The extensive use of chlorpyrifos (CPF) in agriculture has led to persistent soil contamination, posing serious risks to environmental and human health. Developing sustainable, in situ remediation strategies is therefore a priority. This study evaluated an integrated plant-microbe-biochar system for the remediation of CPF-contaminated soils. Indigenous CPF-degrading bacteria were isolated from agricultural soils and screened for degradation efficiency in mineral salts medium (MSM) and soil microcosms. The most efficient isolate, designated C78, was identified by 16S rRNA gene sequencing as Kle

Salinity stress is a major environmental constraint limiting rice growth and yield. Seed nanopriming with calcium oxide nanomaterials (CaO NMs) in combination with arbuscular mycorrhizal fungus (AMF) has recently emerged as an effective strategy to enhance resilience, although the underlying responses remain unexplored. In the present study, rice seeds primed with CaO NMs (80 ppm) and inoculated with the AMF Claroideoglomus claroideum at transplanting were evaluated under 175 mM NaCl stress to assess their effects on plant performance and metabolic responses. The combined treatment significant

In the Arctic, rapid warming is altering disturbance regimes, creating an urgent need to assess the ecological stability of these relatively pristine ecosystems. The Arctic landscape has thousands of lakes that are experiencing both gradual, persistent disturbances (e.g., warming) and increased frequency and intensity of pulse disturbances (e.g., land-surface failures). To assess the ecological stability of lake communities in a changing environment, we analyzed long-term data (14-39 years) on zooplankton communities and environmental variables from 25 lakes in arctic Alaska. We characterized

Drought has emerged as one of the most severe and widespread environmental stresses affecting plants. Crops exposed to varying levels of drought, ranging from moderate to severe, often experience notable declines in yield or reduced harvest quality. Investigating the molecular mechanisms and cellular factors involved in plant defense against drought is crucial-not only for advancing our understanding of these processes but also for ensuring sustainable food production and supporting humanity's survival. Our previous work identified the small intrinsically disordered protein DSS1 (deleted in sp

Mango bacterial black spot (MBBS) disease caused by Xanthomonas citri pv. mangiferaeindicae (Xcm) is a global problem that threatens mango productivity and quality worldwide. However, our understanding of mango physiological and proteomic responses to Xcm infection on leaves in different cultivars remains limited. Herein, we explored how two mango cultivars (Guifei and Aomang) respond to Xcm challenge at the physiological, biochemical, and proteomic levels at 6 and 12 ad post-inoculation. Our results revealed that Xcm infection induced progressive disease development in both cultivars as Guife

Due to its similarity in hydrophobic properties to perfluorooctanesulfonic acid (PFOS), 6:2 fluorotelomer sulfonic acid (6:2 FTSA) has emerged as a key substitute for PFOS. Its presence in aquatic environments, along with the coexistence of polyethylene terephthalate (PET), may impact the growth of aquatic plants and ecosystem stability. This study explored the changes in antioxidant defense, photosynthetic system, and metabolic responses of water hyacinths (Eichhornia crassipes) under individual and combined exposure conditions. The results indicated that water hyacinth efficiently accumulate

To support conservation efforts, accurate mapping of marine organism community' distribution has become more critical than ever before. While previous mapping endeavours have primarily focused on easily accessible shallow-water habitats, there remains limited knowledge about the ecosystems lying beyond SCUBA diving depths, such as mesophotic coral ecosystems (MCEs, ~30-150 m). MCEs are important habitats from an ecological and conservation perspective, yet little is known about the environmental factors that shape these ecosystems and their distribution, particularly in the Indian Ocean region

In this study, a deep-water culture (DWC) hydroponic system integrating carbon dioxide nanobubble (CNB) water and biochar (BC) was explored as a potential substrate for carbon and nutrient management. Lettuce seedlings were cultivated under varying substrates, including tap water (TW) and deionized water (DW) with and without CNB and BC at concentrations of 0.1 or 0.5 g/L. CNB with BC treatments showed significant concentrations of Ca, Cu, Fe, K and Zn in lettuce tissues. BC treatments resulted in decreases of Cu, Zn and Fe in the solution by 24.82 %, 36.78 % and 50.45 %, respectively. CNB tre

Drought is a major challenge for agriculture worldwide, being one of the main causes of losses in plant production. Various studies reported that some soil's bacteria can improve plant tolerance to environmental stresses by the enhancement of water and nutrient uptake by plants. The Atacama Desert in Chile, the driest place on earth, harbors a largely unexplored microbial richness. This study aimed to evaluate the ability of various Bacillus sp. from the hyper arid Atacama Desert in the improvement in tolerance to drought stress in lettuce (Lactuca sativa L. var. capitata, cv. Microplastics (MPs) and antibiotics are novel water pollutants that have attracted increasing attention. Constructed wetlands (CWs) are widely applied treating various types of polluted water. How these two new pollutants affect plants and microorganisms in CWs, especially deciphering the unknown roles of MPs size and concentration, is of great essential. Here, five CW treatments with submerged macrophyte Myriophyllum aquaticum were established to treat oxytetracycline (OTC) antibiotic-polluted water. The effects of polystyrene (PS) nanoplastics (NPs) (700 nm) and MPs (90-110 μm) on plant and

Cold stress is one of the major constraints limiting the productivity of many important crops, including tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.) production and quality worldwide. However, the role of magnesium (Mg) nutrition in plants has been frequently overlooked, especially under cold stress, and Mg deficiency adversely affects plant growth and development. Here, we evaluated the influence of Mg under cold stress on tobacco morphology, nutrient uptake, photosynthetic and quality attributes. The tobacco plants were grown under different levels of cold stress, i.e., 8°C, 12°C, 16°C, including with a c

The Pampean plains in South America are well-known for their livestock and agricultural productivity. The peri-urban watershed of El Pescado Creek (Central-Eastern Argentina) has been significantly modified in the last few years due to local land-use changes. This work aims to analyze the dynamics of nutrient content associated with the surface water-groundwater relationship in this watershed and to define the trophic state of the watercourse. Sampling sites were selected for both surface water and groundwater analyses, and field surveys were carried out during the spring and summer of 2017. H

Cyanobacterial blooms producing toxic metabolites occur frequently in freshwater, yet the environmental behaviors of complex cyanobacterial metabolites remain largely unknown. In this study, the seasonal and spatial variations of several classes of cyanotoxins (microcystins, cylindrospermopsins, saxitoxins) and taste-and-odor (T&O) compounds (β-cyclocitral, β-ionone, geosmin, 2-methylisoborneol) in Lake Taihu were simultaneously investigated for the first time. The total cyanotoxins were dominated by microcystins with concentrations highest in November (mean 2209 ng/L) and lowest in February (

Antibiotics are considered emerging pollutants as their presence in the environment is increasingly common. Although their environmental concentrations are generally low, they can pose risk to organisms through bioaccumulation, causing sublethal effects. Furthermore, solar radiation can trigger reactions in certain compounds after their accumulation within organisms or in the environment. Toxicity and photoinduced toxicity of oxytetracycline (OTC, widely used antibiotic in salmon aquaculture) on Daphnia magna (Crustacea, Cladocera) and microalgae Raphidocelis subcapitata (Chlorophyceae) as its
