A deep learning model for predicting systemic lupus erythematosus-associated epitopes.

BACKGROUND: The accurate prediction of epitopes associated with Systemic Lupus Erythematosus (SLE) plays a vital role in advancing our understanding of autoimmune pathogenesis and in designing effective immunotherapeutics. Traditional bioinformatics methods often struggle to capture the intricate sequence patterns and high-dimensional signals characteristic of epitope data. Deep learning presents a compelling alternative, with its ability to perform automatic feature learning and model complex dependencies inherent in biological sequences. This study proposes a hybrid deep learning architectur

Cyber crime: can a standard risk analysis help in the challenges facing business continuity managers?

Risk management has never been easy. Finding efficient mitigating measures is not always straightforward. Finding measures for cyber crime, however, is a really huge challenge because cyber threats are changing all the time. As the sophistication of these threats is growing, their impact increases. Moreover, society and its economy have become increasingly dependent on information and communication technologies. Standard risk analysis methodologies will help to score the cyber risk and to place it in the risk tolerance matrix. This will allow business continuity managers to figure out if there

How is cyber threat evolving and what do organisations need to consider?

Organisations and members of the public are becoming accustomed to the increasing velocity, frequency and variety of cyber-attacks that they have been facing over the last few years. In response to this challenge, it is important to explore what can be done to offer commercial and private users a reliable and functioning environment. This paper discusses how cyber threats might evolve in the future and seeks to explore these threats more fully. Attention is paid to the changing nature of cyber-attackers and their motivations and what this means for organisations. Finally, useful and actionable

Neuroscience, virtual reality and neurorehabilitation: brain repair as a validation of brain theory.

This paper argues that basing cybertherapy approaches on a theoretical understanding of the brain has advantages. On one hand it provides for a rational approach towards therapy design while on the other allowing for a direct validation of brain theory in the clinic. As an example this paper discusses how the Distributed Adaptive Control architecture, a theory of mind, brain and action, has given rise to a new paradigm in neurorehabilitation called the Rehabilitation Gaming System (RGS) and to novel neuroprosthetic systems. The neuroprosthetic system considered is developed to replace the func

Security infrastructure requirements for electronic health cards communication.

Communication and co-operation processes in the healthcare and welfare domain require a security infrastructure based on services describing status and relation of communicating principals as well as corresponding keys and attributes. Additional services provide trustworthy information on dynamic issues of communication and co-operation such as time and location of processes, workflow relations, integrity of archives and record systems, and system behaviour. To provide this communication and co-operation in a shared care environment, smart cards are widely used. Serving as storage media and po

Volatile self-selective memristive neuron for millisecond-latency neuromorphic object detection at the edge.

The deployment of artificial intelligence for real-time object detection in edge applications is constrained by the power and latency limitations of conventional computing architectures. Here we show a bio-inspired neuromorphic system built around a self-selective GaOx/ZnO memristor to address this challenge. The device exhibits a selection ratio and nonlinearity (both of ~10⁷), picoampere-level leakage currents, and microsecond-scale volatile dynamics. We integrate these memristors into a 32×32 array emulating the first-spike-time-coding mechanism of the frog visual system, enabling milliseco

Reconfigurable Nonvolatile Photodetectors for Brain-Inspired Vision.

Machine vision serves as the essential sensorial interface for intelligent systems, yet conventional vision systems based on the von Neumann architecture suffer from significant latency and high power consumption due to the physical separation of sensing and processing units. To address these bottlenecks, neuromorphic vision systems inspired by the efficient, localized processing of the human retina have emerged. As a core paradigm of in-sensor computing, reconfigurable nonvolatile photodetectors (RNVPs) that integrate photodetection, nonvolatile memory, and processing into a single device rep

From traits to trades: Empathizing and systemizing map onto data-driven occupation dimensions.

Empathizing-systemizing theory suggests people differ in their drives to understand others' emotions (empathizing) and rule-based systems (systemizing). Prior studies report that individuals with higher systemizing compared to empathizing scores are more likely to work in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM), but have relied on broad occupational categories that obscure variation within and between fields. To address this limitation, we used the Visualization of Latent Components Assessed in O*NET Occupations (VOLCANO) tool to examine how empathizing and systemizing traits

An Adaptive Optimization Spiking Neural P System for Binary Problems.

Optimization Spiking Neural P System (OSNPS) is the first membrane computing model to directly derive an approximate solution of combinatorial problems with a specific reference to the 0/1 knapsack problem. OSNPS is composed of a family of parallel Spiking Neural P Systems (SNPS) that generate candidate solutions of the binary combinatorial problem and a Guider algorithm that adjusts the spiking probabilities of the neurons of the P systems. Although OSNPS is a pioneering structure in membrane computing optimization, its performance is competitive with that of modern and sophisticated metaheur

A programmed feedback control of solvent vapour concentrations in experimental inhalation chambers.

This paper describes a computer-controlled system to regulate solvent vapour concentrations in experimental inhalation devices. This system consists of an exposure chamber, a bubbler with a mass flow-meter, a monitor gas chromatograph and a computer. The frequency of automatic sampling was dependent upon the retention time of test materials. Flow-rate was corrected through a computer regulated bubbler as soon as the mean chamber concentration varied by more than 2.5% of a command level. Regulation coefficients were calculated by relating the concentration of vapours sampled with adsorbent tube

From Device-Level Implementation to In-Sensor Computing in Memristive-Device-Based Biosensors: A Review.

Memristive devices have attracted considerable attention as promising candidates for overcoming the energy and data-transfer limitations of conventional computing architectures. In particular, their integration with biosensors offers a pathway toward compact and energy-efficient diagnostic systems. This review examines the development of memristive-device-based biosensors from device-level transduction to system-level integration. At the device level, sensing strategies have evolved from direct sensing toward indirect sensing architectures, improving stability and reusability. At the system le

Mathematical modeling based on ordinary differential equations: A promising approach to vaccinology.

New contributions that aim to accelerate the development or to improve the efficacy and safety of vaccines arise from many different areas of research and technology. One of these areas is computational science, which traditionally participates in the initial steps, such as the pre-screening of active substances that have the potential to become a vaccine antigen. In this work, we present another promising way to use computational science in vaccinology: mathematical and computational models of important cell and protein dynamics of the immune system. A system of Ordinary Differential Equation

Finite-Size Effects of Binary Mutual Diffusion Coefficients from Molecular Dynamics.

Molecular dynamics simulations were performed for the prediction of the finite-size effects of Maxwell-Stefan diffusion coefficients of molecular mixtures and a wide variety of binary Lennard-Jones systems. A strong dependency of computed diffusivities on the system size was observed. Computed diffusivities were found to increase with the number of molecules. We propose a correction for the extrapolation of Maxwell-Stefan diffusion coefficients to the thermodynamic limit, based on the study by Yeh and Hummer ( J. Phys. Chem. B , 2004 , 108 , 15873 - 15879 ). The proposed correction is a functi

[Computer-assisted planning of corrective osteotomies in cases of epiphysiolysis capitis femoris].

Slipped capital femoral epiphysis (SCFE) leads to an unphysiologic function in adolescent hips. Evaluation of the slippage as well planning of corrective osteotomies is a major three-dimensional (3D) problem. Therefore, the current clinical evaluation, which is based on biplanar plain radiographs, cannot be satisfying. More is needed than simply measuring the femoral geometry to evaluate the impact of a slippage onto the physiologic hip function. We have developed a computer-based system for planning and evaluation of reorienting osteotomies in severe cases of SCFE. In our system, CT-based 3D

A cloud-based electronic medical record for scheduling, tracking, and documenting examinations and treatment of retinopathy of prematurity.

BACKGROUND: Screening by neonatologists and staging by ophthalmologists is a cost-effective intervention, but inadvertent missed examinations create a high liability. METHODS: Paper tracking, bedside schedule reminders, and a computer scheduling and reminder program were compared for speed of input and retrospective missed examination rate. A neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) process was then programmed for cloud-based distribution for inpatient and outpatient retinopathy of prematurity monitoring. RESULTS: Over 11 years, 367 premature infants in one NICU were prospectively monitored. The

Computer-assisted surgery planning for lower extremity deformity correction by the Ilizarov method.

Starting in 1952, Prof. Gavril Ilizarov, a Russian orthopedic surgeon, devised a complex method of long bone deformity correction using an external bone fixation system consisting of rings and wires. We have developed a computer-assisted surgery planning system to aid in correction using the Ilizarov method. The hardware for the system is composed of an ultrasonic digitizer as input device, an HI plotter as output device, a 386/486 personal computer with super VGA monitor, and a mouse interfacing between user and computer. The software includes two separate programs. The main program is a menu
