Communicative Blame in Online Communication of the COVID-19 Pandemic: Computational Approach of Stigmatizing Cues and Negative Sentiment Gauged With Automated Analytic Techniques.

BACKGROUND: Information about a new coronavirus emerged in 2019 and rapidly spread around the world, gaining significant public attention and attracting negative bias. The use of stigmatizing language for the purpose of blaming sparked a debate. OBJECTIVE: This study aims to identify social stigma and negative sentiment toward the blameworthy agents in social communities. METHODS: We enabled a tailored text-mining platform to identify data in their natural settings by retrieving and filtering online sources, and constructed vocabularies and learning word representations from natural language

Evaluating the physical fit of receiver-in-the-ear hearing aids in infants.

BACKGROUND: In spite of early identification and intervention efforts achieved by Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) programs, many infants with hearing loss experience delays in early vocabulary development in comparison to peers with normal hearing (Mayne, Yoshinaga-Itano, Sedey, 2000a; Mayne, Yoshinaga-Itano, Sedey, Carey, 2000b; Moeller et al, 2007a, 2007b). One of the several factors that may contribute to individual differences in outcomes is inconsistent hearing aid use in this age group. This may be associated with the physical fit when using traditional behind-the-ear (BT…

Sex differences in developmental reading disability: new findings from 4 epidemiological studies.

CONTEXT: An influential article published in 1990 claimed that the increased rate of reading disability in boys was a consequence of referra … years in 1999; reading was assessed on the British Ability Scales II and IQ on the British Picture Vocabulary Scales II. The Environmental Risk Longitudinal Twin Study (E-Risk) comprised 2163 twin children from England and Wales (49.1% male) identified at birth in 1994 and 1995 and included administration of the Test of Word Reading Efficiency at age 7 year …

A study of idiom comprehension in children with semantic-pragmatic difficulties. Part II: Between-groups results and discussion.

Using a play-based methodology and a symptom checklist, this study investigated idiom comprehension in 26 children aged between 6-11 who wer … ess among these children that the literal meaning is inappropriate in the absence of adequate idiom vocabulary. It may also reflect difficulty in retrieving known idioms from memory and/or in selecting the most appropriate meaning from several possibilities in context. Despite relative weakness, the children with semantic-pragmatic difficulties displayed app …

[Panic: attack and disorder. History of the word and concepts].

The history of the word panic, of the concepts of Panic attack and of Panic Disorder is a complex one. The adjective word panic, derived fro … nd the substantive (and today of the verb to panic) from their technical meanings. In the technical vocabulary the substantive word refers on the one side to an abnormal group behaviour whose mechanisms, when it appears in an army by also elsewhere, are studied by social psychopathology. Cortical networks for vision and language in dyslexic and normal children of variable socio-economic status.

In dyslexia, anomalous activations have been described in both left temporo-parietal language cortices and in left ventral visual occipito-temporal cortex. However, the reproducibility, task-dependency, and presence of these brain anomalies in childhood rather than adulthood remain debated. We probed the large-scale organization of ventral visual and spoken language areas in dyslexic children using minimal target-detection tasks that were performed equally well by all groups. In 23 normal and 23 dyslexic 10-year-old children from two different socio-economic status (SES) backgrounds, we compar

Classification integration and reclassification using constraint databases.

OBJECTIVE: We propose classification integration as a new method for data integration from different sources. We also propose reclassification as a new method of combining existing medical classifications for different classes. BACKGROUND: In many problems the raw data are already classified according to a set of features but need to be reclassified. Data reclassification is usually achieved using data integration methods that require the raw data, which may not be available or sharable because of privacy and legal concerns. METHODOLOGY: We introduce general classification integration and re

Teaching Latino parents to support the multi-symbol message productions of their children who require AAC.

Many children who require augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) have difficulties shifting from the single- to multi-symbol stage of language development. Ensuring that children who use AAC receive evidence-based interventions to address this problem is critical. Furthermore, there has been little AAC treatment efficacy research to date that addresses the needs of multicultural populations, particularly those of Latino children who use AAC and their families. To address these issues, the current investigation used a mixed methodology, which included a focus group to determine if any

Children with developmental language delay at 24 months of age: results of a diagnostic work-up.

The aim of this study was to evaluate if a diagnostic work-up should be recommended for 2-year-old children with developmental language delay (LD), or if the widely chosen 'wait and see' strategy is adequate. Children with LD were identified in paediatric practices during routine developmental check-ups using a German parent-report screening questionnaire (adapted from the MacArthur Communicative Development Inventories). A standardized German instrument and the Netherlands version of Bayley Scales of Infant Development (2nd ed.) were used to assess language ability and nonverbal cognitive dev

Temporal and visual source memory deficits among ecstasy/polydrug users.

OBJECTIVES: We wished to investigate whether source memory judgements are adversely affected by recreational illicit drug use. METHOD: Sixty-two ecstasy/polydrug users and 75 non ecstasy users completed a source memory task, in which they tried to determine whether or not a word had been previously presented and if so, attempted to recall the format, location and temporal position in which the word had occurred. RESULTS: While not differing in terms of the number of hits and false positive responses, ecstasy/polydrug users adopted a more liberal decision criterion when judging if a word had

Is there a potential role for attention bias modification in pain patients? Results of 2 randomised, controlled trials.

Potential applications of attention bias modification (ABM) for acute and chronic pain patients are investigated. In study 1, 54 acute back pain patients (46 of whom completed the study) were recruited at their initial physiotherapy session and randomised to receive 1 session of ABM or placebo. Patients were followed up 3 months later. Participants who were randomised to receive ABM reported less average (P=0.001) and current pain (P=0.008) and experienced pain for fewer days (P=0.01) than those who received placebo. In study 2, 34 chronic pain patients were recruited and randomly assigned to

Reading without the left ventral occipito-temporal cortex.

The left ventral occipito-temporal cortex (LvOT) is thought to be essential for the rapid parallel letter processing that is required for skilled reading. Here we investigate whether rapid written word identification in skilled readers can be supported by neural pathways that do not involve LvOT. Hypotheses were derived from a stroke patient who acquired dyslexia following extensive LvOT damage. The patient followed a reading trajectory typical of that associated with pure alexia, re-gaining the ability to read aloud many words with declining performance as the length of words increased. Using

Glocalizing AfriMEDS: a decolonial, Ubuntu-grounded roadmap for operationalizing global competency standards in African medical education.

BACKGROUND: Training community-responsive physicians for South Africa's under-resourced rural and peri-urban settings remains a defining challenge for African medical education. The AfriMEDS framework, adopted in 2014, succeeded in establishing a shared national competency vocabulary and in standardizing the technical, medical-expert foundations of undergraduate training; it has not yet, however, authentically integrated Indigenous Knowledge Systems (IKS), Ubuntu ethics, indigenous-language proficiency, or formal partnership with Traditional Health Practitioners (THPs).
