Single studies are often cited to support claims of nutritional soundness or unsoundness regarding vegan or meat-based pet foods when compared to nutritional guidelines from authorities such as the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO), the European Pet Food Industry Federation (FEDIAF), and the National Research Council (NRC). However, there is little overarching evidence concerning the nutritional soundness of these different pet food types. Such overarching evidence is increasingly important as alternative vegan or meat-based pet food types become more available, such as in

UNLABELLED: The vector-borne disease leishmaniasis, caused by Leishmania species protozoa, is transmitted to humans by phlebotomine sand flies. Development of Leishmania to infective metacyclic promastigotes in the insect gut, a process termed metacyclogenesis, is an essential prerequisite for transmission. Based on the hypothesis that vector gut microbiota influence the development of virulent parasites, we sequenced midgut microbiomes in the sand fly Lutzomyia longipalpis with or without Leishmania infantum infection. Sucrose-fed sand flies contained a highly diverse, stable midgut microbiom

Between 1976 and 1983 in the Busoga Region in Uganda 10,414 male and 9,560 female patients were detected with trypanosomiasis. Prior to the onset of the epidemic, Glossina f. fuscipes, the sole vector, had broken through the tsetse control barrier and had spread to cover most of the region. The fly was further observed to be resting in Lantana plants and coffee and banana plantations which are widespread in the area. A close and regular contact was thus established between man and fly. It was observed that the young and engergetic persons first became infected, but as the epidemic unfolded the

In this work, we describe the insecticidal activity against Spodoptera frugiperda of flavanone derivatives (naringin, naringenin and hesperidin) complexed to copper (II). For the assays, the compounds were incorporated into an artificial diet and offered to S. frugiperda during its larval period. The duration of larval and pupal phases, the weight of pupae and the percentage of dead insects at the end of the larval phase were evaluated. Among the tested compounds, the free flavanones 1 and 3 and the complexes 4 and 6 showed a shortening of the larval phase when compared to the control. Complex

BACKGROUND: Sand flies of the species Nyssomyia umbratilis (Diptera: Psychodidae: Phlebotominae) are vectors of the parasite Leishmania (Viannia) guyanensis, one of the etiological agents of cutaneous leishmaniasis in the Amazon region. In addition, Ny. umbratilis is a cryptic species, with populations showing differences in their ability to transmit the parasite. For instance, populations of Ny. umbratilis from the Manacapuru municipality (MAN), located on the south bank of the Negro river, in the Amazonas state of Brazil, shows refractoriness to Leishmania infection, while populations from R

In computational modelling of sensory-motor control, the dynamics of muscle contraction is an important determinant of movement timing and joint stiffness. This is particularly so in animals with many slow muscles, as is the case in insects-many of which are important models for sensory-motor control. A muscle model is generally used to transform motoneuronal input into muscle force. Although standard models exist for vertebrate muscle innervated by many motoneurons, there is no agreement on a parametric model for single motoneuron stimulation of invertebrate muscle. Although several different

ETHNOPHARMACOLOGICAL RELEVANCE: Essential oils and essential oil bearing medicinal and culinary plants have a long tradition of being used to combat infection, treat various conditions, and promote and restore health. Mint oils are traditionally applied to repel insects and treat various conditions including wounds, skin infections, inflammation, eczema, urticaria, psoriasis, scabies and insect bites. They are among essential oils promoted as a natural way to prevent tick-borne diseases and recommended as ingredients in various homemade repellent mixtures and tick-bite treatments.

BACKGROUND: Opsins are light sensitive receptors associated with visual processes. Insects typically possess opsins that are stimulated by ultraviolet, short and long wavelength (LW) radiation. Six putative LW-sensitive opsins predicted in the yellow fever mosquito, Aedes aegypti and malaria mosquito, Anopheles gambiae, and eight in the southern house mosquito, Culex quinquefasciatus, suggest gene expansion in the Family Culicidae (mosquitoes) relative to other insects. Here we report the first detailed molecular and evolutionary analyses of LW opsins in three mosquito vectors, with a goal to

BACKGROUND: Replacement of wild-type mosquito populations with genetically modified versions is being explored as a potential strategy to control vector-borne diseases. Due to lower expected relative fitness of transgenic individuals, transgenes must be driven into populations for these scenarios to be successful. Several gene drive mechanisms exist in a theoretical sense but none are currently workable in mosquitoes. Even if strategies were workable, it would be very difficult to recall released transgenes in the event of unforeseen consequences. What is needed is a way to test transgenes in

BACKGROUND: Integrating human behavioral data with data on malaria vector biting rates can help to quantify human exposure to malaria vectors and identify gaps in protection; however, to date, the availability of necessary human location and behavior data have been more limited as compared to that of corresponding entomological data. To expand the data available for use in vector-human data integrations, this case example explored the process and interpretations of integrating human behavior estimates from the Malaria Behavior Survey (MBS), a large-scale cross-sectional survey measuring behavi

Background/Objectives: Significant progress in malaria control has been achieved through long-lasting insecticidal nets (LLINs) and indoor residual spraying (IRS), raising hopes for malaria elimination. However, emerging insecticide resistance threatens these gains. This study assessed the susceptibility of Anopheles gambiae s.l. populations to public health insecticides, examined the frequencies of kdr, Ace-1, and N1575Y mutations, and explored their associations with phenotypic resistance in Dielmo and Ndiop, Senegal. Methods: Anopheles larvae collected between September and December 2022 we

BACKGROUND: WHO has proposed elimination of transmission of onchocerciasis (river blindness) by 2030. More than 99% of cases of onchocerciasis are in sub-Saharan Africa. Vector control and mass drug administration of ivermectin have been the main interventions for many years, with varying success. We aimed to identify factors associated with elimination of onchocerciasis transmission in sub-Saharan Africa.
METHODS: For this systematic review and meta-analysis we searched for published articles reporting epidemiological or entomological assessments of onchocerciasis transmission status in sub-

Studying the behaviour and trophic preferences of mosquitoes is an important step in understanding the exposure of vertebrate hosts to vector-borne diseases. In the case of human malaria, transmission increases when mosquitoes feed more on humans than on other animals. Therefore, understanding the spatio-temporal dynamics of vectors and their feeding preferences is essential for improving vector control measures. In this study, we investigated the feeding behaviour of Anopheles mosquitoes at two sites in the Sudanian areas of Senegal where transmission is low following the implementation of ve

Malaria is a principal cause of illness and death in countries where the disease is endemic. Personal protection against mosquitoes using repellents could be a useful method that can reduce and/or prevent transmission of mosquito-borne diseases. The available repellent products, such as creams, roll-ons, and sprays for personal protection against mosquitoes, lack adequate long-term efficacy. In most cases, they need to be re-applied or replaced frequently. The encapsulation and release of the repellents from several matrices has risen as an alternative process for the development of invention

BACKGROUND: The complexity of mosquito-borne diseases poses a major challenge to global health efforts to mitigate their impact on people residing in sub-tropical and tropical regions, to travellers and deployed military personnel. To supplement drug- and vaccine-based disease control programmes, other strategies are urgently needed, including the direct control of disease vectors. Modern vector control research generally focuses on identifying novel active ingredients and/or innovative methods to reduce human-mosquito interactions. These efforts include the evaluation of spatial repellents, w

The mosquito Aedes aegypti transmits the virus that causes dengue, yellow fever, Zika and Chikungunya viruses, and in several regions of the planet represents a vector of great clinical importance. In terms of mortality and morbidity, infections caused by Ae. aegypti are among the most serious arthropod transmitted viral diseases. The present study investigated the larvicidal potential of seventeen cinnamic acid derivatives against fourth stage Ae. aegypti larvae. The larvicide assays were performed using larval mortality rates to determine lethal concentration (LC50). Compounds containing the

The emergence and spread of Lyme disease and other infections associated with black-legged ticks is causing a public health crisis. No human vaccines are currently available, and both diagnosis and treatment are sometimes ineffectual, leading to advocacy for self-directed preventative measures. These recommendations are widely communicated to the public, but there is limited evidence for their efficacy. We undertook a systematic review and mixed-effects meta-regression analysis of factors purported to increase or decrease risk of black-legged tick bites and tick-borne disease. Published articl

BACKGROUND: Malaria is an important cause of illness and death across endemic regions. Considerable success against malaria has been achieved within the past decade mainly through long-lasting insecticide-treated nets (LLINs). However, elimination of the disease is proving difficult as current control methods do not protect against mosquitoes biting outdoors and when people are active. Repellents may provide a personal protection solution during these times.
OBJECTIVES: To assess the impact of topical repellents, insecticide-treated clothing, and spatial repellents on malaria transmission.

BACKGROUND: Aedes aegypti, the principal vector for dengue, chikungunya and Zika viruses, is a synanthropic species that uses stagnant water to complete its reproductive cycle. In urban settings, rainfall water draining structures, such as storm drains, may retain water and serve as a larval development site for Aedes spp. reproduction. Herein, we describe the effect of a community-based intervention on preventing standing water accumulation in storm drains and their consequent infestation by adult and immature Ae. aegypti and other mosquitoes.
METHODS: Between April and May of 2016, local re
