Rainfall and breed effects on the efficacy of ivermectin jetting fluid for the prevention of fly strike and treatment of infestations of lice in long-wooled sheep.

An ivermectin-based jetting fluid was assessed for its efficacy in the prevention of blowfly strike and treatment of lice in long-wooled sheep. The ivermectin concentrate was diluted to 0.03 mg/mL and applied via a standard hand jetting technique. In insectary studies, using laboratory-reared Lucilia cuprina, sheep jetted with ivermectin were protected from induced breech and body strikes for 18 weeks after treatment. Merino and Corriedale sheep were equally protected, as were sheep subjected to 25 mm simulated rainfall at 1, 3 or 6 hours after jetting. Naturally occurring infestations of lice

Pharyngeal bot flies (Oestridae) from sympatric wild cervids in southern Spain.

The prevalence of 2 species of pharyngeal bot flies parasitizing sympatric wild ungulates from southern Spain is given. Pharyngomyia picta was found in all red deer and fallow deer whereas Cephenemyia auribarbis was found in 59% of fallow deer and 81% of red deer examined. The mean number of P. picta larvae was 3-6 times more than that of C. auribarbis larvae. These data suggest that red deer are more heavily parasitized than fallow deer and that they are predominantly infested with P. picta larvae.

Observations of differential decomposition on sun exposed v. shaded pig carrion in coastal Washington State.

The decomposition of two pig carcasses in close proximity to each other, one exposed and the other shaded, in a continuous woodland were observed and different rates of decay were recorded. The exposed pig decomposed much faster than the shaded pig, reaching a stable minimal weight two weeks before the shaded carcass. Bloat size, body weight, occurrence of blow fly larvae, and ambient air temperatures are compared. Maggot development appeared to be a major factor in the overall rate of decomposition and was affected primarily by different temperature patterns at the two sites.

Conjunctival ophthalmomyiasis caused by the sheep nasal botfly (Oestrus ovis).

Three patients had conjunctival ophthalmomyiasis caused by the ovine nasal botfly. All patients had a sudden onset of redness, tearing, and foreign-body sensation of the affected eye. One to nine Oestrus ovis first-instar larvae were removed from the bulbar or palpebral conjunctiva of each patient. Symptoms and clinical signs resolved after mechanical removal of the larvae. Specific taxonomic diagnosis of O. ovis larvae was determined on the basis of characteristic conformation of the terminal end of the larval caudal segment as seen by use of light microscopy.

Rabbit antibody responses to experimental infestation with Dermatobia hominis.

The three larval stages of Dermatobia hominis (Linnaeus) have been evaluated for their immunogenicity by ELISA and immunodiffusion (ID) using sera from experimentally infested rabbits. During a primary infestation, first instar D. hominis were found to cause most reaction and allowed the earliest diagnosis by ELISA. An inhibition of the antibody response against second and third instars was observed. The inhibition disappeared after departure of the larvae from the host. In experimentally immunized hosts the antibody response, following challenge, was highest against second and third instar an

The ovipositional response of the Australian sheep blowfly, Lucilia cuprina, to fleece-rot odours.

The ovipositional response of Lucilia cuprina flies to odours emanating from fleece-rot lesions of greasy wool in which Pseudomonas aeruginosa bacteria proliferated, was studied. Fractionation of the fleece-rot odours was carried out by bubbling the volatile components through hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide solutions to remove basic odours and acidic odours respectively. It was found that the acidic/neutral odours of fleece-rot wool, when perfused into wet, greasy wool stimulated L. cuprina to oviposit. On the other hand, the basic/neutral odours of fleece-rot wool were virtually unatt

Parasites of domestic and wild animals in South Africa. III. Oestrus spp. and Gedoelstia hässleri in the blesbok.

Four blesbok culled in the Rietvlei Nature Reserve, Pretoria, District during May 1972 were found to harbour large burdens of 1st instar Oestrus spp. larvae and from 16-37 3rd instar larvae of Oestrus macdonaldi. They were also infested with large numbers of 1st instar Gedoelstia hässleri larvae but only 2 harboured 3rd stage larvae of this species. During an 18-month period 34 blesbok were culled in pairs in the Percy Fyfe Nature Reserve, Potgietersrus District. These antelope harboured peak numbers of 1st instar Oestrus spp. larvae during February, July and December but few if any during ear

Comparative ability of hybrid and homozygous resistant larvae of Lucilia cuprina to cause strikes under experimental conditions.

The intervals between the jetting of sheep with dieldrin or BHC, and the inducement of flystrike by implants of hybrid and homozygous BHC/dieldrin resistant larvae of Lucilia cuprina, were compared. Flystrikes soon established with homozygous resistant larvae, but considerable protection was afforded against hybrid larvae, the interval being longer with BHC than with dieldrin. Dieldrin was shown to have a residual effect on rr larvae in a mixed population 9 weeks after jetting. It is suggested that wide adoption of mulesing and mid-season's crutching would favour reversion to susceptibility in

The effect of sex on susceptibility to ovine oestrosis in naturally infested lambs.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of sex on natural infestation by Oestrus ovis in lambs. A total of 26 crossbred lambs (14 males and 12 females), aged between 4 and 5 months at the beginning of the 114-day (D0-D113) trial, were maintained under a semi-intensive system in southeastern Brazil. At 8-9 months of age, animals were slaughtered for larval recovery and quantification from the nasal cavity. A total of 483 larvae were recovered, of wich 321 (66.5%) were first-instar larvae (L1) and 162 (33.5%) were second-instar larvae (L2). All males (n = 14) were parasitized, with b

Molecular and morphological characterization of third instar Palaearctic horse stomach bot fly larvae (Oestridae: Gasterophilinae, Gasterophilus).

Species of Gasterophilus are obligate parasites of equids and may induce severe, even lethal myiasis. However, identification of the third instar Gasterophilus larva at the species level is still problematic predominantly due to a shortage of diagnostic morphological features and incomplete molecular libraries. Testing the suitability of three different molecular markers showed that the traditional 650 bp barcode region near the 5' terminus of the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) served as a better tool for species-level identification than a 663 bp region near the 3' terminus of COI and a…
