Multiparametric MRI for organ quality assessment in a porcine Ex-Vivo lung perfusion system.

INTRODUCTION: Ex-vivo lung perfusion (EVLP) is an emerging technique promising an expansion of the donor pool and improvements in the outcome after lung transplantation. Reliable biomarkers for local assessment of organ function in the EVLP system are intensely sought after. This study aims to evaluate the feasibility of multiparametric functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) in an EVLP system in a porcine aspiration model. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Seven female pigs were anesthetized and gastric juice was instilled in the right lower lobe bronchus to simulate aspiration. Left lungs served a

Cortical Thinning and Cognitive Impairment in Parkinson's Disease without Dementia.

Parkinson's disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder characterized clinically by motor dysfunction (bradykinesia, rigidity, tremor, and postural instability), and pathologically by the loss of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra of the basal ganglia. Growing literature supports that cognitive deficits may also be present in PD, even in non-demented patients. Gray matter (GM) atrophy has been reported in PD and may be related to cognitive decline. This study investigated cortical thickness in non-demented PD subjects and elucidated its relationship to cognitive impairme

Three-dimensional volumetric analysis of ghost cell odontogenic carcinoma using 3-D reconstruction software: a case report.

OBJECTIVE: Ghost cell odontogenic carcinoma is a very rare malignant neoplasm. Tumor volume may be a more precise alternative for determining size, which is usually measured by maximum linear dimension. The purpose of this case report is to highlight the importance of obtaining 3-dimensional (3-D) images of the tumor for volumetric analysis to improve the chances of surgical success. This report presents a case of ghost cell odontogenic carcinoma infiltrating the maxillary sinus through the palate. The lesion was surgically treated and subsequently selected for volumetric reconstruction and an

Estimation of an image derived input function with MR-defined carotid arteries in FDG-PET human studies using a novel partial volume correction method.

Kinetic analysis of 18F-fluorodeoxyglucose positron emission tomography data requires an accurate knowledge the arterial input function. The gold standard method to measure the arterial input function requires collection of arterial blood samples and is an invasive method. Measuring an image derived input function is a non-invasive alternative but is challenging due to partial volume effects caused by the limited spatial resolution of the positron emission tomography scanners. In this work, a practical image derived input function extraction method is presented, which only requires segmentatio

A novel approach for the automated segmentation and volume quantification of cardiac fats on computed tomography.

The deposits of fat on the surroundings of the heart are correlated to several health risk factors such as atherosclerosis, carotid stiffness, coronary artery calcification, atrial fibrillation and many others. These deposits vary unrelated to obesity, which reinforces its direct segmentation for further quantification. However, manual segmentation of these fats has not been widely deployed in clinical practice due to the required human workload and consequential high cost of physicians and technicians. In this work, we propose a unified method for an autonomous segmentation and quantification

Simulation of changes in diffusion related to different pathologies at cellular level after traumatic brain injury.

PURPOSE: The goal of the current study was to investigate tissue pathology at the cellular level in traumatic brain injury (TBI) as revealed by Monte Carlo simulation of diffusion tensor imaging (DTI)-derived parameters and elucidate the possible sources of conflicting findings of DTI abnormalities as reported in the TBI literature. METHODS: A model with three compartments separated by permeable membranes was employed to represent the diffusion environment of water molecules in brain white matter. The dynamic diffusion process was simulated with a Monte Carlo method using adjustable parameter

Highly adaptive tests for group differences in brain functional connectivity.

Resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (rs-fMRI) and other technologies have been offering evidence and insights showing that altered brain functional networks are associated with neurological illnesses such as Alzheimer's disease. Exploring brain networks of clinical populations compared to those of controls would be a key inquiry to reveal underlying neurological processes related to such illnesses. For such a purpose, group-level inference is a necessary first step in order to establish whether there are any genuinely disrupted brain subnetworks. Such an analysis is also challe

Contrast agent and radiation dose reduction in abdominal CT by a combination of low tube voltage and advanced image reconstruction algorithms.

OBJECTIVES: To assess image quality in abdominal CT at low tube voltage combined with two types of iterative reconstruction (IR) at four reduced contrast agent dose levels. METHODS: Minipigs were scanned with standard 320 mg I/mL contrast concentration at 120 kVp, and with reduced formulations of 120, 170, 220 and 270 mg I/mL at 80 kVp with IR. Image quality was assessed by CT value, dose normalized contrast and signal to noise ratio (CNRD and SNRD) in the arterial and venous phases. Qualitative analysis was included by expert reading. RESULTS: Protocols with 170 mg I/mL or higher showed equ

Malformations of the zygomatic and maxillary regions.

The maxillofacial region develops during 3 to 8 weeks in an embryo. The process involves neural crest cell migration and proliferation as well as facial protrusion jointing and fusion. The maxillofacial region is one of the predilection sites of congenital malformations. We treated a 5-year-old Chinese boy with abnormal development of the left maxillofacial region. We describe in detail the patient's characteristics, diagnosis, and treatment processes and try to explain the possible causes of the disease.

Extralobar pulmonary sequestration in a 55-year-old man.

Pulmonary sequestration is a rare congenital lung malformation that more commonly occurs in the left lung, mainly near the lower mediastinum. It is rarely observed in patients with extralobar sequestration in adulthood. We report the case of a 55-year-old man with recurrent fever and cough lasting for about 1 month, who was admitted to our hospital. His past history was unremarkable. The final diagnosis of extralobar sequestration was dependent on three-dimensional computed tomography angiography (3D CTA), which showed an abnormal blood supply vessel to the consolidation from the aortic arch.

Automated model-based vertebra detection, identification, and segmentation in CT images.

For many orthopaedic, neurological, and oncological applications, an exact segmentation of the vertebral column including an identification of each vertebra is essential. However, although bony structures show high contrast in CT images, the segmentation and labelling of individual vertebrae is challenging. In this paper, we present a comprehensive solution for automatically detecting, identifying, and segmenting vertebrae in CT images. A framework has been designed that takes an arbitrary CT image, e.g., head-neck, thorax, lumbar, or whole spine, as input and provides a segmentation in form o

MDCT and 3D imaging in transient enteroenteric intussusception: clinical observations and review of the literature.

OBJECTIVE: This article will review the current role of MDCT and 3D imaging in the diagnosis and management of adults with enteroenteric intussusception. CONCLUSION: Because of significant advancements in CT along with its increasing use, detection of enteroenteric intussusceptions by CT has increased. These findings are sometimes in asymptomatic patients, often transient, and without an identifiable lead point. This has complicated the management of adult patients with intussusception because not every patient with intussusception may need surgery.

Acute aortic syndromes: new insights from electrocardiographically gated computed tomography.

The development of retrospective electrocardiographic (ECG)-gating has proved to be a diagnostic and therapeutic boon for computed tomography (CT) imaging of patients with acute thoracic aortic diseases, such as aortic dissection/intramural hematoma (AD/IMH), penetrating atherosclerotic ulcer (APU), and ruptured/leaking aneurysm. The notorious pulsation motion artifacts in the ascending aorta confounding regular CT scanning can be eliminated, and involvement of the sinuses of Valsalva, the valve cusps, the aortic annulus, and the coronary arteries in aortic dissection can be clearly depicted o

Pre- and postoperative imaging of the aortic root for valve-sparing aortic root repair (V-SARR).

Valve-sparing aortic root repair (V-SARR) using the David reimplantation method is an increasingly popular alternative to composite valve graft aortic root replacement in patients with aortic root aneurysms or dissections who wish to avoid anticoagulation. Computed tomography (CT) with retrospective electrocardiograph (ECG)-gating has become routine before and following V-SARR at Stanford. CT allows accurate measurement of aortic dimensions and provides unprecedented three-dimensional (3D) images of the sinuses, the aortic valve cusps, and coronary arteries in patients with the Marfan syndrome

[MRT sequences as a database for a visual articulatory model].

Articulatory models can be used in phoniatrics for the visualisation of speech disorders, and can thus be used in teaching, the counselling of patients and their relatives, and in speech therapy. The articulatory model developed here was based on static MRI data of sustained sounds. MRI sequences are now being used to further refine the model with respect to speech movements. Medio-sagittal MRI sections were recorded for 12 consonants in the symmetrical context of the three point vowels [i:], [a:] and [u:] for this corpus. The recording-rate was eight images/s. The data show a strong influence

Quantification of SPECT myocardial perfusion images: methodology and validation of the Yale-CQ method.

BACKGROUND: Quantification of single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT) images is important for reproducible and accurate image interpretation. In addition, SPECT quantification provides important prognostic information. The purpose of this study was to validate the Yale circumferential quantification (Yale-CQ) method in phantom studies. METHODS: Myocardial perfusion defects of varying extent and severities were simulated in a cardiac phantom with fillable defect inserts. Forty-five different phantom configurations simulated 45 different myocardial perfusion defect sizes, ranging fro
