This study investigated the relationship between form-deprivation myopia and amblyopic deficit. Five rhesus monkeys underwent monocular form-deprivation beginning at 24 ± 2 days of age. Lightweight helmets held a light-perception only Bangerter filter over the right eye and a plano lens over the left eye. A 9-year-old boy with Duane's retraction syndrome and morning glory syndrome is presented. The right eye showed a grayish-pink optic disc, which had a deep excavation containing a white mass in its center and was surrounded by an annulus of pigment disturbance, i.e., consistent with the features of morning glory syndrome. Our experience in the surgical treatment of unilateral cataracts in children has been presented. Over two-thirds of the patients who were visually mature at the onset of their cataract regained useful vision in the operated eye while less than 10% of the visually immature patients did so. Our findings approximate those found in the literature. While improved visual acuity is the most important objective of unilateral cataract surgery in children, other benefits such as a cleared optical axis often make such surgery desirable, even when the prospect for visual recovery is poor.

AIM: To determine the visual functions, at age 10-12 years, of a geographically based cohort of children of birth weight less than 1701 g. The results were compared to a group of children born at full term.

PURPOSE: To present a follow-up on children with persistent fetal vasculature (PFV) when surgery was not performed.
METHODS: From January 1992 through June 2001, 31 infants (31 eyes) with PFV were evaluated to document the number of eyes operated on versus eyes not operated on to determine whether the latter group remained stationary or became worse.

Sixty-two patients, 48 with a diagnosis of persistent hyperplastic primary vitreous (PHPV) and 14 with monocular congenital cataract (MCC) are reported.
