A strong association between hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection and porphyria cutanea tarda (PCT) has been observed, but the implications of the viral infection in the metabolism of porphyrins in patients without clinical manifestations of PCT are not known. In 1989, the main agent causing non A non B hepatitis was identified as a RNA virus of the flavivirus family, with several serotypes, and was denominated virus C. At the present moment, the knowledge about the infection features and diseases that it causes has expanded thanks to the availability of reliable laboratory techniques to detect the antibody and the virus. BACKGROUND: Pseudoporphyria is a photosensitive bullous skin disease that is distinguished from porphyria cutanea tarda (PCT) by its normal porphyrin profile. Hereditary hemochromatosis (HH) is a common autosomal recessive disorder that can result in iron overload and a wide range of clinical complications, including hepatic cirrhosis, diabetes mellitus, hypopituitarism, hypogonadism, arthritis, and cardiomyopathy. delta-Aminolaevulinic acid (ALA) was determined by g.l.c. with electron-capture detection. Normal plasma level was 92 nmol/l (SD = 39, n = 89, range 24-270 nmol/l). The toxic effect of oxidized-heme, also known as hemin, is implicated in developing adverse clinical outcome in various hematolytic diseases. To simulate and reconstruct the molecular events associated with hemin exposure on circulating monocytes, we employed a THP-1 cell line based in vitro model.
