Human factors testing in a novel automated peritoneal dialysis system.

BackgroundBecause automated peritoneal dialysis (APD) systems are used in the home and operated by patients or their care partners, the human-device interface must be thoughtfully designed to facilitate intuitive operation to reduce the risk of errors that could occur during their use. User-friendly design should also help reduce anxiety to peritoneal dialysis (PD) adoption by patients incident to end-stage kidney disease (ESKD). Usability issues remain a significant barrier to PD adoption and are an important contributor to premature death, serious injuries, and PD technique failure.MethodsA

Generalized Local Kendall's τ: a novel framework for uncovering nonlinear local dependence.

Identifying patient subgroups is increasingly vital for advancing personalized and precision medicine, where patient heterogeneity plays a central role. Subgroups can be revealed by examining how predictors depend on each other. However, traditional global dependence measures, such as Kendall's τ, often overlook localized and nonlinear relationships, potentially missing critical patterns that define subpopulations. Existing local dependence measures are typically constrained to linear structures or lack flexibility in capturing complex local behaviors. We propose a novel, intuitive, and highly

From the Laboratory to the Field: Assessing the Usability of the NTDscope in the Tropical Rainforest Region of Gabon.

In regions where Loa loa is coendemic with lymphatic filariasis and onchocerciasis, mass drug administration of ivermectin has posed a risk for serious adverse reactions in individuals with high microfilarial loads. To overcome this problem, easy-to-use point-of-care diagnostic tools are crucial for identifying individuals at risk in population-based control programs. The NTDscope is a device that uses smartphone components for video microscopy and may support decentralized L. loa microfilariae screening under field conditions. This study evaluated the usability and operational feasibility of

Finger Joint Angle and Gesture Estimation Under Dynamic Hand Position Using a Soft Printed Electrode Array.

The pursuit of innovative methods for finger gesture recognition has been an area of active research, with particular emphasis on surface electromyography (sEMG) due to its potential in human-machine interface (HMI) applications, especially in scenarios where visual imaging is impractical. EMG is a promising approach for gesture recognition, but is highly susceptible to movement artifacts, individual motor variability, and changes in hand position, making gesture recognition challenging during dynamic hand movements. While progress has been made in EMG data collection and analysis, most studie

An organic array of quantum corrals modulated by the gold herringbone electronic superlattice.

The periodic herringbone reconstruction on the surface of Au(111) consists of alternating face-centered-cubic (fcc) and hexagonal-closed-packed (hcp) sites separated by dislocation lines and elbows. This well-known arrangement acts as an electronic superlattice for surface-state electrons, creating a mini-gapped band structure with a modulated electronic density. This rich and fascinating geometrical and electronic landscape has countless times served as a platform for molecular self-assembly and on-surface synthesis of carbon-based nanoarchitectures as well as a template for 2D material growt

An Improved Monte Carlo Method for Quantitative Analysis of Transparency Degradation Caused by Corneal Edema.

PURPOSE: To address the impact of corneal edema on transparency, we proposed an improved Monte Carlo (MC) method that uses a cost-effective and easily applicable approach to extract fibril features. This method aims to enhance computational accuracy and elucidate microscopic mechanisms of corneal transparency. METHODS: Fresh ex vivo porcine corneas were immersed in deionized water to simulate various states of corneal edema. For each edema state, we carefully analyzed its transparency and fibrous conditions. The diameter and spatial distribution of corneal fibrils were measured using image re

Assisting clinical diagnosis with interpretable fuzzy probabilistic modelling.

BACKGROUND: The need for transparency and interpretability is a fundamental theme to be addressed by Artificial Intelligence (AI) research, especially in high-risk applications such as healthcare. In this work, we propose Fuzzy Sets in Probability Trees (FPT), a novel method that combines probabilistic trees and fuzzy logic. This approach is fully interpretable, providing clinicians with a tool generate and verify the entire clinical decision process. METHODS: FPT extends the existing framework of Probabilistic Decision Trees by incorporating the uncertainty in the data, allowing for a flexibl

deepNGS navigator: exploring antibody NGS datasets using deep contrastive learning.

MOTIVATION: High-throughput sequencing uncovers how B-cells adapt in response to antigens by generating B-cell-receptor (BCR) sequences at an unprecedented scale. As BCR datasets grow to millions of sequences, using efficient computational methods becomes crucial. One important aspect of antibody sequence analysis is detecting clonal families or clusters of related sequences, whether they come from immunization, synthetic-libraries or even ML-generated datasets. RESULTS: We introduce deepNGS Navigator, a computational tool that leverages language models and contrastive learning to transform a

PSC and colitis: A complex relationship.

Primary sclerosing cholangitis is one of the most challenging conditions in hepatology, and due to our limited understanding of its pathogenesis, no causal therapies are currently available. While it was long assumed that a minority of people with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) also develop primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC), which is sometimes labeled an extraintestinal manifestation of IBD, the clinical phenotype, genetic, and intestinal microbiota associations strongly argue for PSC-IBD being a distinct form of IBD, existing alongside ulcerative colitis and Crohn's disease. In fact, the

A case study integrating scenario thinking with dialysis policymaking in Thailand.

BACKGROUND: Healthcare policymaking often struggles to account for complex future uncertainties, particularly for policies affecting healthcare infrastructure or stakeholder behaviour. Scenario thinking is a structured approach for exploring multiple plausible futures. It has, however, been underutilised in healthcare policymaking. We applied scenario thinking to the 2024 dialysis policy in Thailand to guide policymaking under future uncertainty. METHODS: Our study is composed of three parts: scenario development, policy analysis, and evaluation of scenario thinking in the policy process. We

Myo-MOVES: a custom electrical stimulation system for functional studies of 3D bioengineered muscle.

Electrical pulse stimulation (EPS) is used to replicate motor neuron activation in muscle tissues, enabling in vitro studies of muscle contraction. However, both custom-built and commercial existing EPS systems often suffer from significant limitations, including limited scalability, high cost, and lack of flexibility for experimental adaptation. This work presents the Myo-MOVES platform, a practical solution for stimulating 3D skeletal muscle tissues. The device has been designed as an intuitive EPS system consisting of two main components: a selector and a stimulator that adapts to commercia

Smartphone-integrated ratiometric fluorescence sensor using Al3+/BSA-stabilized CuNCs for on-site visual detection of ciprofloxacin in aquatic foods.

The residual presence of ciprofloxacin (CIP) in aquatic products raises, increasing concerns regarding bioaccumulation and antimicrobial resistance, necessitating the development of highly sensitive and selective detection methods. Here, we present a novel ratiometric fluorescence sensor based on bovine serum albumin-stabilized copper nanoclusters (BSA-CuNCs) and Al3+ for CIP detection. CIP complexes with Al3+ to simultaneously quench the orange-red emission of BSA-CuNCs at 600 nm and enhance its intrinsic blue emission at 490 nm, thereby producing a self-calibrated ratiometric signal (F490/F6

The Extent of Pulmonary Vein Electrical Connections Predicts the Success of Stand-Alone Pulmonary Vein Isolation in Persistent Atrial Fibrillation.

BACKGROUND: Identification of persistent AF (PsAF) patients who may be cured with stand-alone pulmonary vein isolation (PVI) would allow more efficient ablation strategies. Intuitively, the benefit of PVI is expected to be lower when PVs are poorly connected, but this assumption has never been tested. OBJECTIVE: Evaluate whether the circumferential extent of PV connections assessed pre-ablation predicts the success rate of PVI. METHODS: Consecutive patients with PsAF undergoing first ablation with stand-alone PVI were included. The extent of PV electrical connection was assessed using a circ

Real-time fine finger motion decoding for transradial amputees with surface electromyography.

Advancements in human-machine interfaces (HMIs) are pivotal for enhancing rehabilitation technologies and improving the quality of life for individuals with limb loss. This paper presents a novel CNN-Transformer model for decoding continuous fine finger motions from surface electromyography (sEMG) signals by integrating the convolutional neural network (CNN) and Transformer architecture, focusing on applications for transradial amputees. This model leverages the strengths of both convolutional and Transformer architectures to effectively capture both local muscle activation patterns and global

Ingestive Behavior and Precision Nutrition: Part of the Puzzle.

The marked individual variability in response to common dietary exposures necessitates tailoring of dietary guidance to individuals, or small groups of individuals with similar needs, to optimize health. This is a complex task requiring integration of environmental, cultural, psychological, and biological contributions. Work in the area of precision nutrition is an effort to translate science into practice. A research roadmap developed through a National Institutes of Health conference identified many of the inputs that require quantification. Better characterization of ingestive behaviors is
