Postural control in Menière's disease and acoustic neurinoma when studied on a linearly oscillating platform.

We investigated the effect of visual control on postural stability on a moving platform in 36 patients with Menière's disease (MD) in 25 patients with operated acoustic neurinoma (AN) and in 19 healthy controls. The force platform was placed on rails and oscillated linearly at frequencies from 0.2 to 5 Hz at a constant velocity of 30 mm/s. In all subjects, the support surface oscillation produced postural instability that differed significantly from the base line stability. The body sway velocity increased almost linearly with the increase of stimulation frequency. The MD patients swayed more

Open-loop and closed-loop postural control mechanisms in Parkinson's disease: increased mediolateral activity during quiet standing.

Stabilogram-diffusion analysis was used to gain insights into how idiopathic Parkinson's disease (IPD) affects the postural control mechanisms involved in maintaining erect stance. Twenty-two subjects with IPD and twenty-four healthy elderly subjects were studied under eyes-open, quiet-standing conditions. The postural control mechanisms in the parkinsonian subjects, compared to the healthy elderly, were characterized by an increase in the effective stochastic activity in the mediolateral direction. Mediolateral posturographic measures were also associated with a history of falls and poor perf

Recovery of function after spinal cord hemisection in newborn and adult rats: differential effects on reflex and locomotor function.

It is often assumed that the response of the immature nervous system to injury is more robust and exhibits greater anatomical reorganization and greater recovery of function than in the adult. In the present experiments the extent of recovery of function after spinal cord injury at birth or at maturity was assessed. We used a series of quantitative tests of motor behavior to measure reflex responses and triggered movements and to examine different components of locomotion. Rats received a midthoracic "over-hemisection" at birth or as adults. The neonatal operates were allowed to mature and the

Biological and cognitive determination of the gravitational reference frame.

It is argued that space sickness is not so much a physiological problem, but a psychological one, having its roots in the perception of the environment, and its associated cognitive processing. This cognitive processing is argued to be that of field dependence and field independence, for which exist psychobiological and cognitive assessment tests. Since there is an obvious economic advantage in the use of cognite testing, it is recommended that this could be used as an initial screening when selecting for astronauts.

[Neurogenic bladder emptying disorder. History and clinical studies].

History and clinical examination in patients with neurogenic bladders reveal a lot of facts which postpone misinterpretation of urodynamic results and save time in diagnosing neurogenic disorders. They are under-stood as signs on the way to a clear and exact diagnosis.

Bilateral Accessory Plantaris Muscles With Variant Origins and Insertions: A Case Report.

The plantaris muscle typically originates at the lower portion of the lateral supracondylar line of the femur and oblique popliteal ligament of the knee joint and inserts medial to the Achilles tendon at the calcaneal tuberosity. Functionally, this muscle is unclear, as it could be for proprioception of the leg or flexion of the knee and ankle. Additionally, it is absent in some individuals. If present, the tendon is often mistaken for the tibial nerve, which is why it is known as the "fool's nerve." This case study involves the discovery of a bilateral plantaris muscle duplication in an 88-ye…

Evolution sculpts the brain's sensory adaptations. Because these adaptations differ markedly across species, it is challenging for humans to … ronments to avoid predation by dinosaurs, becoming heavily dependent on olfaction, audition, touch, proprioception, and vestibular signals for perceiving changes in the environment, while regressing vision. However, one group of mammals started evolving stereoscopic foveal vision to capture insects and fruit in the arboreal environment. Following the mass extinc …

Influence of Visual Perturbation on Reaching Accuracy in a Novel Dynamic Reaching Test Mimicking Ball Catching in a Virtual Reality Environment.

The purpose of the current study was to explore vision-proprioception integration patterns during a novel dynamic reaching test and a shoulder joint repositioning accuracy (JRA) test in virtual reality (VR). Twenty-seven physically healthy individuals performed the dynamic reaching test and JRA test, while vision of their tested hand position was manipulated in VR. Hand positions in both tests were captured with trackers on the participant's wrist, and the hand position was either projected accurately (accurate vision block; AB), not projected (no vision block; NB), or projected with an 8° off…

How does the use of smartphones affect cervical region structures?

Postural changes occurring during prolonged smartphone usage may be associated with impaired proprioception, altered musculoskeletal dynamics, and structural alterations in the cervical region. This study aimed to investigate the association between smartphone addictive use and cervical paraspinal muscles morphology and vertebral degeneration in patients with chronic neck pain (NP). This study included 119 patients with chronic NP. The cross-sectional areas (CSA) of the paraspinal muscles were quantified from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) slices using the software program ImageJ 1.53. The r…

CTRP10 is required for optimal motor function.

CTRP10, also known as C1QL2, is a secreted protein of the C1q family. In the central nervous system, CTRP10 is predominantly expressed by neurons and oligodendrocytes. Changes in brain expression of CTRP10 are associated with addiction, depression, and psychiatric disorder. CTRP10 also serves as a specific molecular marker for the excitatory neurons in the anterior thalamic nuclei complex, as well as for neurons that control proprioception and fine motor skills. Whether CTRP10 is required for nervous system control of behaviors is unknown. Here, we determine whether and how CTRP10 deficiency a…

Spinal cord syndrome: uncovering the risks of nitrous oxide abuse.

This case report describes a 24-year-old male who developed subacute combined degeneration (SCD) as a result of chronic recreational nitrous oxide (N₂O) abuse over a six-month period. The patient presented with a two-week history of progressive paresthesias, initially affecting the feet and subsequently extending to the hips, along with lower limb numbness. Neurological examination revealed ataxia, hypoesthesia, impaired proprioception, and hyperreflexia, while muscle strength remained intact. Cerebrospinal fluid analysis showed mild protein elevation, and laboratory tests indicated macrocytic…

Postural control imbalance in individuals with a minor lower extremity amputation: A scoping review.

BACKGROUND: Minor lower extremity amputations (LEA) compromise postural control and increase the risk of falls. This issue is exacerbated by conditions such as diabetes, which affect proprioception and sensorimotor mechanisms. While orthopedic devices, including prostheses and orthoses, are frequently prescribed, their specific role in restoring postural control remains underexplored. This scoping review aimed to synthesize current research on postural control in individuals with a minor LEA and to evaluate the interventions that may improve balance. METHODS: A systematic search was conducted…

Midline Hand Drift as a Possible Sign of Neurologic Disorder.

Movement and maintenance of posture involve many interacting factors that rely on a broad neural network. These factors include proprioception, body schema, and peripersonal and extrapersonal space, all of which may be affected in individuals with neurocognitive disorders. Frontal release signs are a common clinical finding in such individuals, resulting from the disruption of the related neural networks. In this case series, we discuss the potential clinical relevance of midline hand drift (MHD). MHD is a rarely documented physical exam finding in which one or both hands move toward the midli…

Movement Recognition and Muscle Force Estimation of Wrist Based on Electromyographic Signals of Forearm.

To enhance wrist impairment rehabilitation efficiency, self-rehabilitation training using healthy-side forearm sEMG was introduced, improving patient engagement and proprioception. A sEMG-based movement recognition and muscle force estimation algorithm was proposed to transmit the estimated results to a wrist rehabilitation robot. Dominant eigenvalues of raw forearm EMG signals were selected to construct a movement recognition model that included a BPNN, a voting decision, and an intensified algorithm. An experimental platform for muscle force estimation was established to measure sEMG under v…

Detecting the pterygomaxillary disjunction using an instrumented hammer: A cadaveric study.

BACKGROUND: In many maxillofacial surgeries, the surgeon must perform a pterygomaxillary disjunction in order to separate the jaw from the skull. The disjunction is performed using an osteotome which is impacted with a hammer until its tip crosses through the pterygoid plates. To determine whether the disjunction has occurred and avoid complications, surgeons still rely on their proprioception. METHODS: The aim of this study is to validate a vibroacoustic set-up constituted by an instrumented hammer equipped with a force sensor, aiming at detecting if the disjunction has occurred. To do so, f…
