessed. Experiment 1 involved blindfolded sighted participants making verbal magnitude estimations of texture-gradient magnitudes corres

The memory function of noradrenergic activity in non-REM sleep.

There is a long-standing assumption that low noradrenergic activity during sleep reflects mainly the low arousal during this brain state. Nevertheless, recent research has demonstrated that the locus coeruleus, which is the main source of cortical noradrenaline, displays discrete periods of intense firing during non-REM sleep, without any signs of awakening. This transient locus coeruleus activation during sleep seems to occur in response to preceding learning-related episodes. In the present study, we manipulate noradrenergic activity during sleep in humans with either the α2-autoreceptor ago

Early concurrent and longitudinal symptoms of ADHD and ODD: relations to different types of inhibitory control and working memory.

BACKGROUND: The aim of the present study was to investigate how three different types of inhibitory control - interference control within task, interference control outside task, and prepotent response inhibition - and two types of working memory - verbal and spatial - would relate to early symptoms of attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and oppositional defiant disorder (ODD), both concurrently and longitudinally. METHODS: Seventy-two preschoolers, 1/3 who had been identified as being at risk for developing ADHD and/or ODD, completed neuropsychological tasks designed to measure i
