[Reaction of upper respiratory tracts, cochlear and vestibular analyzers to the combined action of physical and chemical factors of the working environment].

The objective of this study was to evaluate the clinico-functional state of mucosa of upper respiratory tracts, acoustic and vestibular analyzers in 638 workers opertating different techniques of plasma metal processing and exposed to different combinations of high-frequency occupational noise and toxic dust-gas mixtures containing ozone, nitric oxides, and composite aerosols. The study revealed high frequency of inflammatory and dystrophic changes in upper respiratory mucosa, functional disturbances in the vestibular analyzer and neurosensory sound-perceiving apparatus. The character and degr

Clinical, electrophysiological, and serum biochemical measures of progressive neurological and hepatic dysfunction in feline Niemann-Pick type C disease.

Niemann-Pick type C (NP-C) disease is a neurovisceral lysosomal storage disease characterized by neurologic dysfunction, hepatosplenomegaly, and early death. Natural history studies are very difficult to perform due to the low incidence and high heterogeneity of disease in the human population. Sixteen cats with a spontaneously occurring missense mutation in NPC1 were evaluated over time to define the progression of neurologic and hepatic disease. Affected cats had remarkably regular onsets of specific signs of cerebellar and vestibular system dysfunction with progressive severity of dysfuncti

[Emergency diseases of the ear (comparative statistical data)].

Statistical data are detailed concerning compositional, therapeutic and diagnostic aspects of urgent diseases of the ear (inflammation and traumas of the external ear, acute and aggravated chronic otitis media, acute neurosensory hypoacusis, etc.). 580 patients were urgently hospitalized to ENT clinic (Moscow General Hospital N 1) at the Russian State Medical University in 1995 for urgent diseases of the external, middle and internal ear. This makes up 28% of a total of hospitalized ENT patients. The most effective policy of treatment for each ear disease form is analyzed.

Toxic and drug-induced disorders in otolaryngology.

Toxic and drug-induced disorders can be identified with alarming frequency. Otolaryngologists in the past were acutely aware of the ototoxic properties of certain medications but, with today's increasing armamentarium, new problems arise that may have an iatrogenic cause.

A novel mouse model of acute vestibular dysfunction via semicircular canal injection of absolute ethanol.

OBJECTIVE: Various vestibular pathology models have been developed to elucidate the underlying mechanisms of vestibular diseases; however, there is a notable absence of minimally invasive mouse model of vestibular dysfunction. In this study, we established a novel model and conducted a comprehensive evaluation of vestibular function alongside various behavioral assessments. METHODS: We developed a surgical procedure involving canalostomy followed by injection of absolute ethanol into the semicircular canal of mice. Histological analysis and auditory brainstem response (ABR) testing were condu

[Imaging of the cochleo-vestibular system].

This article will review the main pathologies affecting the vestibulocochlear system from the sensorineural organs to the cerebral cortex. MR imaging has greatly improved detection of these pathologies. Thin slice MR imaging using different pulse sequences now allows improved depiction of anatomical structures. Vestibular schwannoma is by far the most common lesion, but MR imaging allows detection and characterization of rarer lesions in patients often presenting with similar symptoms.

A Vestibular Challenge Combined with Calcitonin Gene-Related Peptide (CGRP) Promotes Anxiety-Like Behaviors.

Motion-induced anxiety and agoraphobia are more frequent symptoms in patients with vestibular migraine (VM) than migraine without vertigo. The neuropeptide calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP) is a therapeutic target for migraine and VM, but the link between motion hypersensitivity, anxiety, and CGRP is relatively unexplored, especially in preclinical mouse models. To further examine this link, we tested the effects of systemic CGRP and off-vertical axis rotation (OVAR) on elevated plus maze (EPM) and rotarod performance in male and female C57BL/6J mice. Rotarod ability was assessed using tw

The relationship between clinical characteristics and magnetic resonance imaging results of Ménière disease: a prospective study.

Ménière disease (MD) is an idiopathic inner ear disorder, and endolymphatic hydrops (EH) being considered to be its pathological basis. Currently, there is no gold standard for diagnosing MD. Previous study has reported visualized EH using MRI by intratympanic gadolinium-based contrast media (GBCM) administration (IT-Gd) in patients with MD, and this technique was gradually established for MD diagnosis. However, few studies reported their diagnostic sensitivity and specificity in clinical application. This prospective study aimed at investigating the clinical characteristics and magnetic reson

Gamma Knife Radiosurgery for Transmodiolar Schwannoma.

BACKGROUND: Rare and deep located tumors are surgical challenge with high morbidity. Minimal invasive techniques should be encouraged for a better outcome. Intralabyrinthine schwannoma (ILS) is a rare benign tumor that usually presents with hearing loss and tinnitus. Surgery is associated with high rate of facial paralysis and deafness. Radiosurgery is an option for tinnitus treatment, without the risk of facial paralysis. CASE DESCRIPTION: A young male patient presented with severe hearing loss and incapacitating tinnitus. Magnetic resonance revealed the presence of a small ILS. Radiosurgery

Thinning or dehiscence of bone in structures of the middle cranial fossa floor in superior semicircular canal dehiscence.

BACKGROUND: Superior semicircular canal dehiscence (SSCD) is a rare inner ear disorder; currently, it is unknown whether the etiopathology underlying this structural irregularity affects neighboring structures. The goal is to investigate the prevalence of bone thinning in areas of the middle cranial fossa (MCF) floor in SSCD and non-SSCD patients. METHODS: This retrospective study analyzed 100 patients from March 2011 to June 2017 at a tertiary referral center. 100 patients undergoing 118 SSCD repair surgeries (18 bilateral) were identified. 12 SSCD ears were excluded due to lack of pre-opera

Detection of intralabyrinthine abnormalities using post-contrast delayed 3D-FLAIR MRI sequences in patients with acute vestibular syndrome.

PURPOSE: 3D-FLAIR sequences with delayed acquisition after contrast medium injection have demonstrated new insights into blood-labyrinthine barrier (BLB) abnormalities in various diseases. The aim of this study was to assess the BLB in patients referred with unilateral acute vestibular syndrome (UAVS). MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this retrospective multicenter imaging study, we performed 3D-FLAIR and steady-state free precession (SSFP) sequences 4 h after contrast medium administration in 26 healthy volunteers and in 30 patients with UAVS. Two radiologists, blinded to the clinical data, indepen

Isolated Vestibular Suppression Impairment With Vestibular Migraine: A Phenotypic CANVAS Variant.

HYPOTHESIS: Cerebellar Ataxia with Neuropathy and Vestibular Areflexia (CANVAS) is likely to have a genetic basis. We describe the unique eye movement features of a possible phenotypic CANVAS variant. BACKGROUND: The patient comes from a large CANVAS kindred (four out of nine siblings) and has sensory neuropathy, cerebellar eye signs, and vestibular migraine (VM), but otherwise normal vestibular function. METHODS: We recorded eye and head movements using the gold standard scleral search coil technique: in the patient, a close relative with mild sensory neuropathy, and a normal control. RESU

Assessment of the otolith-ocular reflex using ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potentials in patients with episodic lateral tilt sensation.

The otolith-ocular reflex in patients with episodic lateral tilt sensation without any other vestibular symptoms was assessed using ocular vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (oVEMP). Ten patients (6 men and 4 women, mean age=53.5) were enrolled. All patients had episodic lateral tilt sensation. Patients with a medical history of rotatory vertigo, loss of consciousness, head trauma, or symptoms or signs of central nervous dysfunction or proprioceptive dysfunction and those who had been definitely diagnosed with a disease that causes disequilibrium were excluded. All of the 10 patients had oV

Auditory and vestibular hair cell stereocilia: relationship between functionality and inner ear disease.

The stereocilia of the inner ear are unique cellular structures which correlate anatomically with distinct cochlear functions, including mechanoelectrical transduction, cochlear amplification, adaptation, frequency selectivity and tuning. Their function is impaired by inner ear stressors, by various types of hereditary deafness, syndromic hearing loss and inner ear disease (e.g. Ménière's disease). The anatomical and physiological characteristics of stereocilia are discussed in relation to inner ear malfunctions.

Traumatic perilymphatic fistula secondary to stapes luxation into the vestibule: a case report.

A penetrating ear injury with a perilymphatic fistula is not an uncommon occurrence in otolaryngologic practice, but stapes luxation is rare. We report the case of an 11-year-old boy who developed a traumatic perilymphatic fistula secondary to an atypical stapes luxation into the vestibule. After sustaining a penetrating injury to the right ear, the patient presented with otalgia, vertigo, vomiting, gait unsteadiness, and hearing loss. High-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) of the temporal bone detected pneumolabyrinth, indicating a perilymphatic fistula. The stapes had pivoted on the foot
