Temporal DIA-MS proteomics reveals coordinated metabolic reprogramming associated with oil accumulation in oil palm mesocarp.

Oil palm (Elaeis guineensis Jacq.) is the most productive oil-bearing crop globally, yet the molecular basis of mesocarp development and lipid accumulation remains poorly understood. Ultra-deep data-independent acquisition mass spectrometry (DIA-MS) was applied to characterize proteome dynamics in two contrasting genotypes, seedless (KS) and thin-shelled (TS), across five developmental stages (P1-P5) spanning fruit development to mature oil accumulation. Phenotypic analysis revealed higher mesocarp proportion and oil content in KS during late maturation. A total of 137,615 peptides correspondi

Exploring Neopestalotiopsis diversity associated with Blueberry leaf and twig blight in South African nurseries.

New blueberry plantings in South Africa have increased dramatically since the year 2000, exceeding the global expansion rate. The crop is, however, impacted by several economically important fungal pathogens. Lesser-known fungi such as pestalotioid species can cause leaf and twig blight, and have the potential to become a global threat to blueberry production and expansion. This study aimed to assess the presence of such fungal species in blueberry nurseries in South Africa due to the industry's exponential growth and mass introduction of new cultivars. Symptomatic leaf and twig samples were c

Transcriptional landscape of Atractylodes chinensis contracting root rot.

Atractylodes chinensis is among the most economically valuable medicinal plants, serving as the primary source of Atractylodis rhizoma. Its pharmacological activities in treating digestive and urinary disorders have been officially recognized in both the Chinese and Japanese Pharmacopoeias. Whereas, the natural scarcity of Atractylodes chinensis necessitates enhanced cultivation strategies, particularly targeting root rot resistance to ameliorate crop yield and sustainable production. This study implemented controlled cultivation of Atractylodes chinensis and collected rhizome samples exhibiti

Better Together: Synergistic Enhancement of AuNPs and Bifunctional Monomers in a Dual-Channel Molecularly Imprinting Electrochemical Sensor for Simultaneous Detection of Diuron and Thidiazuron.

The combination of diuron (DU) and thidiazuron (TDZ) is commonly used in cotton production for its excellent adaptability to low temperatures, which may lead to increased crop and soil pollution. The simultaneous detection of DU and TDZ poses significant challenges due to their weak and overlapping signals, along with an unclear electrochemical detection mechanism for TDZ. This study developed a dual-channel multifunctional molecularly imprinted electrochemical (MMIP-EC) sensing platform by optimizing the substrate material and MIP layer for high performance. First, amino-functionalized graphe

Effects of Fe and Zn alone and combined treatment on Triticum aestivum L. seed germination.

Seed germination represents a pivotal phase in crop production, exhibiting pronounced sensitivity to abiotic stresses. In this study, wheat seeds of the 'Ningchun 4' variety were subjected to treatments involving zinc (Zn) chloride and iron (Fe) chloride, both individually and in combination. The impacts of these treatments on Fe and Zn accumulation, starch mobilization, antioxidant responses, and nitric oxide (NO) metabolism during seed germination were thoroughly examined. Individual application of Fe or Zn significantly inhibited and delayed wheat seed germination, which was accompanied by …

Antifungal plant flavonoids identified in silico with potential to control rice blast disease caused by Magnaporthe oryzae.

Rice blast disease, caused by the fungus Magnaporthe oryzae, poses a severe threat to rice production, particularly in Asia where rice is a staple food. Concerns over fungicide resistance and environmental impact have sparked interest in exploring natural fungicides as potential alternatives. This study aimed to identify highly potent natural fungicides against M. oryzae to combat rice blast disease, using advanced molecular dynamics techniques. Four key proteins (CATALASE PEROXIDASES 2, HYBRID PKS-NRPS SYNTHETASE TAS1, MANGANESE LIPOXYGENASE, and PRE-MRNA-SPLICING FACTOR CEF1) involved in M.

Discovery of Trifluorobutene Amide Derivatives as Potential Nematicides: Design, Synthesis, Nematicidal Activity Evaluation, SAR, and Mode of Action Study.

Plant-parasitic nematodes are one of the major threats to crop protection. However, only limited nematicides are currently available and are confronted with a growing resistance problem, which necessitates the development of novel nematicides. In this study, a series of trifluorobutene amide derivatives was synthesized through the strategy of amide bond reversal, and their nematicidal activity against Meloidogyne incognita was evaluated. The bioassay showed that compounds C2, C10, and C18 and some analogues thereof exhibited good nematicidal activity. Among them, the derivatives of compound C2

The potential and prospects of modified biochar for comprehensive management of salt-affected soils and plants: A critical review.

Soil salinization has become a global problem that threatens farmland health and restricts crop production. Salt-affected soils seriously restrict the development of agricultural, mainly because of sodium ion (Na+) toxicity, nutrient deficiency, and structural changes in the soil. Biochar is a carbon (C)-based substance produced by heating typical biomass waste at high temperatures in anaerobic circumstances. It has high cation exchange capacity (CEC), adsorption capacity, and C content, which is often used as a soil amendment. Biochar generally reduces the concentration of Na+ in soil colloid…

Production and characterization of enriched vermicompost from banana leaf biomass waste activated by biochar integration.

Vermicomposting uses less energy and requires fewer infrastructures, and it is capable of restoring soil nutrition and carbon. Banana cultivation produces lots of trash in a single crop season, with 30 tonnes of waste generated per acre. The biodegradable fraction of banana leaf waste is thrown out in large quantities from temples, markets place wedding halls, hotels, and residential areas. Vermicomposting can be used for recovering lignin, cellulose, pectin, and hemicellulose from banana leaves. Earthworm digests organic materials with the enzymes produced in gut microflora. Biochar adds bulk

Soybean Root Growth in Response to Chemical, Physical, and Biological Soil Variations.

Environmental conditions affect crop yield, and water deficit has been highlighted by the negative impact on soybean grain production. Radicial growth in greater volume and depth can be an alternative to minimize losses caused by a lack of water. Therefore, knowledge of how soybean roots behave before the chemical, physical, and biological attributes of the soil can help establish managements that benefit in-depth root growth. The objective was to evaluate the growth of soybean roots in response to chemical, physical, and biological variations in the soil, in different soil locations and depth

Factors influencing local ecological knowledge of forage resources: Ethnobotanical evidence from West Africa's savannas.

Recording local ecological knowledge (LEK) is a useful approach to understanding interactions of the complex social-ecological systems. In spite of the recent growing interest in LEK studies on the effects of climate and land use changes, livestock mobility decisions and other aspects of agro-pastoral systems, LEK on forage plants has still been vastly under-documented in the West African savannas. Using a study area ranging from northern Ghana to central Burkina Faso, we thus aimed at exploring how aridity and socio-demographic factors drive the distributional patterns of forage-related LEK a

Comparative genomic analysis of multiple strains of two unusual plant pathogens: Pseudomonas corrugata and Pseudomonas mediterranea.

The non-fluorescent pseudomonads, Pseudomonas corrugata (Pcor) and P. mediterranea (Pmed), are closely related species that cause pith necrosis, a disease of tomato that causes severe crop losses. However, they also show strong antagonistic effects against economically important pathogens, demonstrating their potential for utilization as biological control agents. In addition, their metabolic versatility makes them attractive for the production of commercial biomolecules and bioremediation. An extensive comparative genomics study is required to dissect the mechanisms that Pcor and Pmed employ
