Predictors of five-year mortality in older Canadians: the Canadian Study of Health and Aging.

OBJECTIVE: Based on the Canadian Study of Health and Aging (CSHA), to determine the importance of cognitive status, sociodemographic factors, functional status, and other health related factors as predictors of 5-year overall mortality in older Canadians. DESIGN, SETTING AND PARTICIPANTS: Two partially overlapping groups from the Canadian Study of Health and Aging (1991) were identified: (1) older people living in the community (n = 8949) who had a screening interview (larger sample, fewer variables) and (2) older people who underwent an extensive clinical examination (smaller sample, more ob

ViT-MultiRAGNet: A scalable and reliable retrieval-augmented Vision Transformer framework for memory-guided feature fusion multi-modal mammogram classification.

BACKGROUND: Diagnosing breast cancer with mammography continues to be an incidentally challenging process because of the numerous different ways of acquiring the images, the vast difference in appearance between lesions, and the minimal use of historical information regarding patients being considered when making a diagnosis. In addition, many current deep learning algorithms use static weight values based on the most recent image taken only, often failing to relate a current case to similar historical examples and to incorporate retrieval-based contextual evidence during inference. The role of AI-driven communication in delirium prevention, detection, and care for critically ill ICU patients: A systematic review with inductive thematic synthesis.

BACKGROUND: Delirium remains one of the most consequential complications among critically ill patients in ICUs, exerting profound effects on morbidity, mortality, and annual healthcare costs exceeding $81 billion. Communication barriers between sedated or mechanically ventilated patients, their families, and multidisciplinary teams frequently delay recognition and impair management of delirium. This systematic review examines how AI-driven communication technologies can address these barriers, enhance early detection, and promote more integrated, patient- and family-centered delirium care. Harnessing the Power of Technology to Transform Delirium Severity Measurement in the Intensive Care Unit: Protocol for a Prospective Cohort Study.

BACKGROUND: Delirium, an acute brain dysfunction, is a complication in up to 50% of patients in the intensive care unit (ICU). Measuring and mitigating delirium severity can reduce associated morbidity and improve long-term health outcomes post discharge. However, the perceived complexity of the available delirium detection tools and clinical workload limits the routine assessment of delirium severity. Developing a passive digital marker for delirium severity, combining routine electronic health record (EHR) and computer vision technology data, could be an implementable, scalable, and sustaina

Interventions for Mooren's ulcer.

BACKGROUND: Mooren's ulcer is a chronic, painful peripheral ulcer of the cornea. Its cause is unknown but it can or will lead to loss of vision if untreated. Severe pain is common in patients with Mooren's ulcer and the eye(s) may be intensely reddened, inflamed and photophobic, with tearing. The disease is rare in the northern hemisphere but more common in southern and central Africa, China and the Indian subcontinent. There are a number of treatments used such as anti-inflammatory drugs (steroidal and non-steroidal), cytotoxic drugs (topical and systemic), conjunctivectomy and cornea debride

From Episodic Checks to Continuous Clinical Monitoring: Nursing Policy Viewpoint on AI-Enabled Oral and Nutrition Risk Detection in Long-Term Care.

Oral disease and malnutrition are common and closely linked problems in long-term care (LTC). Monthly weights, occasional diet reviews, and infrequent dental assessments can miss gradual decline. Recent tools, including computer-vision meal-intake estimation and smartphone-based gingival screening, create an opportunity for more timely clinical monitoring when limited data capture is embedded into routine care. This viewpoint proposes a nursing-led policy framework for AI-enabled oral and nutrition risk detection in nursing homes. The framework emphasizes protected oral health and nutrition ch

Binocular Vision-Based Image Extraction and Feature Analysis of Weld Beads in 316L Wire Arc Additive Manufacturing.

To address the challenges of low image quality and difficult feature extraction of weld beads caused by the complex dynamics of the molten pool, intense arc light, and spatter interference during wire arc additive manufacturing (WAAM) of 316L stainless steel, this paper develops a binocular vision-based dynamic molten pool tracking system and conducts image processing and feature analysis. Two high-speed CMOS cameras are employed to capture images of the molten pool and weld bead. Camera calibration is performed to convert pixel coordinates to world coordinates. The denoising performance of fi

Efficient Slice-Patch Selection Transformer for Interpretable Alzheimer's Disease Diagnosis Using Structural MRI.

Structural magnetic resonance imaging (sMRI) plays a crucial role in the early screening of Alzheimer's disease (AD). Recent advances in vision Transformers (ViTs) demonstrate strong potential for sMRI-based computer-aided diagnosis by capturing long-range dependencies. However, their high computational demands and opaque decision-making hinder clinical application. To address these challenges, we explore the inherent structural redundancy in brain sMRI and propose an efficient and interpretable slice-patch selection Transformer (SPSFormer) framework that selectively focuses on task-relevant s

Stereotypic behaviors across species: From neurobiological mechanisms to farm animal welfare.

Stereotypic behaviors, characterized by repetitive, fixed, and seemingly functionless behavioral patterns, are critical indicator of compromised animal welfare and neuropsychiatric disorders. While stereotypic behaviors have been extensively studied in humans and laboratory animals, the neurobiological mechanisms of farm animals and their cross-species commonalities remain to be systematically elucidated. This review summarizes the progress in the research on stereotypic behaviors, with a particular focus on comparing the phenotypic similarities among humans, laboratory animals, and farm anima

Predicting the progression of proliferative diabetic retinopathy: Pathophysiology, imaging phenotypes, and determinants of disease persistence despite therapy.

Proliferative diabetic retinopathy (PDR) is a leading cause of severe vision loss in working-aged adults and represents the end stage of chronic neurovascular injury in diabetes. Despite advances in screening and treatment, including panretinal photocoagulation (PRP), intravitreal anti-vascular endothelial growth factor (anti-VEGF) agents, and pars plana vitrectomy (PPV), outcomes remain heterogeneous: many eyes stabilise, whereas others progress to vitreous hemorrhage, tractional retinal detachment, or neovascular glaucoma despite apparently adequate therapy. This review synthesizes current k

Recognition of giant cell arteritis and calcified carotid artery atheromas in dental practice: systematic review and meta-analysis.

OBJECTIVE: Giant cell arteritis (GCA) is a granulomatous vasculitis affecting medium- and large-sized arteries, most commonly the temporal arteries. Delayed recognition can lead to severe complications, including irreversible vision loss and stroke. Dentists routinely obtain panoramic radiographs for dental assessment, where calcified carotid artery atheromas (CCAA) may appear as incidental findings in the cervical region. This study systematically evaluated the incidence of suspected CCAA detected on panoramic radiographs obtained for dental indications and considered the clinical relevance o
