An examination of injuries in major league soccer. The inaugural season.

We analyzed the injury data collected from the 10 teams (237 players) that constituted Major League Soccer during its inaugural season. The overall injury rate was 6.2 per 1000 hours of participation. An injury rate of 2.9 per 1000 hours was noted for practice and 35.3 per 1000 hours was found for games. The difference was statistically significant. With regard to severity, 36% of injuries (143 of 399) were categorized as an incident (no time lost from competition). Of the 256 injuries that caused the player to lose playing time, 59% were classified as minor (<7 days lost), 28% as moderate (7

The effectiveness of the parachutist ankle brace in reducing ankle injuries in an airborne ranger battalion.

The purpose of this study was to determine if the parachutist ankle brace (PAB) decreases the number and severity of ankle injuries in an airborne Ranger battalion. A retrospective study was performed covering a 38-month period. A computer database was used to track all jump injuries with a diagnosis of ankle pain, sprain, or fracture. The frequency was calculated for ankle injuries per 1,000 jumps and the average length of medically restricted duty per ankle injury. A total of 13,782 static line parachute jumps were conducted during the study period. Without the PAB, 35 ankle injuries were se

Severe hyperflexion sprains of the lower cervical spine in adults.

Severe sprains of the cervical spine result from a traumatic rupture of the intervertebral disc and ligaments. Although rare, these lesions may lead to a significant kyphotic deformity if they are not surgically treated. The treatment of such a kyphotic deformity may consist of surgical fixation of the lesion through either an anterior or posterior approach. A retrospective study has been done examining 44 severe cervical sprains in 41 patients surgically treated through a posterior approach, using Roy-Camille plates. With an average followup of 29 months (range, 6-60 months), 73% of the patie

Occult osseous injuries after ankle sprains: incidence, location, pattern, and age.

We retrospectively evaluated 109 magnetic resonance studies in patients with prior ankle sprains to investigate the frequency and pattern of bone bruises. Patterns of bone bruises were then correlated with the ligaments injured. In addition, the age of the injury was determined from medical records to correlate the presence of bone bruises with the temporal period from injury. Bone bruises occurred in 39% of ankle sprains. Multiple bone bruises were seen in 40% of those with bone bruises; they occurred more frequently in patients with multiple ligaments injured. The marrow changes may be secon

Sacroiliac sprain: an overlooked cause of back pain.

Since sacroiliac sprain syndrome is not a common disorder, it may be overlooked as a cause of low back pain. Even though the sacroiliac joint is very strong, it can incur painful injury. The diagnosis of sacroiliac sprain syndrome requires more than just tenderness on palpation of the sacroiliac area. Certain maneuvers, such as Patrick's test and the sacroiliac compression test, are useful in establishing the diagnosis. Proper treatment consists of bed rest, heat, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and muscle relaxants. Physical therapy and manipulation may also help. In recalcitrant cases,

An epidemiological study of football (soccer) injuries in Benin City, Nigeria.

BACKGROUND: The increase in popularity of soccer and expectations from players make significant numbers of soccer injuries conceivable. Concerns have been expressed about the demand placed on the modern-day footballer and translation of these physical and mental demands into injuries. Despite the popularity and importance of the game of soccer in Benin, no detailed study on the occurrence of soccer injury has been carried out. OBJECTIVE: The study sets out to describe and assess the determinants and effects of soccer injuries. METHODOLOGY: Seven clubs (196 players) from the premiership, prof

Case Report: Unilateral resistance and impact loading during knee rehabilitation after grade-2 MCL injury was associated with hip-specific aBMD accrual in an elite female road cyclist.

BACKGROUND: Low areal bone mineral density (aBMD) is prevalent in elite road cyclists due to non-weight-bearing training loads and, at times, low energy availability (EA). Real-world, site-specific skeletal responses to targeted loading during rehabilitation remain insufficiently characterized. CASE PRESENTATION: A 24-year-old WorldTour-level female road cyclist with low aBMD (Z-score ≤ -1.1) initiated a periodized resistance and impact loading program and daily vitamin D (800 IU). Three fasted-morning DXA and venous blood assessments (Oct-2024; Mar-2025; May-2025) were paired with training l

Severe injuries in football players. Influencing factors.

The aims of this prospective study were to analyze factors related to the occurrence of severe football injuries in players of different ages (14 to 42 years) and different skill levels (local teams to first league teams). In the Czech Republic, 398 players were followed up for 1 year, during which time they sustained 686 injuries. Of these, 113 (16.5%) were severe injuries. Ninety-seven severe injuries (86%) were able to be documented in detail. Trauma was the cause of 81.5% of the injuries and overuse was the cause of 18.5%. Joint sprains predominated (30%), followed by fractures (16%), musc
