Clinical study of the efficacy of four types of fluid treatment in mild and moderately severe burn shock in 134 patients showed that the prescription of oral alkaline solutions is sufficient in mild burn shock whereas in moderately severe shock fluids must be given by infusion. Intravenous infusion of glucose-electrolyte solutions is sufficiently effective in such cases.

A miner buried by a fall of rock in a Cornish tin mine developed a severe crush syndrome. He survived after early amputation of a crushed leg, peritoneal haemodialysis and other treatment.

A 72-years old man was severely injured when a lorry rolled back and pinned him down, causing contusion of the chest, fractures of ribs 3-10 on the right and haemothorax. Treatment of the chest injuries was by drainage and by positive end-expiratory pressure ventilation because of the development of severe pneumonia with wet lung. Persistent renal insufficiency, a gastro-intestinal haemorrhage and diabetes also required treatment. The patient developed septic endomyocarditis as a late complication, possibly attributable to the central venous catheter. All pulmonary and extrapulmonary injuries

BACKGROUND: Trauma remains the leading cause of death in all age groups of children, yet the role of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) in pediatric trauma remains unclear. The goal of this study was to evaluate contemporary ECMO practice patterns for pediatric trauma in both acute (<24 hours of trauma) and subacute (≥24 hours) settings.
METHODS: Multicenter, retrospective study of children aged 0-20 years cannulated to ECMO after a trauma (Total Study Population). Collected data included trauma mechanism, complications, and outcomes. A sub-cohort termed Traumatic Injury Population ex

BACKGROUND: Resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta (REBOA) is being increasingly adopted to manage noncompressible torso hemorrhage, but a recent analysis of the 2015 to 2016 Trauma Quality Improvement Project (TQIP) data set showed that placement of REBOA was associated with higher rates of death, lower extremity amputation, and acute kidney injury (AKI). We expand this analysis by including the 2017 data set, quantifying the potential role of residual confounding, and distinguishing between traumatic and ischemic lower extremity amputation.
METHODS: This retrospective stu

BACKGROUND: Traumatic noniatrogenic vascular injuries in children are rare and rarely discussed in literature. Pediatric vascular injuries pose a set of challenges mainly because of continued growth and development in a child or adolescent. The purpose of the study is to characterize management strategies and outcomes in these cases.
METHODS: This is a single-center retrospective review of patients less than age 18 years (pediatric age) with acute, noniatrogenic traumatic vascular injuries between January 2009 and December 2015. Patient's demographics, injury characteristics, surgical managem

This review aims to answer the most common questions in routine surgical practice during the first 48 h of blunt chest trauma (BCT) management. Two authors identified relevant manuscripts published since January 1994 to January 2014. Using preferred reporting items for systematic reviews and meta-analyses statement, they focused on the surgical management of BCT, excluded both child and vascular injuries and selected 80 studies. Tension pneumothorax should be promptly diagnosed and treated by needle decompression closely followed with chest tube insertion (Grade D). All traumatic pneumothorace

PURPOSE: Moderate-to-severe pelvic ring fractures are associated with high morbidity and mortality despite advances in resuscitation, development in trauma systems and multispecialty haemorrhage control. This study aimed to describe the management strategies and clinical outcomes of moderate-to-severe pelvic ring fractures over a 10-year period at an Australian Level I Trauma Centre.
METHODS: A retrospective observational cohort study was performed of patients aged ≥ 16 years with moderate-to-severe pelvic ring fractures (Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS) ≥ 3) treated between January 2015 and De

We examined risk factors for combat-related extremity wound infections (CEWI) among U.S. military patients injured in Iraq and Afghanistan (2009-2012). Patients with ≥1 combat-related, open extremity wound admitted to a participating U.S. hospital (≤7 days postinjury) were retrospectively assessed. The population was classified based upon most severe injury (amputation, open fracture without amputation, or open soft-tissue injury defined as non-fracture/non-amputation wounds). Among 1271 eligible patients, 395 (31%) patients had ≥1 amputation, 457 (36%) had open fractures, and 419 (33%) had op
