A chronic stress-induced microbiome perturbation, highly enriched in Ruminococcaceae_UCG-014, promotes colorectal cancer growth and metastasis.

Purpose: Mounting evidence indicates that psychological stress adversely affects cancer progression including tumor growth and metastasis. The aim of this study was to investigate the role of chronic stress-induced microbiome perturbation in colorectal cancer (CRC) progression. Methods: Chronic restraint stress (CRS) was used to establish the chronic stress mouse model, behavioral tests were used for the CRS model evaluation. Subcutaneous xenograft model and lung metastasis model were established to investigate the growth and metastasis of CRC promoted by CRS exposure. 16S rRNA gene sequencing

Myoclonus, Uremia, and Delirium in a Liver Transplant Recipient: A Case Report and Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: Consultation-liaison (CL) psychiatrists are frequently asked to consult on various abnormal movements (1). CL psychiatrists can be instrumental in aiding the primary teams to identify and manage these movement disorders. In this manuscript, we provide an illustrative case of a patient presenting with myoclonus and offer a review on this important topic. Myoclonus accompanied by delirium represents a rare post-transplant complication and can be associated with heightened morbidity and mortality. The incidence of this complication in solid organ transplant recipients is scarcely docu

"Quality of Life in Epidermolysis Bullosa" and "Epidermolysis Bullosa Burden of Disease": Italian translation, cultural adaptation, and pilot testing of two disease-specific questionnaires.

BACKGROUND: Inherited epidermolysis bullosa (EB) is a clinically and genetically heterogeneous group of skin fragility disorders characterized by blister formation following minor trauma. Four major types are distinguished based on the level of cleavage within the skin. Most EB forms present severely disabling cutaneous and systemic signs and symptoms. Management relies on daily time-consuming and distressing topical medications, and symptomatic treatment of systemic findings. Disease manifestations, symptoms, and daily care strongly affect patient and caregiver quality of life (QoL). To date,

Successful Discharge to Community From Home Health Less Likely for People in Late Stages of Dementia.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Several studies have established the efficacy of home health in meeting the health care needs of people with Alzheimer disease and related dementias (ADRD) and helping them to remain at home. However, transitioning to the community after discharge from home health presents challenges to patient safety and quality of life. The severity of an individual's functional impairments, cognitive limitations, and behavioral and psychological symptoms may compound these challenges. The purpose of this study was to examine the association between dementia severity and successful di

ACCEPTANCE: protocol for a feasibility study of a multicomponent physical activity intervention following treatment for cervical cancer.

INTRODUCTION: Cervical cancer treatment can have life changing sequelae and be associated with poor short-term and long-term quality of life. Physical activity (PA; that is, bodily movement) is known to improve health outcomes and quality of life for cancer survivors, both physically and psychologically. To date, no interventions to increase PA following cervical cancer have been evaluated. This study aims to (1) determine the feasibility of conducting a PA intervention after cervical cancer and (2) to explore the acceptability of the programme and evaluation measures. METHODS AND ANALYSIS: T

Multi-sectoral response to child maltreatment in Switzerland for different age groups: Varying rates of reported incidents and gaps in identification.

BACKGROUND: As many countries lack (multi-sectoral) data on the epidemiology of agency responses to child maltreatment, they do not know if children in different regions of the country have equal chances to receive help and protection. The Optimus Study, the first nationally representative Swiss study on multi-sectoral responses to child maltreatment, examines gaps in identifying children in need and reveals opportunities for improved support and protection. METHODS: A stratified sample of 351 agencies (participation rate 81 %) in the social and health sector, public child protection, and the

Personality Traits and Beliefs About Peers' On-Road Behaviors as Predictors of Adolescents' Moped-Riding Profiles.

Several efforts aimed at discriminating between different degrees of on-road risky attitudes have been devoted to the identification of personality profiles among young drivers. However, the results are often inconsistent because of the limits of self-report measures. To overcome these limits, we tried to identify different profiles based on our study participants' driving performances in a virtual environment and to look for psychological predictors of inclusion in one of three profiles. One-hundred and fourteen inexperienced adolescents were involved in this study, which included two experim

Perception of Health Problems Among Competitive Runners: A Qualitative Study of Cognitive Appraisals and Behavioral Responses.

BACKGROUND: Approximately 2 of every 3 competitive runners sustain at least 1 health problem each season. Most of these problems are nontraumatic injuries with gradual onset. The main known risk indicator for sustaining a new running-related injury episode is a history of a previous injury, suggesting that behavioral habits are part of the causal mechanisms. PURPOSE: Identification of elements associated with purposeful interpretations of body perceptions and balanced behavioral responses may supply vital information for prevention of health problems in runners. This study set out to explore

Diagnostic decision-making and strategies to improve diagnosis.

A significant portion of diagnostic errors arises through cognitive errors resulting from inadequate knowledge, faulty data gathering, and/or faulty verification. Experts estimate that 75% of diagnostic failures can be attributed to clinician diagnostic thinking failure. The cognitive processes that underlie diagnostic thinking of clinicians are complex and intriguing, and it is imperative that clinicians acquire explicit appreciation and application of different cognitive approaches to make decisions better. A dual-process model that unifies many theories of decision-making has emerged as a p

[Sleep disorders in children and adolescents: Clinical assessment and principles of management].

INTRODUCTION: Sleep disturbances in children and adolescents are a frequent reason for consultation in pediatrics, primary care, and child and adolescent psychiatry. Their clinical presentation is heterogeneous and lies at the intersection of developmental, circadian, behavioral, psychological, and family-related factors. The aim of this review is to provide a structured clinical synthesis of the main sleep disorders in children and adolescents, as well as updated principles of their management. METHODS: This narrative review is based on a critical synthesis of the literature and other refere

A step forward in hidradenitis suppurativa consultations: The development of conversation cards.

BACKGROUND: Hidradenitis suppurativa (HS) is a chronic inflammatory skin disease that imposes significant physical and psychological burdens, making self-management essential. Agenda-setting tools, such as conversation cards (CCs), have improved patient engagement and supported self-management in other chronic diseases, yet no analogous tool exists for HS. OBJECTIVE: To design, test and evaluate a set of CCs for patients with HS to facilitate patient-centred dialogue during consultations to support self-management. METHODS: Development followed three stages with inspiration from the Particip

Comparison of an ensemble machine learning model to a Cox regression model to predict colorectal cancer risk among people with HIV using retrospective nationwide cohort data in Sweden: a study protocol.

INTRODUCTION: There are currently no colorectal cancer (CRC) screening recommendations specifically outlined for people with HIV (PWH). Screening measures used for people without HIV (PWoH) have been previously discussed as sufficient for use among PWH, despite observations of higher CRC prevalence and CRC reportedly appearing at earlier ages among PWH in comparison to PWoH. Machine learning (ML) methods are regarded as robust approaches that may enhance predictive performance, particularly in the context of complex or high-dimensional data. This study aims to develop an ensemble ML model to p

Deprescription of benzodiazepines and its management according to an overlapping strategy with a low-dose multicomponent medication: a Delphi consensus.

BACKGROUND: About 20% of adults and between 6% and 13% of children experience mild to moderate anxiety and stress-related symptoms. Benzodiazepines (BZDs) are considered the referring medications for early-stage anxiety and stress-related symptoms management. Nevertheless, BZDs must be managed carefully because their use, especially chronic, could be linked with some adverse effects, and can promote the onset of psychological and physical dependence. They also often show progressive tolerance, necessitating an increase in dosage, and therefore their use should be discouraged. In the clinical m

Identification of Presurgical Risk Factors for the Development of Chronic Postsurgical Pain in Adults: A Comprehensive Umbrella Review.

PURPOSE: Risk factors for the development of chronic postsurgical pain (CPSP) have been reported in primary studies and an increasing number of reviews. The objective of this umbrella review was to compile and understand the published presurgical risk factors associated with the development of CPSP for various surgery types. METHODS: Six databases were searched from January 2000 to June 2023 to identify meta-analyses, scoping studies, and systematic reviews investigating presurgical CPSP predictors in adult patients. Articles were screened by title/abstract and subsequently by full text by tw

Psychosocial and mental impact of alopecia areata: Analysis of the Danish Skin Cohort.

IMPORTANCE: Alopecia areata (AA) carries a psychological burden for patients beyond hair loss. However, quality-of-life measurement tools such as EQ-5D used in clinical trials may not adequately capture the burden of AA, the perceived stigmatization or the psychosocial impact of AA. OBJECTIVE: To investigate the potential association between disease severity and the degree of social isolation, perceived stigmatization, anxiety and depression, alcohol consumption and work absenteeism using multiple PRO measures in patients with AA. Design and rationale of the REStoring mood after early life trauma with psychotherapy (RESET-psychotherapy) study: a multicenter randomized controlled trial on the efficacy of adjunctive trauma-focused therapy (TFT) versus treatment as usual (TAU) for adult patients with major depressive disorder (MDD) and childhood trauma.

BACKGROUND: Major depressive disorder (MDD) is a common, recurrent mental disorder and a leading cause of disability worldwide. A large part of adult MDD patients report a history of childhood trauma (CT). Patients with MDD and CT are assumed to represent a clinically and neurobiologically distinct MDD subtype with an earlier onset, unfavorable disease course, stress systems' dysregulations and brain alterations. Currently, there is no evidence-based treatment strategy for MDD that specifically targets CT. Given the central role of trauma in MDD patients with CT, trauma-focused therapy (TFT),

Mental health literacy of Chinese nurses from public general and psychiatric hospitals: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Mental health literacy (MHL) is crucial to address issues related to mental illness. Nurses' MHL is even more important because they are expected to deal with both the physical and psychological consequences of mental disorders. OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the level, discrepancy, and characteristics of MHL among Chinese nurses from both public general and psychiatric hospitals; identified influential factors; and explored the relationship between MHL and mental health status. METHODS: Using a stratified cluster sampling method to select participants, a cross-sectional surv
