BACKGROUND: Although hand dermatitis (HD) represents a frequent occupational issue for many health professionals, little is known about the prevalence and distribution of HD among veterinarians, particularly in Australia.

We report the case of a 46-year-old veterinarian who developed rhinoconjunctivitis and contact urticaria (CU) on his hands and forearms after contact with dog's milk. Prick tests results revealed a positive reactions to Parietaria pollens, Dermatophagoides farinae and D.pteronyssinus, dander of cat, grass, olive (+++), and to undiluted dog's milk (++++). Control prick tests with dog's milk performed in 5 healthy veterinarians were negative. We consider it important to take into account the possibility that dog's milk may be the aetiological agent of CU in veterinarians.

BACKGROUND: Patients with hand eczema frequently have a history of atopic dermatitis or atopy. No specific morphologic pattern of hand eczema helps distinguish atopic hand eczema from other etiologies. There are few studies of hand eczema prevalence and morphology in a well-defined population of patients with atopic dermatitis.
METHODS: We evaluated 777 consecutive patients with atopic dermatitis (diagnosed by standard criteria) for hand involvement. An additional 100 patients had further evaluations, including evaluation of the historical and morphologic characteristics of their hand eczema.

About 21% of the patients with occupational contact dermatitis registered in the Information Network of Departments of Dermatology (IVDK) in the years 1995-2001 were patch tested due to suspected rubber glove allergy. Hydroxyurea is a cytotoxic chemotherapeutic agent used for myelodysplasia. The adverse cutaneous effects due to hydroxyurea include leg ulcers, hyperpigmentation of the skin and nails, a lichen planus-like eruption, lupus erythematosus, and a dermatomyositis-like eruption. We present a case of hydroxyurea-induced dermatomyositis-like eruption and review the features of this entity as previously reported.

Acral erythema limited to the fingers or the hands has been described in systemic disease. We report the case of a 17-year-old patient who had undergone lung transplantation for cystic fibrosis. Between 1995 and 1998, 174 dental personnel were referred as patients to the Department of Occupational and Environmental Dermatology, Stockholm. After clinical examination, 131 were patch tested with the Swedish standard series and 109 with a dental screening series. Scant information is available concerning the occurrence and evolution of chemotherapy-induced acral erythema in children receiving intravenous high-dose methotrexate (MTX). Two groups of patients were studied, one with known contact allergy to colophony and hand eczema, 'colophony patients', and the other consisted of patients who suspected that their eczema was caused by contact with paper, 'paper patients'. 174 consecutive patients with suspected cutting fluid dermatitis were investigated in 2 occupational dermatology clinics. 43% showed allergic reactions which were thought to be relevant to their dermatitis. Irritant contact dermatitis occurred in 63%, but only in 21% was it thought to be the sole diagnosis. Biocides, especially formaldehyde releasers, were the commonest cause of allergic reactions in a cutting fluid patch test series.
