Lack of bone volume to place dental implants is frequently a problem in the reconstruction of edentulous patients. Even though autografts are the gold standard for jaw regeneration, morbidity associated with the harvesting site stimulates the demand for other substitutes. The aim of this study is to characterize the incorporation and the osteogenic ability of a viable cryopreserved human bone graft (VC-HBG) in the mandibular augmentation in rats. Bone chips from fresh human vertebrae cadaveric donors were processed, cryoprotected and deep-frozen at - 80 °C maintaining its cell viability. A jaw

Two slow-growing, Gram-negative, non-motile, non-spore-forming, coccoid bacteria (strains F60T and F965), isolated in Austria from mandibular lymph nodes of two red foxes (Vulpes vulpes), were subjected to a polyphasic taxonomic analysis. In a recent study, both isolates were assigned to the genus Brucella but could not be attributed to any of the existing species. Hence, we have analysed both strains in further detail to determine their exact taxonomic position and genetic relatedness to other members of the genus Brucella. The genome sizes of F60T and F965 were 3 236 779 and 3 237 765 bp, re

Cone-beam imaging has gained broad acceptance in dentistry in the last 5 years. The purpose of this review is to describe the use in dentistry and consider issues requiring further development. Cone-beam machines emit an x-ray beam shaped liked a cone rather than a fan as in conventional computed tomography (CT) machines. After this beam passes through the patient the remnant beam is captured on an amorphous silicon flat panel or image intensifier/charge-coupled device (CCD) detector. The beam diameter ranges from 4 to 30 cm and exposes the head in one pass around the patient capturing from 16

Anterior surgery to the upper cervical spine, although rare, several successful approaches were described in the literature. To avoid the risks and limitations of transoral approach, the anterior retropharyngeal approach was developed. In this study, we describe our experience with anterior retropharyngeal approach to the upper cervical spine and discuss the significance of resecting the submandibular gland. From July 2001 to July 2004, we performed six anterior prevascular retropharyngeal approaches to the upper cervical spine. The series included five males and one female, ranging in age fro

This study evaluated bone and cementum regeneration following periodontal reconstructive surgery using recombinant human bone morphogenetic protein-2 (rhBMP-2) in six beagle dogs. Surgically created mandibular supraalveolar premolar tooth defects in contralateral jaw quadrants were randomly assigned to receive rhBMP-2 or control vehicle. Clinical defect height was prepared to 5 mm. rhBMP-2 was applied with synthetic bioerodable particles and autologous blood using 20 micrograms rhBMP-2 per 100 microliters implant volume. Flaps were advanced to submerge the teeth and sutured. The dogs were sacr

BACKGROUND: Facial aging involves complex, region-specific changes in both soft tissue and the underlying bone. Although skeletal remodeling is believed to contribute significantly, most studies rely on cross-sectional imaging, which limits the understanding of longitudinal bony changes in individuals over time.
OBJECTIVES: The authors aimed to quantify and characterize age-related changes in facial skeletal morphology using 3-dimensional (3D) computed tomography (CT) scans of the same individuals obtained approximately a decade apart. To the authors' knowledge, this is the first study to lon

BACKGROUND: Immature teeth with necrotic pulps present multiple challenges to clinicians. In such cases, regenerative endodontic procedures (REPs) may be a favorable strategy. Cells, biomaterial scaffolds, and signaling molecules are three key elements of REPs. Autologous human dental pulp cells (hDPCs) play an important role in pulp regeneration. In addition, autologous platelet concentrates (APCs) have recently been demonstrated as effective biomaterial scaffolds in regenerative dentistry, whereas the latest generation of APCs-concentrated growth factor (CGF), especially liquid phase CGF (LP

INTRODUCTION: Extensive comminuted fractures are associated with tooth loss that ultimately leads to dimensional changes in the hard and soft tissues of the alveolar ridge. Reconstruction of the lost mandibular anterior ridge is very complex due to the natural curvature of the region. Case Presentation. In this case report, the combination of the modified shell technique with autologous bone plates and the guided bone regeneration (GBR) technique was performed on an 18-year-old patient after a comminuted fracture, to ensure new bone formation in the anterior ridge with a natural curvature. We used fluorochrome labeling to study spatiotemporal variation of dentin apposition (DAR) and extension (DER) rates during crown and root formation of mandibular first molars from wild boar and domestic pigs. DAR was reconstructed along the course of dentinal tubules in four zones of the crown and in the upper root area. In all five zones, mean DAR increased during the first 30% to 40% of apposition, reaching highest values (22-23 μm/day) in the upper-lateral crown zone. Lowest values were recorded near the dentin-pulp interface (DPI). Typically, DARs in contemporaneously formed dentin areas

Nager syndrome is a rare human developmental disorder characterized by craniofacial defects including the downward slanting of the palpebral fissures, cleft palate, limb deformities, mandibular hypoplasia, hypoplasia or absence of thumbs, microretrognathia, and ankylosis of the temporomandibular joint. The prevalence is very rare and the literature describes only about a hundred cases of Nager syndrome. There is evidence of autosomal dominant and autosomal recessive inheritance for Nager syndrome, suggesting genetic heterogeneity. The majority of the described causes of Nager syndrome include
