Low sensitivity of a self-report questionnaire for hand eczema in hairdressing apprentices.

BACKGROUND: The validity of the self-report questionnaire for hand eczema (HE) among Croatian hairdressers was not investigated previously, leading to uncertainty in the prevalence estimated from self-reported data. OBJECTIVES: To (1) investigate the validity of the self-report questionnaire for HE in hairdressing apprentices and (2) examine the differences between apprentices who recognised their HE symptoms and those who did not. METHODS: Clinical examination for HE signs on hands and wrists was performed by the Osnabrueck Hand Eczema Severity Index for 408 apprentices at four visits cover

METHODS: A retrospective descriptive study on consecutive patients affected by HE who underwent patch testing from 2016 to 2023 in eight dermatology clinics was performed. HE patients were divided int

Acrylate-induced allergic contact dermatitis in a car windscreen repairer.

We report a case of an allergic skin reaction to ultraviolet-cured acrylates in a windscreen repair worker. The patient presented with a 6 month history of fingertip dryness, vesicles and desquamation. He had worked as a self-employed car windscreen repairer for 19 years. Previous management with vinyl glove protection and treatment with clobetasol propionate ointment had produced little improvement. He was patch tested to the British Society for Cutaneous Allergy standard and preservatives series and to the two acrylates used in his work environment, identified using safety data sheets, methy

[Mastitis revealing Churg-Strauss syndrome].

BACKGROUND: Churg-Strauss syndrome often involves the skin, and this may sometimes reveal the disease. OBSERVATION: A 25-year-old woman was referred to a gynaecologist for inflammation of the right breast with breast discharge. Cytological analysis of the liquid showed numerous inflammatory cells, particularly polymorphonuclear eosinophils and neutrophils. Ultrasound examination of the breast was consistent with galactophoritis. CRP was normal, and hypereosinophilia was seen. The patient was subsequently referred to a dermatology unit. Skin examination revealed inflammation of the entire brea

Filaggrin null mutations and association with contact allergy and allergic contact dermatitis: results from a tertiary dermatology clinic.

BACKGROUND: Filaggrin null (FLG) mutations lead to skin barrier disruption with a reduced resistance towards exogenous agents and also influence the course of disease in atopic dermatitis. OBJECTIVES: To examine the association between FLG mutations and contact allergy, polysensitization, hand eczema at first appearance of disease, occurrence, and course of dermatitis. METHODS: A venous blood sample from 430 individuals was genotyped for FLG mutations R501X and 2282del4 with polymerase chain reaction followed by typing through hybridization to paramagnetic polystyrene beads and analysis on a
