Effects of hypergravity on the gene expression of the hypothalamic feeding-related neuropeptides in mice via vestibular inputs.

The effects of hypergravity on the gene expression of the hypothalamic feeding-related neuropeptides in sham-operated (Sham) and vestibular-lesioned (VL) mice were examined by in situ hybridization histochemistry. Corticotrophin-releasing hormone (CRH) in the paraventricular nucleus was increased significantly in Sham but not in VL mice after 3 days of exposure to a 2 g environment compared with a 1 g environment. Significant decreases in pro-opiomelanocortin (POMC) and cocaine- and amphetamine-regulated transcript and significant increases in neuropeptide Y, agouti-related protein in the arcu

Comparison of linear motion perception thresholds in vestibular migraine and Menière's disease.

Linear motion perceptual thresholds (PTs) were compared between patients with Menière's disease (MD) and vestibular migraine (VM). Twenty patients with VM, 27 patients with MD and 34 healthy controls (HC) were examined. PTs for linear motion along the inter-aural (IA), naso-occipital axes (NO), and head-vertical (HV) axis were measured using a multi-axis motion platform. Ocular and cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (o/c VEMP) were performed and the dizziness handicap inventory (DHI) administered. In order to discriminate between VM and MD, we also evaluated the diagnostic accuracy

In vivo analysis of Lrig genes reveals redundant and independent functions in the inner ear.

Lrig proteins are conserved transmembrane proteins that modulate a variety of signaling pathways from worm to humans. In mammals, there are three family members - Lrig1, Lrig2, and Lrig3--that are defined by closely related extracellular domains with a similar arrangement of leucine rich repeats and immunoglobulin domains. However, the intracellular domains show little homology. Lrig1 inhibits EGF signaling through internalization and degradation of ErbB receptors. Although Lrig3 can also bind ErbB receptors in vitro, it is unclear whether Lrig2 and Lrig3 exhibit similar functions to Lrig1. To

Results of caloric and sensory organization testing of dynamic posturography in migrainous vertigo: comparison with Meniere's disease and vestibular neuritis.

CONCLUSION: Our findings suggest that migrainous vertigo (MV) has a substantial vestibulo-spinal abnormality that can be uncovered by posturography. Patients with MV also showed a difficulty in using multisystem information, especially somatosensory information. Caloric and sensory organization tests (SOTs) have complementary roles in assessing vestibulo-ocular and vestibulo-spinal function, particularly for Meniere's disease (MD) and MV. OBJECTIVES: To compare vestibular dysfunction through caloric testing and posturography in patients with MV, MD, and acute vestibular neuritis (VN). METHOD

Ménière's disease in children aged 4-7 years.

This is a retrospective review of clinical data and audiovestibular test results from four children in whom symptoms suggesting Ménière's disease started at 4-7 years of age. The four patients all had spontaneous recurrent attacks of (spinning) vertigo and fluctuating low frequency sensorineural hearing loss from an early age, suggesting a diagnosis of definite Ménière's disease. Presumably, due to age-related inability to communicate auditory symptoms, the children did not initially meet requirements for a diagnosis of Ménière's disease. However, by 8 years of age, all four children reported

Review of first trial responses in balance control: influence of vestibular loss and Parkinson's disease.

The reaction to an unexpected balance disturbance is unpracticed, often startling and frequently associated with falls. This everyday situation can be reproduced in an experimental setting by exposing standing humans to sudden, unexpected and controlled movements of a support surface. In this review, we focus on the responses to the very first balance perturbation, the so-called first trial reactions (FTRs). Detailed analysis of FTRs may have important implications, both for clinical practice (providing new insights into the pathophysiological mechanisms underlying accidental falls in real lif

Effects of repetition rate of bone-conducted vibration on ocular and cervical vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials.

OBJECTIVE: This study applied bone-conducted vibration (BCV) stimuli at various repetition rates to investigate the effects of repetition rate on both ocular and cervical vestibular-evoked myogenic potentials (oVEMPs and cVEMPs). METHODS: Twenty-five healthy subjects underwent oVEMP tests in BCV mode at repetition rates of 1, 5, 10, 20, 30 and 40Hz. The optimal repetition rates (5, 10 and 20Hz) for oVEMPs were also adopted to elicit cVEMPs, and 20Hz stimuli were further evaluated in pathological ears. RESULTS: At repetition rates of 1, 5, 10, 20, 30 and 40Hz, the prevalence of clear oVEMPs w

The vestibular evoked-potential profile of Ménière's disease.

OBJECTIVE: To define the ocular and cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potential (oVEMP and cVEMP) profile in Ménière's Disease (MD), we studied air-conducted (AC) sound and bone-conducted vibration (BCV)-evoked responses in 77 patients and 35 controls. METHODS: oVEMPs were recorded from unrectified infra-orbital surface electromyography (EMG) during upward gaze. cVEMPs were recorded from rectified and unrectified sternocleidomastoid EMG during head elevation against gravity. Responses to AC clicks delivered via headphones and BC forehead taps delivered with a mini-shaker (bone-conduction vi

Postural responses triggered by multidirectional leg lifts and surface tilts.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the relationship between proactive and reactive components of postural control. We contrasted the kinematic and electromyographic (EMG) responses to multidirectional voluntary leg lifts with those elicited by unexpected surface tilts. In particular, we addressed the role of trunk stabilization following either a voluntary or forced weight shift from double to single limb support. Nine young female subjects stood with a standing posture of 45 degrees toe-out and their arms abducted to shoulder level. On the experimenter's signal, subjects either (

Aging effect on vestibular evoked myogenic potential.

OBJECTIVE: Vestibular evoked myogenic potential (VEMP) is applied to explore the integrity of sacculocollic reflex. Although tests to evaluate vestibular-ocular reflex pathway have shown that vestibular function is adversely affected by aging, VEMP, in this study, is used as a novel test to define how aging influences sacculocollic reflex pathway. STUDY DESIGN: Prospective study. SETTING: Academic tertiary referral center. SUBJECTS: Eighty normal subjects, equally divided into four groups according to their age, were enrolled to this study. Group I included patients aged <20 years, Group II

Gradual and reversible central vestibular reorganization in frog after selective labyrinthine nerve branch lesions.

Postlesional reorganization of vestibular afferent and commissural inputs onto second-order vestibular neurons was studied in the isolated brain after unilateral section of the N.VIII, of the ramus anterior (RA) of N.VIII, of the utricular (UT) or of the anterior vertical and horizontal canal nerves in combination. RA nerve section eliminated the inputs from utricular, anterior vertical and horizontal canal organs. In the first set of experiments we recorded field potentials on the operated side of the vestibular nuclei 2 months after RA nerve section. These responses were evoked by electrical

[Labyrinthectomy with preservation of the cochlear duct and a reconstruction of the lateral wall in the vestibule].

The authors described a technique and presented the results of the modified labyrinthectomy in 9 cases. A labyrinthectomy was performed during the removal of neuromas by translabirynthine approach, in advanced unilateral Meniere disease, in a huge perylimphatic fistula and in a case of labyrinthitis latens. In 3 cases of the neuromas removal the residual hearing was preserved. In remained cases of labyrinthectomy hearing was preserved partially.

Visuo-vestibular biofeedback in patients with peripheral vestibular disorders.

It is well known that diseases of the vestibular system can be compensated by increased spontaneous activity of other systems engaged in maintaining equilibrium, i.e. proprioceptive and visual systems. A complex approach using multisensory stimulation is the optimal way to achieve vestibular compensation. The aim of our study was to determine the effect of vestibular rehabilitation therapy as measured by posturography in a group of 72 patients suffering from vestibular disorders: Ménière's disease (n = 31), neuritis vestibularis (n = 21) and vertebrobasilar insufficiency (n = 20). Patients und

Three types of depolarization-activated potassium currents in acutely isolated mouse vestibular neurons.

The nature and electrophysiological properties of Ca(2+)-independent depolarization-activated potassium currents were investigated in vestibular primary neurons acutely isolated from postnatal mice using the whole cell configuration of the patch-clamp technique. Three types of currents were identified. The first current, sensitive to TEA (I(TEA)) and insensitive to 4-aminopyridine (4-AP), activated at -40 mV and exhibited slow activation (tau(ac), 38.4 +/- 7.8 ms at -30 mV, mean +/- SD). I(TEA) had a half activation potential [V(ac(1/2))] of -14.5 +/- 2.6 mV and was inactivated by up to 84.5 +

Cholinergic influence on vestibular stimulation-induced locus coeruleus inhibition in rats.

In our previous study, caloric stimulation (CS) of the vestibular apparatus inhibited noradrenergic neuronal activity in the locus coeruleus (LC) in urethane-anaesthetized rats. Therefore, the inhibition of LC noradrenergic neurons is involved in vestibulo-autonomic responses. Since motion sickness can be cured by scopolamine, cholinergic neuron system may also be involved in vestibulo-autonomic responses. The present study examined the effects of intracerebroventricular injection of ethylcholine mustard aziridinium ion (AF64A), a presynaptic cholinergic neurotoxin, on CS-induced LC inhibition

[Subablative gentamycin therapy in Menière's disease].

We have treated 20 patients suffering from unilateral Morbus Meniere (2 x 12 mg gentamicin for 7 days). These patients were controlled for 24 months. In 95% we regarded a complete or substantial control of definitive spells ("American Committee on Hearing and Equilibrium guidelines for reporting treatment results in Meniere's disease", Otolaryngol. Head and Neck Surg. 10/19-85). Only 1 patient with pretherapeutic equal caloric response showed a post-therapeutic destroyed vestibular apparatus on the treated ear. In the other 7 patients (35%), who had a loss of vestibular function after therapy,
